18453  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Ingres Café Brews Up Interest With The Eclipse Open Source Development Community on: March 18, 2008, 10:14:56 PM
“Consolidated Application Foundation for Eclipse” Bundle Simplifies Installation and Deployment of Rich Java Applications

Slough, UK — 18th March 2008 — Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software, announced today the creation of Ingres CAFÉ™ (Consolidated Application Foundation for Eclipse), which brings together in one bundle all the components developers need to create and deploy rich Java applications built using the Eclipse Foundation’s open source development framework.

“Since we launched the Ingres DTP Plug-in for Eclipse last year, we have seen significant community interest in Ingres culminating in the community contribution of Ingres CAFÉ, which we are thrilled to announce this year at EclipseCON,” said Emma McGrattan, senior vice president of engineering at Ingres. “The Ingres CAFÉ bundle takes the guesswork out of determining which set of components are required to build and deploy rich Java applications with Eclipse and Ingres all with a single click install.”

Built over the last year, Ingres CAFÉ is an open source community contributed project spearheaded by Samrat Dhillon, a graduate student at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

“Anyone can download Ingres CAFÉ right now,” said Dhillon. “Before Ingres CAFÉ, you had to build it yourself and put it together. Not anymore. It’s one click and code.”

Ingres CAFÉ bundles the Eclipse IDE, Ingres DBMS, Apache Tomcat, Hibernate and JSF libraries into a single installable package complete with quick start documentation and integrated maintenance, as well as a demonstration program so developers can learn by example.  Ingres CAFÉ includes a version of the Eclipse Framework and will include the Ingres Eclipse DTP (Data Tools Platform) plug-in which was designed with developer productivity in mind, incorporating rich functionality of the tool while maintaining a consistent way of working.  The Ingres DTP also provides for support of querying of data, the ability to run SQL statements by simply highlighting the statement text, direct editing of table data and database procedure code, and the ability to execute and get results from row producing database procedures.  These assist developers to become productive immediately with Eclipse and Ingres.  Maintenance is integrated as well, providing easy access to the latest updates and patches.

Stop by the Ingres booth at EclipseCON to see a full demo of Ingres CAFÉ. Developers can also immediately download the Ingres CAFÉ stack from the following site:  http://bugs.ingres.com/wiki/CAFE

In addition, Emma McGrattan will be speaking on Wednesday, 19th March at 5pm, at EclipseCON, in a session entitled, “What are the Top Ten Reasons You Need a Playstation 3 at Work?” The session is for anyone who wonders “what if” when faced with popular electronics and developing technologies. Learn what inspired the Ingres Engineering team to spearhead open innovation at work (and at play) with Eclipse, running the DTP with Ingres support on the PS3 (running Fedora Linux). McGrattan is a newly elected add-in representative for the Eclipse Foundation board of directors for the upcoming term.

18454  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Top Tips For Fixed Asset Management on: March 18, 2008, 09:11:43 PM
Assetware offers free Guide in response to research findings

According to independent research, many organisations are using inefficient fixed asset management procedures and inadequate asset management software. In response to these findings, asset management specialist Assetware www.assetware-technology.com has produced a new Guide which contains tips and advice on improving fixed asset management processes and systems.  The Guide, entitled ‘The Least you Need to Know about Fixed Asset Management’ also includes practical information about an asset inventory to reduce expenditure and improve profitability. It is available from Assetware’s website http://www.assetware-technology.com/request-1.htm

A study by Gartner indicates that up to 30% of organisations are in a ‘chaotic’ state, meaning that they do not know what they own, where the assets are located or who is using them. According to research by KPMG, UK companies are wasting £17 billion a year because managers have not applied proper asset management concepts. Other research indicates that companies are overspending by up to 40% because of under-utilisation, inefficient maintenance and petty theft of their assets.

“These findings bear out our experience,” says Assetware’s General Manager Chloe Harlick. “In many companies we find that fixed asset management is just not seen as an important business issue. Yet we’ve seen amazing results in companies that improve their asset management systems and processes. One of our clients reported immediate savings of £17,000 a month on maintenance contracts as a result of our doing an asset management process review. There’s no doubt that effective fixed asset management can save companies a lot of money.”

