18398  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Ingres Open Source Makes Waves With Les Salins du Midi on: April 01, 2008, 08:14:57 PM
Les Salins du Midi Counts on the Reliability and Robustness of Ingres to Help Guarantee the Production Quality of Sea Salt

Ingres Corporation, a leading provider of open source database management software and support services, is helping to put a bit more flavour into French food.  Les Salins du Midi, the biggest producer of salt in Europe, relies on an Ingres open source database to develop a computerised sea salt production solution to better monitor the amount and quality of salt it produces and markets worldwide.

Not content to produce close to 2.5 million tons of various salts, which they market worldwide, Les Salins du Midi is also a leader in environmental consciousness. Searching for ways to maximise its logistical and operational efficiency without infringing on important wildlife habitats, Les Salins du Midi decided that Ingres would be the perfect salt in their software stack. The company selected Ingres to manage its salt production and has built a leading computerised production management system based on the Ingres open source solution.

“The Ingres open source model is a vehicle for innovation and value creation for our customers,” said Eric Soares, country manager for France at Ingres. “Les Salins du Midi provides a perfect example of how a company can benefit from our solutions and services. We are very happy to work with them as their systems evolve, and to contribute to the quality of their product – much to our culinary delight.”

Les Salins du Midi, known for both its historical site and its outstanding efforts at nature preservation, made headlines in France for the novelty of its comprehensive solution that monitors all operations, such as preparation of salt ponds, daily tracking of water movements and production supervision. The system is also essential for optimising personnel management, anticipating the quantities of salt produced, and ensuring top quality.

“While an open source solution was not a specific requirement for us, we are delighted with this new configuration, which we feel is a guarantee for the longevity of the application,” said Jean-Luc Coulet, infrastructure and support manager at Les Salins du Midi. “The switch to open source distribution has slightly changed our way of doing things. We no longer have a contract with automatic renewal, but an annual order for support, at the same price or for slightly less.”

The reliability of Ingres, ease-of-use, and the quality of support are all elements that make Les Salins du Midi determined to be long-term subscribers of Ingres.

“It was extremely easy to switch to the open source version of Ingres and took less than one hour to complete the migration,” said Coulet. “We appreciated the flexibility of the solution, which makes it simple to move from one version to the next.”

18399  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Anam Rolls-out SMS Money Transfer to North American Wireless Carriers on: April 01, 2008, 08:02:29 PM
CTIA Booth 627, Central Hall C1/C2

CTIA Las Vegas NV, April 1 2008 l Anam Mobile today unveiled a service that will allow global money transfers via SMS as a new value-added service for North American wireless carriers.

SMS Money Transfer allows consumers to send money to people in their contact list using a simple three-step procedure. Firstly the user writes an SMS that begins “#cash” followed by the amount they wish to send and selects the person they want to send it to from their address book. Then the system confirms the transaction and asks for the sender’s PIN.  When the PIN is entered correctly the money is instantly debited from the sender’s bank account as a virtual ATM transaction and simultaneously credited to the bank account of the recipient.

SMS Money Transfer is appropriate to a wide variety of user cases.  For example the service could be used by parents to send emergency funds to their children at college.  Similarly it could be used by migrant workers to send money back to relatives in their home countries. The service could even be set up to pay bills or invoices for work transactions.

Gerry McKenna, CEO of Anam said, “Following the interest that we have had for the service in Europe, we believed it was time to launch the service to North American carriers.  The key to this service is that it delivers a lot of value to consumers but does not require them to alter their behaviour; it just means that people can now do more with SMS.  With the right support from the carrier, SMS Money Transfer could become a significant new service for them.”

In contrast to other novel data services which promise to create new revenue streams, SMS Money Transfer only requires the end-user to be familiar with SMS, which reduces barriers to entry and increases the likelihood of the service being used.  Anam’s dedication to value-added SMS services allows wireless carriers to propose new services without altering their customers’ cellular behavior, creating immediate results with additional revenues.

ChangingWorlds Announces US Launch of AdPersonalizer for Targeted Mobile Advertising

CTIA, LAS VEGAS, NV – April 1st, 2008 – ChangingWorlds, the global expert in Personalization for mobile data and Subscriber Intelligence today introduced its unique personalization solution for Mobile Advertising to US carriers at CTIA in Las Vegas.  With the launch of ClixSmart Ad Personalizer, ChangingWorlds’ brings its unique personalization technology and subscriber intelligence creation capabilities to mobile advertising.

