86  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / SETsquared companies pitch for royal seal of approval on: October 22, 2014, 03:00:12 PM
UK, 22nd October 2014 – Three SETsquared companies are in with a chance of pitching to HRH Duke of York in a start-up event with a royal twist.

Nu Desine (Bristol), Fourth State Medicine (Surrey) and Smart Antenna Technologies (Bath) have been shortlisted to take part in Pitch@Palace, a project spearheaded by the Duke of York that will culminate in 14 of the UK’s brightest science and technology start ups pitching for investment live in front of hundreds of the biggest names in business at St James’ Palace on November 5.

All three were selected to take part in the first phase of Pitch@Palace, which saw them get investor readiness training, one-to-one business support and pitching advice. They then went through a judging process at a ‘bootcamp’ at Microsoft’s offices yesterday (October 20), after which one lucky company will be selected to pitch their business ideas at the Palace to a room of international investment firms, celebrities and high net worth individuals. The other two members will win an exhibition slot at the event and get the chance to network with guests.

The bootcamp saw a total of 42 businesses pitching their ideas to the panel, and were assessed on three criteria: best pitch, commercial impact and most disruptive idea.

Bristol-based Nu Desine has created a revolutionary new electronic music instrument called The AlphaSphere. The company has already created (sound)waves across the globe, winning the UKTI’s Exporting for Growth competition and clinching Stuff Magazine’s “Design of the Year” award. Founder Adam Place said: “We’ve been so happy with the reception the AlphaSphere has received already in such a short amount of time, and this a fantastic opportunity for us. We’re hoping to win the spot to pitch at the Palace and if we do we may even try to rope a few royals into trying it out themselves!”

The second SETsquared company in with a chance of pitching at the event is Fourth State Medicine. The Surrey-based firm has developed a new plasma system for cosmetic and aesthetic surgery and wound care. The technology includes a hand-held plasma pen that deals with wrinkle removal, fine lines, wound care and skin resurfacing. Dr Thomas Frame, director, said: “There are opportunities for our technology to be used across a range of medical treatments, and it offers regional treatments that other systems can’t provide. Just being a part of Pitch@Palace will help us to establish even more business contacts and potentially grow our business even further.”

Completing the SETsquared hat trick is Smart Antenna Technologies, which is based in Bath and specialises in licensing ultra low cost antennas for the cellular sector. Co-founder and chief technology officer Dr Sampson Hu said: “Earlier this year we were delighted to secure further investment from Mercia Fund Management. We hope to secure a place to Pitch and the Palace and recreate our winning pitch in front of such an esteemed audience.”

Simon Bond, Innovation Director at SETsquared, which is partnering the event, said: “We are incredibly proud of all the start-ups we work with, all of which have some fantastic ideas and technologies that have the potential to turn into highly-profitable businesses. However these three really shone and we believe they are in for a great chance at attracting investment and useful contacts.”

HRH The Duke of York added: “I truly believe that the UK has the best scientists and engineers in the world – they create valuable intellectual property that can be exploited by entrepreneurial endeavour. There must be a common acknowledgement that entrepreneurs will drive growth and be the wealth creators of the future.
“Pitch@Palace is not just about investment. It’s about knowledge and the transfer of ideas; it’s about networking, mentoring and advice. I cannot say how proud I am of the work everyone has done, and the collaboration it has engendered.”

87  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Small cell microwave backhaul pioneer CCS expands deployment with China Mobile on: October 21, 2014, 03:33:27 PM
Cambridge, UK, 21st October 2014 - CCS (Cambridge Communication Systems Limited), creator of the world’s first self-organising small cell microwave backhaul system for mobile networks, today announces that China Mobile has expanded its deployment of CCS’ technology with a new installation in its Fujian Mobile branch.

In February this year, China Mobile – the world’s largest mobile operator – began implementing CCS’ backhaul system to deliver enhanced coverage and capacity in a busy urban environment of Beijing, in one of its first outdoor deployments of 4G LTE-TDD small cells. Now the operator is rolling out the CCS solution in the busiest commercial area of Longyan, to backhaul the latest LTE-TDD small cells from ZTE.

A CCS unit is installed at an existing macrocell site, which feeds down to the street to provide a high availability, low latency and high capacity Ethernet backhaul service in excess of 200Mbps to each small cell site.

The environment is extremely challenging for both RF and GPS – narrow streets with densely packed, tall, reflective buildings on both sides and a poor view of the sky. The CCS system’s self-organising capability enables it to pick up the optimal signal, thereby overcoming RF issues. Each CCS node is also uniquely capable of providing GPS-derived synchronisation to the small cell when the small cell’s own GPS fails. The GPS capabilities of CCS’ backhaul system are much more robust than those of a small cell, enabling operation in difficult environments where small cells may not function.