Assetware’s new Guide is a succinct summary of key asset management issues. It includes a review of the vital issues in financial asset management, guidelines on carrying out an asset inventory, and an overview of IT asset management. For smaller businesses currently using spreadsheets for asset management, there is a summary of their advantages and pointers to their drawbacks.

Continues Harlick ‘Our “Least you Need to Know about Fixed Asset Management’ is a practical reference guide. It’s intended to alert people to the importance of asset management, and show them the real bottom-line benefits they can get from putting in place best practice fixed asset management. We’re offering the Guide free, and we anticipate that a lot of people will benefit from it.”

“Perhaps the next time there is a fixed asset management research survey,” concludes Harlick, “the results will be a lot better!”

Boris Johnson launches mayoral campaign on ‘Speakers Corner online’ Friction.tv.

To mark the start of the official campaign period for the London Mayoral elections, Boris Johnson has chosen Friction.tv (www.friction.tv) to host a series of individual video debates on his policies.

The site will be used by the Back Boris Campaign Team as a platform for Boris to outline his policies and Mayoral manifesto and most importantly to invite Londoners to have the right to reply through video.  Links to the video content will be distributed to the media, the campaign’s interest groups and the 7000 strong members of the Back Boris Campaign through www.backboris.com.

Continuing his emphasis on using the internet and video as part of his campaign, Boris was keen to mark the start of the election campaign period with a new online dialogue with the electorate. A Campaign Spokesperson said: “Boris is the only candidate offering truly fresh ideas and the internet is the perfect way to reach the many voters who are keen for change in London. We wanted to mark the start of the official campaign period with an innovative approach that reflects the way people access information.”

Working with Friction.tv adds an extra dimension to our campaign enabling interactive debate that engages people around the key issues facing Londoners.  Boris is not afraid to discuss these issues and Friction.tv is a perfect platform for this.”

Omer Shaikh, CEO of Friction.tv commented:  “Political debate is at the heartland of our site and we are delighted to work with the Back Boris campaign team as part of our coverage of the London Mayoral elections.”

Politically neutral and independently owned, debates on Friction.tv range from current affairs, environment, sport and gossip.

Foreshore Selects Arbor Networks for Network-wide Security and Traffic Engineering

Foreshore Also Using Peakflow SP to Reduce Costs and Optimise IP Services

Arbor Networks, a leading provider of secure service control solutions for global business networks, announced today that Foreshore, a leading provider of hosting, messaging, storage, DDoS protection and other Internet services to the offshore business world, has deployed the Arbor Peakflow SP platform (“Peakflow SP”) for network-wide anomaly detection and mitigation, enabling them to cut costs and optimise critical business services for their customers.

Since its inception in 2000, Foreshore’s non-stop network infrastructure is meeting the rigorous 24/7 operational requirements of international banks, major e-retailers and electronic payment providers. In an era of global network security threats that are ever-increasing in size and frequency, DDoS detection and mitigation are critical to Foreshore’s continued success – and that of its customers.

Peakflow SP is delivering the pervasive network visibility, deep application insight and comprehensive threat management Foreshore needs to surgically mitigate and report on DDoS and zero-day threats before they impact critical business services.  Foreshore is also using Peakflow SP for traffic engineering to improve network performance and to deliver revenue generating managed DDoS detection and mitigation services to customers.

“By providing intelligent visibility into our network traffic, Peakflow SP gives us three major benefits,” says Derek Fage, technical director at Foreshore. “First, the system instantly alerts us to anomalous network activity so we can address security threats and maintain the highest quality of service. Second, it provides detailed information about suspect and attack traffic so we can conduct meaningful forensics. And third, by providing insight into where traffic is coming from, it enables more accurate traffic engineering, network planning and peering analysis – all of which helps reduce our costs and optimise our services.”