At their exhibition booth in CTIA, ChangingWorlds will demonstrate how ClixSmart AdPersonalizer intelligently delivers personalized advertisements to users in a relevant, targeted, contextual and timely manner that is device- and network-agnostic.

ClixSmart Ad Personalizer uses the unique personalization features of the ClixSmart Relevance Engine to identify, select, and deliver the most relevant advertising content to the right subscriber at the right time. The ClixSmart Relevance Engine combines two unique technologies that have been developed by ChangingWorlds to deliver highly targeted mobile advertising that reflects behavioural and contextual factors as well as the inherent content preferences of each individual subscriber. This ensures that mobile advertising revenue is maximized by optimizing inventory throughput and click-through rates.

Using a technology called User-Community Preferences (UCPs), the ClixSmart Relevance Engine can develop an enhanced view of subscriber preferences & behaviour that combines the interests of the individual subscriber (user) with the preferences of like-minded subscribers (communities).  Also the ClixSmart Relevance Engine creates an Ad Signature for each individual ad which defines the important characteristics of an ad that makes it relevant for particular users.

Speaking today Professor Barry Smyth, Co-Founder & Chief Scientist of ChangingWorlds said, “Advertising is another form of content that must be highly personalized over mobile and not just using basic demographic or superficial profiling. Simply delivering an advert based on age, sex, handset type and location is not good enough and will be intrusive and off-putting for mobile internet users,” he continued “ChangingWorlds is unrivalled in its ability to implicitly create individual behavioural and community subscriber intelligence by analyzing on deck and off deck usage and such subscriber intelligence is essential to the success of mobile advertising.”
ChangingWorlds’ personalization & subscriber intelligence technology has won numerous prestigious innovation awards from leading technology groups such as the American Association of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and most recently ChangingWorlds was granted a ‘Deployed Application Award’ by the AAAI for its Personalized Intelligent Content Discovery for the Mobile Internet.

Also speaking today, ChangingWorlds CEO David Moran said “Since the inception of ChangingWorlds, we have championed and pioneered the need for intelligently personalized delivery of content to ensure the success of the Mobile Internet. Having delivered our personalization technology in more than 50 mobile operators worldwide, it is now widely accepted that personalization is absolutely essential for mobile data delivery and this has never been more important than for mobile advertising. The ClixSmart Ad Personalizer solution combines the three essential ingredients of successful mobile advertising – ad inventory, subscriber intelligence, personal relevance – to offer mobile subscribers an enriched and personalized mobile advertising experience.”

Solution Lets Operators Strategically Plan Their Network Evolution

Mentum® announced today it will be demonstrating its new Long Term Evolution (LTE) planning capabilities for Mentum Planet® at its booth during CTIA Wireless 2008 in Las Vegas. The new capabilities for the 3GPP 4G LTE standard build on Mentum’s existing market-leading RF planning and optimization software, allowing the company to support its customers’ network migrations from 2G to 4G regardless of technology path.

“Planet’s support for WiMAX — before the standards were finalized for this technology — gave us a market leading position in OFDM/OFDMA technologies,” said Bernard Breton, head of sales and marketing, Mentum. “We’re converting that head start into a market advantage for Mentum Planet in LTE and expect a positive reaction to our new capabilities.”

While the first commercial LTE deployments are expected to happen next year or later, network operators — and the equipment vendors and system integrators they employ — need RF planning solutions to evaluate their 4G technology options. Mentum Planet, with its strong GIS foundation, propagation accuracy and support for WiMAX and LTE, will enable strategic planning efforts based on technology comparisons, CAPEX planning and nominal designs.

18403  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / New Wapple Canvas Zest removes the barriers to mobile for everyone on: April 01, 2008, 07:25:10 PM
New, bundled packs of functionality make it quick and simple to tailor Mobile Internet sites to every market sector

1 April 2008: Today at CTIA, Wapple is launching a totally new version of its web-based site builder tool that breaks down the barriers to creating and publishing highly functional, professional and creative mobile internet sites. This latest version of the award–winning platform, Wapple Canvas™ Zest makes it easier than ever to get a mobile site up and running. And with the addition of the new market and application specific expansion packs, companies can quickly and easily add all of the functionality they need to make their sites a success. The new Wapple Expansion Packs range from Content Stores and News sites to classified ads and mobile advertising.

