113  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / XXth FIT World Congress: Across in Dialog with Translators on: August 22, 2014, 03:46:22 PM
Karlsbad, Germany, 22nd August 2014 – From August 4 to 6, 2014, translators, interpreters, and terminologists from more than 70 countries came together for the world congress of the International Federation of Translators (FIT) in Berlin, Germany. Under the motto, "Man vs. Machine", the opportunities and risks of machine translation (MT) and computer-aided translation (CAT) were discussed in numerous lectures and workshops. Across Systems, manufacturer of a leading translation management system, had its own booth at the accompanying trade exhibition and participated in the lecture program.

"The FIT World Congress, which is held every three years, provides us with an ideal setting for enhancing our understanding of the requirements of the translators for a computer-aided translation system. This is a unique opportunity for personal dialog with translators from the world over", says Tanja Wendling, Head of Marketing and Lead Management at Across Systems. At the congress, 1,600 attendees were able to engage in professional exchange with colleagues and tool providers. There was also plenty of time for networking, e.g. at the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the translators' federation. "After three days of exciting conversations and lectures, we had a lot to take along – what's going on in the industry, what do translators expect from a CAT tool, and where is the machine translation trend headed? Whatever the answers to these questions may be, the conference has clearly shown that although machines will change the practical work of the translator in the long run, they should be viewed as a support option, not as a threat."

The next FIT World Congress will be organized by the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators in 2017 and will be held in Brisbane, Australia.

115  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / PoINT Storage Manager - Archive Edition: facing data growth effectively on: August 19, 2014, 04:48:08 PM
Siegen, Germany, 19th August 2014 –  The Archive Edition of PoINT Storage Manager is available from now on. By this new and easy to use edition primary storage can be employed more efficiently by archiving inactive data to secondary storage systems. Thus the higher archiving requirements are fulfilled and at the same time high investment costs can be avoided. By supporting versatile storage technologies the software manufacturer, PoINT Software & Systems GmbH, ensures the independence from specific hardware manufacturers. In addition consistent usage of standards provides an investment protection.

The extreme growth of unstructured data leads to an increasing challenge for companies. Due to economical or corresponding technical reasons this cannot be solved by only extending primary storage systems. As an alternative companies are able to archive inactive data (so called cold data) and data to be archived to secondary storage systems especially designed for long-term archival by implementing PoINT Storage Manager - Archive Edition. The archiving process can be automated on basis of pre-defined policies or manually by a protected web client.

PoINT Storage Manager - Archive Edition offers three archiving methods: Copy Mode, Data Mover Mode and HSM Mode to archive files transparently to secondary storage. Access to archived files is possible at any time through standard operating system primitives.

Depending on different requirements multiple storage technologies, like hard disk, tape and optical, can be applied to use their particular strength optimally. There is no need for additional software as the PoINT Storage Manager - Archive Edition supports these storage technologies natively.

Furthermore by the Archive Edition of PoINT Storage Manager files can be replicated in an automated manner to storage systems of the same or a different storage technology.

About PoINT:
PoINT Software & Systems GmbH is specialized in the development of software products and systems solutions for storage and management of data using all available mass storage technologies like optical, hard disk, tape, cloud and object store. Close collaboration with leading hardware manufacturers enables an early support of innovative storage technologies. Karlsbad, Germany, 13th August 2014 – Based on the technical improvements of the current version 6 of its translation management system, Across Systems GmbH plans to focus on the translation environment in the development of the successor version. To accommodate the requirements and experiences of users even more effectively, a technology round table will be held for the first time on August 27, 2014, allowing experienced translators to discuss possible and necessary further developments with the Across team.

The workshop will concentrate particularly on the optimization of the Across Personal Edition, the Across edition that is especially designed for translators. The most important agenda items will be determined directly by the participating translators. "The objective of the technology round table is to gain an even better understanding of the needs of our users through direct dialog and to find concrete solution approaches for the further development of the Personal Edition", explains Stefan Kreckwitz, Chief Technology Officer at Across Systems. "With our corporate and LSP advisory board, we are already engaged in ongoing dialog with Across users. In the future, we plan to intensify our collaboration with translators with respect to the product development. Depending on the outcome of the first round table, this form of exchange could even develop into a regular event. Of course, this will not result in any change to our product strategy for the time being: The Across Personal Edition will remain free of charge for freelancers and students."

118  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / SETsquared companies wow Barclays on: July 22, 2014, 05:34:31 PM
Southampton, UK, 22nd July 2014 - Innovative start-ups from the SETsquared partnership had a unique opportunity to pitch their technologies to one of the world’s leading banking institutions, Barclays, this month (July).