“Peakflow SP is a platform that delivers a number of benefits beyond network security. Foreshore is leveraging the broad functionality of Peakflow SP to improve network-wide visibility, security, traffic engineering and to potentially deliver managed DDoS protection services to their customers.” said Rob Malan, Arbor Networks co-founder and chief technology officer.

For more detail on how Foreshore is leveraging Arbor Networks’ Peakflow SP platform, please visit Arbor Networks’ website to read the Solution Brief Case Study or download the podcast discussion with Derek Fage, technical director at Foreshore.

Arbor Networks Peakflow SP protects more than 70% of the world’s service provider networks from security threats such as DDoS attacks, botnets and worms as well as network issues such as traffic and routing instability.  Peakflow SP is delivering a unique combination of security, visibility and policy enforcement in a single box.

18458  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / BullGuard releases BullGuard Backup 8.0 on: March 18, 2008, 05:39:56 PM
New Features, more Backup and free Support

Copenhagen, 18th March 2008 – Today BullGuard releases BullGuard Backup 8.0, the second version of its stand-alone backup offering.  New features include improved encryption and compression options, a larger Online Backup Drive and a unique Support experience. BullGuard has been developing backup technologies since 2003.

With BullGuard Backup users can easily set up, schedule and configure their backups. An upgradable 10 GB Online Backup Drive is included in the subscription. Backups to local media are also supported as are email backups for Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Thunderbird email clients.

“My favourite new feature is the integration of our Online Drive with Windows Explorer,” says Theis Søndergaard, CTO and co-founder of BullGuard. “The Online Drive shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer allowing users to simply drag and drop files to and from the Online Drive. This makes the Online Drive much more accessible.”

Under the default scheduling setting, BullGuard Backup 8.0 will automatically launch backup profiles to run when the computer is idle, making sure backups are performed regularly and without interrupting the user. Other scheduling options are also available.

In BullGuard Backup 8.0 files are compressed before being transferred to the Online Drive, significantly speeding up the transfer process. Users also have the option of compressing their files during storage, allowing more files to be stored.  As in the previous version, files are encrypted during transfer, but users can now also choose to encrypt files during storage.

Remote access, the revolutionary new feature in BullGuard’s Support structure that was first introduced in BullGuard Internet Security 8.0, is also part of BullGuard Backup 8.0. “With remote access, users can grant our supporters temporary access to their computers. This will enable our Support team to handle questions even more efficiently”, says Søndergaard. Users can access BullGuard Support 24/7 via email or live chat.

BullGuard Backup 8.0 is available immediately from www.bullguard.com. A one-year subscription costs £25.

BroadSoft Launches BroadSoft Xtended to Personalize Voice Communications Technologies Through Web 2.0 Integrated Applications

Web-based marketplace offers new software to end-users, solutions integrators, resellers and developers

San Jose, Calif., March 18, 2008 – BroadSoft, Inc., the leading provider of VoIP application software, today announced BroadSoft Xtended, an initiative created to highlight the integration of voice and Web 2.0 technologies. The initiative drives new innovative applications into the hands of BroadWorks® VoIP application platform service providers and end-users by making them available online through the establishment of the BroadSoft Xtended Marketplace, the first of its kind for the telecommunications industry. Through the Xtended Marketplace, customers will be able to download and gain information about new technologies available for integration with BroadWorks.

The BroadWorks VoIP platform is used by hundreds of telecom service providers to deliver advanced voice features to business and residential customers. With BroadSoft Xtended,  the BroadWorks platform becomes infinitely more valuable to service providers and end-users by integrating voice into popular applications and Web services through application mash-ups.

The BroadSoft Xtended initiative has attracted the interest of leading technology companies including Salesforce.com and Simulscribe, as well as developers and partners who have created integrated solutions for popular business and consumer applications, including WebEx, Facebook, and ACT! by Sage. These new mashups with BroadWorks calling features are available on the Xtended Marketplace, a community where service providers and end-users alike can access applications, participate in discussion forums and share integration ideas with developers. The first iteration of the Xtended Marketplace features new applications, which are available for download.