“Mobile Internet usage is reaching a real tipping point but many businesses are still in the dark, feeling technically or financially alienated from it. Others don’t understand the potential benefits or think it is unimportant, expecting newer phones to simply visit their PC website,” says Anne Thomas, co-founder and Business Development Director at Wapple. “Wapple’s service removes all barriers to entry. Sites built using Wapple Canvas™ are mobile friendly by default with exciting features that allow the business to interact with customers and partners whilst they are away from a web-connected PC.  No technical knowledge is needed to design highly creative and individual looking sites using Canvas and with the new expansion packs users also get tailor-made features and functionality designed for different market sectors.”

Wapple is opening up the Mobile Internet to every business worldwide. Small businesses can take advantage of the Business Starter Expansion pack, which is automatically included in every Wapple Canvas licence. This provides the key functionality required to get a simple but professional-looking site up and running within moments.  Users then have a range of Expansion Packs to choose from that are designed to provide the specific features and controls for different vertical markets and applications.  Wapple also offer full and unique solutions for mobile publishers, mobile marketing and mobile commerce.

Mobile websites created with Wapple Canvas™ can be accessed from virtually any device on any network and from any country. This is down to Wapple’s advanced Device Profiler system, which is able to reconfigure mobile sites built on its platform to fit perfectly on every single mobile device and browser without compromising the user experience.  Without the Wapple Device Profiler, it would be impossible to deliver optimised mobile internet sites to over 5,000 different handsets. Wapple also makes sure new devices are supported as they are launched.

Wapple Canvas™, the first and most comprehensive mobile publishing platform includes full CMS and hosting and is integrated with a number of mobile billing solutions, including PayForIt, MIGPay, MXTelecom, 2Ergo and the Bango platform.

Wapple Canvas Business Starter Pack costs from only £15 per month or can be totally ad-funded with the inclusion of relevant, targeted third-party banner ads that Wapple delivers through mobile advertising companies like AdMob, Google and Millennial Media.

Wapple will be demonstrating this new version of Canvas at CTIA’s M-tertainment Pavilion and is also unveiling its new corporate logo and a brand new website – www.wapple.net
18404  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Qualys Supports New Self Assessment Questionnaire for PCI Compliance on: April 01, 2008, 07:18:02 PM
QualysGuard PCI Compliance Solution Provides Full Support for All Types of New Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) Version 1.1 for Both Merchants and Service Providers

Qualys, Inc. today announced an upgrade to its QualysGuard® PCI on demand compliance solution with the new Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) Version 1.1, issued by the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standards Council (PCI SSC) in February 2008. The QualysGuard PCI implementation of the new SAQ allows customers to complete all versions of the questionnaire online and e-file it securely with their acquiring banks.

The SAQ is a validation tool used primarily by Level 2, 3 and 4 merchants (and some smaller service providers), as defined by the major credit-card brands—Visa Inc., MasterCard Worldwide, Discover Financial Services, American Express and JCB International — to validate compliance with the PCI Data Security Standards (PCI DSS). The PCI SSC updated SAQ version 1.0 to better align with PCI DSS version 1.1 and created four variants to ensure merchants only answer questions relevant to their environment. Each of the four variants, labeled A, B, C and D have qualifying questions used to determine which of the four questionnaires a merchant is required to complete.

“Issuing the latest self assessment questionnaire is another step the PCI Security Standards Council is taking to ensure that all merchants and service providers have options in determining their compliance strategy,” said Bob Russo, general manager, PCI Security Standards Council. “Having multiple SAQs available will streamline the process and make it easier for stakeholders to determine their compliance gaps and take action to ensure full compliance with the Standard.”

The SAQ, version 1.1 is now available at https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/tech/saq.htm and consists of four unique forms to meet various business scenarios. Each merchant completing the SAQ version 1.1 selects the questionnaire that best represents their environment, based on the descriptions below:

SAQ Validation   Description      SAQ   Number of Questions
Type
1      Card-not-present    A   11
      (e-commerce or mail/
      telephone-order)
      merchants, all
      cardholder data
      functions outsourced.
      This would never apply
      to face-to-face merchants.