The Fujian network was deployed by local contractors in just one day after minimal training, without the need for any on-site configuration or manual alignment. The advanced self-organising nature of the CCS backhaul nodes has created a network that can self-configure into an optimal topology – without any RF or link planning – and provide automatic redundancy via self-healing features.

Commenting on today’s announcement, CCS CEO Steve Greaves said: “This expansion of our commercial partnership with China Mobile really underlines how successful our solution is proving to be in delivering robust backhaul in difficult urban settings.” He added: “The unique, built-in intelligence of our system means that these networks can be deployed quickly, flexibly and reliably in even the most challenging RF and GPS environments.”

88  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Rogue B2B End-user Buyers Bypass the Procurement Roadblock, According to New Com on: October 20, 2014, 03:57:50 PM
Jena, Germany, 20th October 2014 – Intershop, the leading independent provider of omni-channel commerce, introduces a new class of savvy buyers that is bypassing what they believe to be a corporate procurement roadblock – and so creating a sophisticated market that B2B sellers must address. International research by Forrester Consulting(1), commissioned by Intershop, found that 52% of these ‘rogue’ buyers find it more convenient to buy directly the goods and services they want, while a third (33%) believe they have a better understanding of their needs than their procurement colleagues.

Purchasing in upper mid-market and enterprise organizations around the globe is evolving to where business buying is not the sole domain of corporate procurement; and in some cases the purchasing ‘rulebook’ is being ignored completely. However, while sellers should continue to foster an ongoing and deep relationship with procurement customers, they must also address the high expectations of the business end-user buyer who is accustomed to buying conveniently online.
Sellers that want to address this expanding market will have to cater to a sophisticated buyer, found in all the countries researched(1) at all organizational levels and across industries. The end-user business buyer demands deep technical information about the products, multiple payment options, rich media content, and the types of services that only the most innovative and up-to-date online suppliers are delivering.

Among the key recommendations Forrester outlines in the study, The Rise of the Empowered B2B End User Buyer: Understanding and Addressing a New and Emerging Opportunity, “…end user buyers are conducting research and even finalizing their purchases on popular consumer websites. B2B sellers must market to and directly own the relationship with end user buyers by ensuring they provide the right content to deliver convenience and an experience that will engage and drive loyalty among end user buyers. “

The study also highlights that getting the commerce proposition right for B2B buyers in individual markets is critical and expectations vary widely. While a staggering 90% of Chinese respondents confirm they consult customer ratings and reviews before making a purchase, social media was much less important for buyers in the UK (11%) and Australia (12%). Online pricing information, however, was a far more important consideration for Australian (85%) and American (81%) buyers than Chinese (50%) and French (52%) buyers.

“The next new class of online customer has emerged on a global scale, said Jochen Moll, CEO at Intershop. “The Forrester research conducted on our behalf will help sellers crack the code on who these buyers are and how they purchase. We are pleased to be the first to help merchants understand these specific customer needs and to continue our heritage of providing a solution that caters to all buyers.”

(1)The Rise of the Empowered B2B End User Buyer: Understanding and Addressing a New and Emerging Opportunity, Forrester Consulting. www.intershop.com/forrester-b2b
Forrester conducted an online survey of 1,580 end-users with experience of buying B2B products and services online in Australia, China, France, Germany, the UK and the US. Survey participants were manager level and above from organizations with more than 500 employees across all industries. Questions that participants were asked focused on their relationship with corporate procurement, how they researched and finalized their work-related purchases, and their expectations of B2B supplier. The study took place between July – August 2014.

93  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Cortus Launches Optimized Low-Power Processor for Multi-Core Implementations in on: October 07, 2014, 04:46:13 PM
Montpellier, France, 7th October 2014 –  Cortus, a technology leader in low power, silicon efficient, 32-bit processor IP, today announced the release of the APS25 processor IP core, the second in a family of products based on the new Cortus v2 instruction set (see news release on APS23). The APS25 core is aimed at embedded systems demanding greater computational performance and system complexity while also requiring maximum code density and extendibility.

"The Internet of Things is ushering in a huge transition for embedded processors where power, security and code size are critical," said Loyd Case, Senior Analyst of The Linley Group. “We see a whole new set of requirements emerging for processor IP, especially when it comes to managing power and silicon area. The new Cortus cores and architecture do a good job of balancing between the complexity of the processor core and the size of the instruction memory, making them well suited for a broad range of industrial and consumer applications.”

Cortus licenses a range of low power 32-bit processor cores for intelligent connected devices. With growing embedded system complexity, APS25 has been designed to support accelerating computation through using coprocessors or symmetric multiprocessing. The core is also designed to be a building block in the growing number of dual-, or multi-core systems.

The APS25 has a Harvard architecture, sixteen 32-bit registers, a 5-stage pipeline, and a parallel multiplier. It supports the AXI4 bus as well as Cortus APS peripherals.