Six companies from across SETsquared's incubator programme were selected to showcase their innovative business propositions to a large group of senior business and technology directors at Barclays’ global headquarters at Canary Wharf in London

The opportunity is part of SETsquared’s Open Innovation programme, which aims to help corporate organisations access new technologies, solutions and innovations by brokering relationships with SETsquared’s start-up companies, researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs.

It is a mutually beneficial partnership, with the corporates finding new technologies and products and the start-ups getting the chance to pitch to business giants they’d never usually be able to access.

SETsquared and Barclays worked closely together to identify Barclays’ interests. The joint team then identified and selected a wide range of innovative companies across the SETsquared incubator programme that appealed to the bank. Through a series of rigorous reviews and presentations six candidates companies were selected to present at a prestigious event at Canary Wharf.

The event was a huge success with each company stimulating significant interest and opening the doors to further discussion about their products and services. Each company has received feedback from a 35 strong panel of representatives from Barclays, including Corporate Banking, Digital and Mobile services, Wealth Management and group technology.

Simon Bond, Innovation Director at SETsquared, said: “In the past there have been barriers to this kind of collaborative innovation, both on the side of the corporate and the start-up.

“Previously there hasn’t been a platform for corporates to go to where they can find enough solid, relevant start-ups in one place. It made for a laborious and risky process, with no guarantee of finding the right technologies at the end. Similarly, start-ups find it almost impossible to engage with the right people in major corporate organisations. Our Open Innovation programme, which was launched with support from the Intellectual Property Office, is now able to address this.”

“We have been really impressed with the commitment Barclays has made at the most senior levels to reaching out to our innovators and start ups. This is an example of how the right corporate values can be key to exploiting the benefits of UK innovation for the whole of the British economy.”

Adrian Cottington, Director in Global Technology and Infrastructure Services at Barclays agrees: “The Open Innovation programme, with SETsquared acting as the intermediary, has given us the opportunity to access to a pool of cherry-picked talent, all in one place. We’ve been very impressed with the quality of technology companies that SETsquared have presented to us and are looking forward to talking further with the companies.”

121  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Across LSP Day with Participants from 16 Countries on: July 15, 2014, 03:38:18 PM
Karlsbad, Germany, 15th July 2014 – On June 24, Across Systems GmbH held its yearly LSP Day. More than 80 participants from 16 countries attended the first international Across user conference for translation companies. At the conference, specialized lectures mainly conveyed practical knowledge in connection with the use of the translation management system. A special highlight was the presentation of Across Language Server version 6 with its new functions and extensions.

To give international language service providers the opportunity to participate in the conference, this year's lectures were all held in English. After a keynote speech by Gabriele Vollmar, Chairwoman of the German Society for Knowledge Management (GfWM), the new features of the recently released Across version 6 were presented. With its fundamental changes in terms of functionality, performance optimization, and redesign, v6 is an important milestone for Across. The product presentation was followed by further lectures on topics such as the process assistance provided by Across, support as the basis for a good partnership, and a discussion on quality management in the translation process. Alexandros Zekakis of nlg GmbH delivered an interesting case report entitled "From Single Cell to Ecosystem: The Evolution of Across at nlg".

The audience greatly appreciated the colorful program and the opportunity to meet members of the Across team and other participants. "The first international Across LSP conference was a very interesting and productive event I would strongly suggest to anyone interested in learning more about Across. The number of participants, representing 16 different countries allowed also for successful networking, discussions, and knowledge transfer. Across representatives came well prepared with LSP-oriented topics, ranging from technical information and new feature presentations up to consulting. Overall a well-organized event, which we will definitely attend again in the future", says Alexandros Zekakis, Director, Production & Strategic Solutions at nlg GmbH.

Firstly, as this Innovation of the Year Award is voted for by people from the industry, it underlines that other people believe, as we do, that we have market leading product. Secondly, it recognises that employee engagement and behavioural change are key to reducing carbon in an organisation”.

Martin Chilcott, CEO, 2degrees said: “This year’s award shortlisted nominees are an incredible collection of individuals and companies who have changed the way we think about sustainable business. Worldview Learning’s award represents years of commitment to thinking afresh, tackling inefficiencies and trailblazing ground-breaking solutions which have a positive impact on society. The 2degrees network provides businesses with an opportunity to showcase best practice, build relationships on and offline, and inspire others to start their sustainable journey.”