“For too long, voice has been an underutilized application in the Web 2.0 evolution,” said Scott Wharton, vice president of Marketing for BroadSoft®. “Integrating our professional-grade calling features with leading applications and solutions illustrates the flexibility of our platform, and gives end-users the opportunity to improve how they communicate with friends or customers. The Xtended Marketplace is just the beginning of our plans to leverage Web 2.0 to improve communication worldwide.”

Major telecommunications companies including Sprint, Telefonica de Espana, Verizon and Cox Communications use BroadSoft’s carrier-grade VoIP technologies to deliver advanced voice and video calling services to enterprises and consumers. BroadSoft Xtended enables service providers to extend their voice services into social network and business applications used daily by customers.

“There has been genuine excitement shown by our customers when we introduce them to these new BroadSoft Xtended solutions, such as VoIP services integrated with customer relationship management (CRM),” said Dave Gilbert, CEO of SimpleSignal, a business VoIP provider based outside of Los Angeles, California. “Extending voice applications to customers’ daily business functions increases their productivity and efficiency.”

Developers can leverage the Xtended Marketplace to license their mashups to service providers or to the worldwide end-user base that receives BroadWorks-based voice services. Later this spring, the BroadSoft Xtended Marketplace will introduce an e-commerce engine to facilitate the purchasing of mashup apps.

Some of the solutions available on the BroadSoft Xtended Marketplace today are:

·Salesforce.com: Created by BroadSoft, the Unified Connector for Salesforce integrates BroadWorks calling features into this CRM application, allowing click-to-dial and other call management functionality. Salesforce.com is the leading on-demand CRM provider.
·Facebook Widget: The ClicktoMessage Facebook widget, created by JoeDeveloper.net, allows users to enable friends in their network to call them on their home, mobile or PC-based phone.
·WebEx integration: Litescape Technologies’ OnCast integrates WebEx collaboration services with Salesforce and BroadWorks through One-Touch Web Conferencing, allowing users to join or create WebEx meetings with one touch from phones or PCs.
·ACT! by Sage: C3IP Communications created this mashup for ACT! by Sage contact management software that enables call management capabilities within ACT!, including click-to-dial and automatic screen pops from CRM database records based on caller ID. ACT! has nearly 3 million registered users.
·SimulScribe: Integrated with BroadWorks, SimulScribe’s voicemail-to-text service allows users to read their voicemail messages via e-mail.
·Polycom: The Polycom Productivity Suite enables users to record calls, visually manage conference calls and access corporate directories all from Polycom’s SoundPoint IP desktop phones.

BT, France Telecom, Telecom Italia and Telekomunikacja Polska to give Europe a stronger voice in broadband standards development

12 March – At the annual meeting of the DSL Forum, four of Europe’s leading telecommunications network operators were elected to the DSL Forum Board of Directors.

The new members include Kevin Foster, of BT; Christophe Alter, from France Telecom; Mauro Tilocca of Telecom Italia; and Marcin Drzymala from Telekomunikacja Polska.  Frank Van der Putten of Alcatel-Lucent, Les Brown of Infineon and Phil Skeba of Intel also were re-elected to the board.  These strong industry players will help drive the standards work and direction of the Forum, whose activities now involve a much wider scope than its original DSL mandate – including increasing activity around IPTV, fibre deployments and management of the digital home.

Though BT has had a seat on the Forum’s board in the past, this is the first time the other companies have been elected.  This strong European presence is representative of the increasing broadband and IPTV leadership coming out of our European members.

In conjunction with the election of the new board members, analyst Point Topic announced the latest IPTV statistics, which revealed global IPTV subscribers topped 10 million in third quarter 2007 - a major milestone and a 27 per cent increase on the previous quarter.  Once again Europe is the leading region, having over 6.5 million IPTV subscribers, with France being the country with the most subscribers.  Although Western Europe has a strong lead in IPTV deployments, Eastern Europe is beginning to build its IPTV numbers and now has over 297,000 subscribers.