Up to eight co-processors can be added to an APS25 core. The Cortus coprocessor interface allows licensees to add custom coprocessors, for example to accelerate computations in cryptography or signal processing, without knowing details of the internals of the core. Co-processor instructions can be inserted into C-code appearing as function calls.

The small size of APS25 makes it highly suitable for applications requiring two cores. For example a common approach in functional safety is for two cores to execute the same code in lock step and to trigger an alarm if the results do not match. Another application is secure execution where it is desirable to physically separate the execution of secure software by running it on a supervisory CPU while application code runs on another CPU core.

The Cortus v2 instruction set allows the seamless mixing of 16-, 24- and 32-bit instructions without mode switching. This instruction set is richer than the v1 instruction set which used a mix of 16- and 32-bit instructions. Cortus will continue to offer products based on the v1 instruction set (e.g. APS5) in parallel with the new cores based on the v2 instruction set. All C/C++ or assembler code developed for the v1 cores can be used unmodified on the v2 cores.

“Embedded systems are demanding greater computational performance at lower price points than ever before,” said Mr. Michael Chapman, CEO and President of Cortus. “The universe of wirelessly connected devices is growing rapidly, creating a new and massive market opportunity. Just as mobile computing transformed the desktop, we now are now in the midst of another transformation. The Internet of Things, smart sensors and ubiquitous connectivity require a new type of processing platform, one which the Cortus cores are optimized for and is already in place.”

All cores interface to Cortus’ peripherals including Ethernet 10/100 MAC, USB 2.0 Device and USB 2.0 OTG via the efficient APS bus. They also share the simple vectored interrupt structure which ensures rapid, real time interrupt response, with low software overhead.

The APS tool chain and IDE (for C and C++) is available to licensees free of charge, and can be customised and branded for final customer use. Ports of various RTOSs are available such as FreeRTOS, Micrium ?C/OSII.

To date well over 700 million devices have been manufactured containing Cortus processor cores.

94  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Cortus Targets Sensors, Wearables and other IoT Applications With New Low Power on: October 07, 2014, 03:27:44 PM
Montpellier, France, 7th October 2014 – Cortus, a technology leader in low-power, silicon-efficient, 32-bit processor IP, announced the first of a new family of products based on its v2 instruction set today. The APS23 core was built to deliver a new level of efficiency, ease of integration and cost of ownership for low-power, connected intelligent devices. The core reduces embedded system power by optimising the size of the instruction memory.

“The Internet of Things and other smart devices are rewriting the rules for developing systems-on-chip and fuelling huge growth for the semiconductor industry,” said Rich Wawrzyniak, senior analyst for ASIC & SoC at Semico Research. “IoT is creating a massive universe of connected intelligent devices that place stringent demands on processor IP and potentially represent much bigger unit numbers than the mobile market. What’s needed is a minimalist approach to power, silicon area and cost without sacrificing performance or security. This is what Cortus is doing and why Semico believes the company is well-positioned to meet the needs of this emerging market.”

Cortus licenses a range of low-power, 32-bit processor cores for intelligent connected devices. Given the continuing demand to reduce power in system-on-chip (SoC) designs, Cortus has developed a second-generation (v2) instruction set aimed at reducing the size of a system’s instruction memory. APS23 is the first product to use the v2 instruction set and is aimed at low power always on/always listening systems and those with less demanding clock frequencies such as Bluetooth Smart. (See also APS25 news release from Cortus).

“Cortus cores have a proven track record in low power applications such as wireless, smart sensors and touchscreen controllers,” said Mr. Michael Chapman, CEO and President of Cortus, “However we know that today’s smart applications require a new generation of IP - IP designed with a minimalistic approach to system silicon area and power consumption while also providing good cost of ownership and key functionality. We have focused on reducing the size of the instruction memory which is usually the largest single component in a system and are seeing an average 16% improvement in code density over our earlier (v1) cores.”

The APS23 has a Harvard architecture, sixteen 32-bit registers, a 3-stage pipeline and a sequential multiplier. It supports the AXI4-Lite bus as well as Cortus APS peripherals. The core delivers 2.83 DMIPS/MHz and 1.44 CoreMarks/MHz in computational performance. The minimal usable APS23 CPU starts around 9.8 kgates when optimised for area. Dynamic power is 12 microwatts/MHz with a 90 nm process (Cortus cores are synthesisable and foundry independent).

APS3R) in parallel with the new cores based on the v2 instruction set. All C/C++ or assembler code developed for the v1 cores can be used unmodified on the v2 cores.

All cores interface to Cortus’ peripherals including Ethernet 10/100 MAC, USB 2.0 Device and USB 2.0 OTG via the efficient APS bus. They also share the simple vectored interrupt structure, which ensures rapid, real time interrupt response, with low software overhead.