125  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / PoINT Storage Manager Version 5.0 now available on: July 08, 2014, 03:25:48 PM
Siegen, Germany, 8th July 2014 – PoINT Software & Systems GmbH has released version 5.0 of PoINT Storage Manager. This new release includes various novelties by which companies can face the challenges of data growth, administration of inactive data and long-term storage efficiently. From now on also authorized users are able to archive data independently. Furthermore PoINT Software & Systems had extended the list of supported storage systems considerably. Version 5.0 supports now also the operating system Windows Server 2012 R2 and contains an optimized integration of Blu-ray Disc libraries by PoINT Jukebox Manager.

For facing the growth of unstructured data storage concepts are necessary to keep investments for storage extensions and for additional back-up licenses respectively capacities at a minimum. Normally up to 80% of data is unstructured, whereof nearly 70% do not need to be accessible directly. Inactive data stresses increasingly the primary storage capacity and the back-up of primary storage cannot be carried out without problems due to the huge data volumes.
A file-tiering- and archiving software is a solution for companies to purge inactive data from expensive primary storage to cost-efficient secondary storage for archival, but retain transparent data access. PoINT Storage Manager applies the file tiering approach consequently and thus creates more free capacity on the primary storage as well as savings in additional back-up costs.

PoINT Software & Systems GmbH has integrated additional functions addressing the main market requirements of the storage sector. The policy-based file archiving function had been extended by a user driven archiving functionality by which authorized users can purge and archive files independently. For this purpose PoINT Storage Manager 5.0 offers a web client which is available network-wide and can be used without a decided software installation.

Furthermore PoINT Software & Systems has extended the list of supported storage systems considerably. For the integration of object store systems, which are becoming more and more important in the market, now also connectors for Caringo CAStor and HDS HCP (Hitachi Content Platform) are available. Additionally Blu-ray Disc libraries can be integrated for long-term storage and archiving by the established PoINT Jukebox Manager resulting in an advanced functionality. Also the operating system Windows Server 2012 R2 is supported by the new version. For ensuring the server failover the Microsoft Cluster Manager is implied.

About PoINT:
PoINT Software & Systems GmbH is specialized in the development of software products and systems solutions for storage and management of data using all available mass storage technologies like hard disks, magnetic tapes and optical media. 126  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / PDF Days Europe 2014 – New user event shows real form on: July 04, 2014, 08:14:20 PM
Berlin, Cologne, Germany , 4th July 2014 – The PDF Association has successfully brought to life a new user-focused event in the form of the “PDF Days Europe 2014”. In mid-June, 160 participants came to Cologne to seize the opportunity to learn everything there is to know about the different PDF standards, their advantages and their uses. The first day focused on sharing knowledge, allowing visitors to assemble their own personal information package out of three parallel series of developer-neutral presentations. The second day, the “practical day”, was all about the practical and successful implementation of PDF projects using specific solutions. Participants especially praised the practically-minded selection of subjects, the structure of the conference with its three parallel series of presentations, and the many opportunities to speak to suppliers and other users. With this overwhelmingly positive feedback in mind, the PDF Association plans to continue the “PDF Days Europe” next year.

“The PDF Days Europe 2014 offered visitors the unique opportunity to learn everything they needed to know about the PDF standards and the latest news and developments in the world of PDF technology, and all in just two days”, explained Olaf Drümmer, chairman of the PDF Association board. “In particular, the practically-minded nature of the presentations on the second day, which was very strongly focused on projects and solutions, proved to offer significant added value to participants.”

To begin the conference, six proven experts had seven minutes each to introduce one PDF standard, providing a good overview of PDF/A, PDF/E, PDF/UA, PDF/VT, PDF/X and PDF itself.
On the first day of the event, presentations on the use of the PDF format on mobile devices were met with particularly significant interest. These included case studies for scanning with smartphones, clearing invoices, legally signing PDF documents and options for optimising PDF display on mobile devices.

Presentations on e-invoicing with the now officially approved ZUGFeRD data model were also very popular, as were those on the new technical guidelines for replacement scanning, TR-RESISCAN.

Contributing providers began the practical day: each had a closely-measured five minute slot to introduce their product or solution. This brief, fast-paced overview made it easier for participants to decide which questions or solutions they wished to focus on out of the available options. One key issue here was converting scanned and digital documents, and particularly emails, to PDF – and not just to PDF/A for long-term archiving. Both the introduction to and the workshop on universally-accessible PDFs in the form of PDF/UA were very popular with visitors. All in all, the many lively discussions in the presentations showed just how critical the issues presented were to participants.

Interested parties who missed the PDF Days Europe 2014 can view video recordings of the presentations at: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfGR40SWnakjyWjfnmFOz-nsmf3_ap_Ec.