18465  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / First Child Trust Fund ad campaign from The Children's Mutual on: March 11, 2008, 09:52:07 PM
A new iconic TV advertisement from award-winning director Simon Ratigan is set to hit the screens of families across the Midlands from January 7.  The 'First Words' advert, the first non-governmental TV advertising around the Child Trust Fund (CTF), comes from long-term savings for children specialists The Children's Mutual (http:// www.thechildrensmutual.co.uk).

Featuring what is being billed as 'an incredibly tender moment between a loving father and his newborn son', with the father thinking about his hopes and fears for his son's future, the advert breaks the mould of traditional financial services advertising.

For The Children's Mutual, this television advertisement marks a significant stage in its 126-year history.  Although the company has been increasing its focus on long-term savings for children for more than 50 years, it rebranded from Tunbridge Wells Equitable Friendly Society to The Children's Mutual in 2003 on becoming the UK's only company specialising solely in the market.  Since then, the company has grown its brand through direct marketing, web and online promotion, retail partnerships and public relations activity.  It is the leading commentator on the Child Trust Fund and saving for children.  The Children's Mutual appointed creative agency, Mustoes, in 2007 to develop above-the-line activity.

'First Words' will appear on ITV1 and Channel 4 in the Midlands for six weeks and also features The Children's Mutual strap line 'Home of the Child Trust Fund’.  With every child under five eligible for a Child Trust Fund long-term savings account, the advertising has been created to reach parents with eligible children, as well as those who are thinking about having a family in the near future.

Appointed in June 2007 to help develop The Children's Mutual as a consumer brand, Tony Anderson, Marketing Director, said: "The Children's Mutual is at a very exciting stage in its development. The Child Trust Fund is the UK's first universal savings product and with more than three million[1] accounts open, it is now considered part of mainstream financial services.  As a leading provider of Child Trust Funds, it is essential that we help families understand the importance of saving and investing for their child over the long term.

"We appointed Mustoes as our creative agency to help us build emotional appeal and familiarity with The Children's Mutual's brand among families.  This advertising marks our first above-the-line activity to reach the parents, grandparents, friends and family of the Child Trust Fund generation."

The Children's Mutual has twice won the only Child Trust Fund accolade, the Investment, Life & Pensions Moneyfacts "Best CTF Provider" award, and is also recognised by the Superbrands Council as a Kids Superbrand, an award for companies that demonstrate a high level of awareness and communication with their customers.

'First Words' can also be viewed online at http://www.thechildrensmutual.co.uk from 7 January 2008.

Market leading SIEM solution chosen to ensure security from internal and external threats, compliance, and vastly improved business efficiency

LONDON, UK — 11th March, 2008 — ArcSight, Inc., a leader in Enterprise Security and Compliance Management solutions, today announced that T-Mobile has implemented its market leading Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, ArcSight ESM.

ArcSight ESM provides T-Mobile with the ability to control, monitor, respond and adapt to threats in real-time.  The automated monitoring and response capabilities has released T-Mobile’s technicians from hours of low-level, manual analysis, allowing them to concentrate on improving IT security.  It also enables T-Mobile to adhere to regulatory compliance, particularly Sarbannes Oxley.

“The broad oversight that ArcSight provides, along with the automated correlation capability, is generating distinct advantages. We now have within our ‘operations security cockpit’ a comprehensive security platform that enables us to discover risks, correlate relevant information, assess vulnerabilities and communicate compliance to stakeholders and customers,” said T-Mobile Operation Security Management. “This automation obviously brings massive business benefits just from a time savings alone, making us so much more efficient. We also now have an early warning system for detecting suspicious activity that could be an insider threat.”

ArcSight ESM helps protect against the range of threats that businesses face today – helping ensure compliance and combat security threats, fraud, physical breaches, malicious insiders and more.  ArcSight ESM collects and intelligently parses data from the vast array of event sources – and delivers a single view into that information that can be used by corporate stakeholders across an organisation.