2      Imprint-only or    B   21
      stand-alone terminal
      merchants with no
      electronic cardholder
      data storage.

3      Merchants with POS    C   38
      systems connected to
      the Internet, no
      electronic cardholder
      data storage.

4      All other merchants    D   226
      (not included in Types
      1-3 above) and all
      service providers defined
      by a payment brand as
      eligible to complete an SAQ.

QualysGuard fully supports all four types of questionnaires, labeled A-D, including the ability to enter online comments for compensating controls, provide remediation action plan for non-compliant sections, complete attestation of the assessment and electronically sign the SAQ online. More details on the QualysGuard PCI implantation or SAQ 1.1 are available at: http://www.qualys.com/docs/QG_PCI_GSG.pdf within the PCI Questionnaires chapter.

In this upgrade, QualysGuard PCI now supports both the previous SAQ version 1.0, as well as the four forms of the new SAQ version 1.1, allowing merchants to choose which version they wish to complete.  According to the PCI SSC, after April 30, 2008, the older SAQ version 1.0 will no longer be accepted for compliance validation.  From that date forward, all merchants will be required to use the new SAQ version 1.1.

18405  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Endace Delivers Open Programming Interface For NinjaProbe Appliance on: March 31, 2008, 10:15:39 PM
ENABLES THIRD PARTY DEVELOPERS TO READILY ACCESS CAPTURE AND REPLAY CAPABILITIES OF HIGH SPEED MONITORING PORTFOLIO

Auckland, NZ, and Washington DC, March 31st, 2008 - Endace Limited (“Endace”; LSE/AIM: EDA), a world leader in high speed network monitoring today announced the availability of a new application programming interface (API) that simplifies the handling of large captured-data files and real-time data flows .  Endace’s data forwarding API (DFA) is now available for current and prospective application partners to access the full packet capture, filter and duplication capabilities of the NinjaProbe appliance portfolio.

Capturing data at high rates presents a problem for traffic analysis software that downloads and opens very large files in order to access the subject data.  Endace’s DFA improves performance monitoring by allowing these applications to request target traffic from the NinjaProbe on an “as-needed” basis.  “Endace has a strong history in providing open APIs for packet capture,” explained Stephen Gleave, VP Marketing at Endace.  “Our Data Acquisition and Generation, or DAG, cards have always provided a common API for packet capture, regardless of network interface type.  By extending this approach to our portfolio of managed appliances, we are providing a unique opportunity for partners to leverage the power of a single platform to simultaneously drive multiple monitoring applications, easily and effectively.”

The ability for a single probe to filter, store or forward relevant data to multiple back-office applications is of broad interest to customers and developers alike.  “As a developer of sophisticated applications for intelligence analysts, Fox Replay relies on ready access to stored or real-time data for complete reconstruction of intercepted traffic flows,” said Bert Hubert, CTO and co-founder of Fox Replay.  “NinjaProbe’s data forwarding API allows companies like Fox to translate the power of high speed, one hundred percent packet capture into usable information for government agencies and law enforcement, without the need to sift through terabytes of stored but potentially irrelevant data.”

For more information, please visit http://www.endace.com/our-products/ninja-appliances/forwarding-interface or Endace booth #2800 at FOSE 2008, 1-3 April, Walter E. Washington Convention Center (Washington DC)

Sales up by 54% to in excess of £100 million in 2007

Calyx continue growth trajectory through acquisitions in UK and Ireland

31st March 2008 – Calyx, is taking the first step in a major expansion programme geared at positioning it as the number one independent, single source provider of end-to-end Information & Communications Technology (ICT) in the UK and Ireland. Today it has announced that it will be bringing its nine individual divisions under the one Calyx brand.

Since 2002, Calyx has invested in the development of its service offering through the acquisitions of Matrix Communications, Mentec International, Network Partners, ITS Technology Services and ServiceTec. This investment has been in response to market demand for managed services with a greater premium on integrated service delivery.

Calyx was established in 2002 following an MBO led by Maurice Healy, from parent company Alphyra. Calyx was then floated on AIM and the Irish Stock Exchange and then in 2007, Healy initiated another MBO, taking Calyx back into private ownership. Calyx has the support of its major shareholder, Alchemy Partners, to continue its growth strategy, both organic and acquisitive.

Maurice Healy, chief executive of Calyx, said: “The rebranding marks ‘the end of the beginning’ for Calyx and the start of an exciting new phase of development and expansion over the next five years.

“The new Calyx will provide a platform for further growth across the group and will make it better placed to integrate new acquisitions. This is the first step in a major expansion programme geared to position Calyx as the number one ICT player in the UK & Ireland.”

Calyx’s first financial update since going private in July last year, reported a turnover in excess of £100 million, up by 54% on the previous year. Turnover has more than trebled over the last two years.

Calyx’s customers now have access to all the ICT technology and expertise they need from one, single supplier. Calyx can boast a portfolio of clients including AIB, Citi, O2, London Fire Brigade, hospitals and government departments.

London, UK and Mountain View, Calif. – 31 March, 2008.  Teneros, (www.teneros.com) a market leader in application continuity appliances, today announced that it has signed a distribution agreement for its products in the UK and EU markets with ETC and Interchange the two distribution brands of Specialist Computer Holdings , Europe’s leading independent IT company.  As one of the UK’s largest distributors this announcement means that UK businesses operating Microsoft Exchange will be able to benefit from Teneros’ appliances that provide local high availability and remote disaster recovery for 24/7 email continuity.   Having recently acquired VC funding of USD40m to drive global business expansion, Teneros already has several high profile customers in the UK including the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Speaking about the announcement Steve Lewis, co-Founder and CEO of Teneros, said; "We are extremely pleased to have ETC & Interchange  as our strategic distribution partners for the United Kingdom and European Union.  They have established a reputation for offering best-of-breed technology which has allowed them to develop the strongest network of resellers in these regions. Email is mission-critical to businesses worldwide, and these businesses must have a simple, cost-effective, solution for assuring 24X7 email continuity. To that end, we look forward to delivering our Application Continuity Appliances™ for Microsoft Exchange with ETC into the UK and Europe."

Email system downtime creates major headaches for many companies, directly impacting business operations, revenue generation, customer service, and employee productivity. An estimated two-thirds of all companies use Microsoft Exchange for their e-mail, and even a few hours of downtime a year can cost businesses dearly both in terms of revenue and employee productivity costs.  In addition, existing solutions for ensuring Microsoft Exchange uptime involve IT staff conducting a multi-vendor science project to install and setup and then performing time-consuming regular maintenance. Teneros offers a comprehensive, single-vendor solution, deployed as a remotely managed appliance that makes it easy for companies to assure 24x7 Exchange continuity.

Speaking about the announcement and the benefits that Teneros will bring to its product portfolio, Andy Arthur, General Manager and Director of ETC & Interchange , said; “ We are pleased to be partnering with another best-of-breed vendor – this time for the business critical challenge of email continuity.  Teneros’ appliances fit well into our product offering and suit the markets we serve “Our specialist sales teams have the knowledge and experience required for such technologically advanced products.  We are a highly skilled organisation with over 18 years experience in providing the best possible solutions at the best possible price.

“We have a reputation for spotting the rising stars and bringing them into our portfolio,” he continued. “Our sales teams understand the market and are educated in the products they sell so the addition of Teneros to our range of solutions means we can provide a fuller portfolio to our reseller base.”

Arthur concluded, “We know how to sell the right product to the right customer. ETC and Interchange don’t simply sell leading brands, but provide sophisticated, intelligent and bespoke IT solutions. As part of this commitment, this is a great occasion for a limited number of partners to take on board this Teneros product and capitalize on the opportunity.”

The Teneros Application Continuity Appliances for Microsoft Exchange maintain an ongoing object-level backup of the Exchange mail store. The data is filtered for corruption during the replication process, guaranteeing you a corruption free, high integrity copy of your email data on the Teneros appliance. When an Exchange server problem or failure is detected by the Teneros appliance, the Teneros appliance performs an Instant-On™ failover and begins serving end-users with no disruption in email service or functionality for end-users. Each Teneros appliance protects a single Exchange server and can be deployed equally effectively at headquarters, branch offices, or a disaster recovery site.  The Teneros appliances require no intrusive software installations or configuration changes on the Exchange server.
