145  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Experience versus Education - The Long-Standing and Tricky Debate on: May 22, 2014, 04:23:43 PM
London, UK, 22nd May 2014 – Did you know that almost half of the 12 million graduates from 2013 have settled into non-graduate jobs for which they are significantly over-qualified? Or that there are at least 50 graduates competing for every entry-level job? With salaries dropping, living costs rising and more and more graduates settling for unpaid internships, it seems that our top graduates are spiralling into a deep dark hole of debt and unemployment.

The number of young people straddling the line of experience vs education is ever increasing but which holds more weight? Does the university, degree or summer job you choose really matter? These questions have been addressed by numerous large companies with the introduction of graduate schemes to give first-time jobseekers support after they leave university and to ease them into working life. However, many of these schemes require previous industry experience, 2:1 classifications and are unbelievably competitive.

It’s important to clarify that experience and education are not mutually exclusive. They both contribute to an individual’s development in different ways and nurture complementary skills. It would be extremely presumptuous to say that universities aren’t teaching the skills that are required in the workplace. Core written, analytical and evaluation skills are transferable to any professional role, as is the ability to work to tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks at any one time. However, what about Google analytics, Hootsuite and CRM systems? And let’s add professionalism, project ownership and initiative to the mix. Suddenly, the pit into which our top graduates are falling becomes clear. So, how do we bridge this gap?

The majority of students and graduates all share one main skill: they are digital natives! The emergence of online platforms have revolutionised the way businesses get noticed. Now, a new engaging language and a hefty level of commitment are required to capture your target audience’s attention. Students not only have a vested interest in the digital world but they are also bursting with energy and are excited by the prospect of the ‘real world’. This makes them extremely employable during their time at university.

Companies like Task Firm are successfully allowing students to channel their exuberance and positive energy into a part-time job that will differentiate their CV, top up their weekly income and hone in on some core skills. Task Firm provides on-demand assistance to SME’s across Sales and Marketing and tasks range from lead generation and researching prospects to managing social media accounts and writing SEO-friendly articles. These tasks manage to strike the perfect balance between maintaining students’ interests while giving them relevant experience, and all in a way that doesn’t require them to de-prioritise their studies.

Nowadays, real hands-on responsibility and project ownership are becoming harder to get without starting at the bottom of the ladder. However, accepting the inter-dependence of education and experience and by allowing intelligent students to become a part of a company while they are still discovering their professional interests may just be the key to unlock a whole new generation of high-flying entrepreneurs.

147  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Bell Labs challenges global inventors to redefine the future as it launches the on: May 20, 2014, 07:08:33 PM
Paris, France, 20th May 2014 –  Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU), today celebrated the 50th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation, one of the strongest pieces of evidence supporting the “Big Bang” theory of the origin of the universe. This discovery in 1964 by Bell Labs scientists Arno Penzias and Robert A. Wilson earned the researchers a Nobel Prize in Physics and provided the basis for future astronomical discoveries.

On the occasion of this celebration, Bell Labs is launching a program to expand the scope of innovation at Bell Labs, in keeping with being the world’s pre-eminent research organization in the field of information and communications networking. At the heart of this program is the introduction of the Bell Labs Prize, a competition that will give any researcher, in participating countries around the globe, the chance to introduce their ideas to the world, and collaborate with world-renowned Bell Labs researchers. The Bell Labs Prize winners will take home cash awards worth as much as $100,000, and the chance to further develop their ideas at Bell Labs, where possible. At the heart of the Prize, are some of Bell Labs core convictions that highlight its new direction and mission including:

• The desire to collaborate with the global innovation community (both inside and outside Bell Labs)
• Researchers and innovators need to be focused on the great challenges that will enable the future 10 years from now, that means to solve problems that require a 10x improvement (or more) in multiple dimensions
• These solutions are at the heart of Bell Labs focus on 10x game-changing research and cross-discipline ‘FutureX’ projects that attempt to solve the big problems (many with currently unknown answers to ‘x’)

In addition to the unveiling of the Bell Labs Prize, plans for a new remote Bell Labs office near Tel-Aviv, Israel were also announced today by Alcatel-Lucent CEO Michel Combes.

“I am excited to see the ideas that come to light through this process, and to introduce many talented young scientists and engineers into the Bell Labs community,” said Marcus Weldon, president of Bell Labs and CTO of Alcatel-Lucent. “They will be joining some of the brightest scientists, engineers and mathematicians in the world, who continue to develop world-changing innovations.”

Today’s Big Bang Bash celebration will take place at Bell Labs facility in Holmdel, New Jersey, in the shadow of the “Horn Antenna”, which historically served NASA’s passive satellite program, Project ECHO, and was also instrumental in the Big Bang discovery. In attendance were Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, as well as notable scientists and Bell Labs President and Alcatel-Lucent CTO, Marcus Weldon.

Commenting on the celebration, Weldon said, “I think it is fitting that today, as we honor and celebrate this incredible, Nobel Prize-winning achievement by Arno and Bob, we are launching a program intended to inspire world-changing discoveries and innovations by young researchers that may one day walk in their footsteps. The Bell Labs Prize is intended to recognize innovators with the ability and vision to challenge the common assumptions, and find ways to revolutionize the way we live, work, communicate, collaborate and connect with each other and our digital world.

About the Bell Labs Prize:
The Bell Labs Prize is a competition rewarding 10x game-changing proposals in the field of information and communications technologies and related software systems and applications. The competition is open to anyone in one of the participating countries, who ‘owns’ an idea and meets the eligibility requirements.

Three prize winners will receive a grant of either $100,000 (grand prize), $50,000 (second place) or $25,000 (third place). Additionally, through the process, Bell Labs may engage with other contest participants as part of the company’s recruitment investment in top talent. The deadline to enter the contest is Tuesday, July 15, 2014. For more information, visit the Bell Labs Prize website. No purchase or payment necessary to enter the competition. Void where prohibited.

About the Cosmic Microware Background Radiation Discovery:
Back in 1964, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson were conducting experiments with the Holmdel Horn Antenna, an extremely sensitive device originally used to detect radio waves that were bounced off Echo balloon satellites, and later the Telstar, the first active communications satellite. These radio waves were so weak, that it became critical to eliminate all possible interference in order to detect them.

Despite taking all conceivable steps to eliminate interference, they continually detected a strange, buzzing noise that was coming from all parts of the sky at all times of day and night. They did a range of additional testing on the equipment, and even removed some pigeons that were nesting in the antenna and their associate detritus. Still, the sound persisted. They ultimately determined that the noise was coming from outside of our galaxy.

Almost by chance, they later learned that researchers astrophysicists Robert H. Dicke, Jim Peebles and David Wilkinson at nearby Princeton University were looking for a way to detect residual radiation that they believed would have resulted from the Big Bang. As it turned out, the radiation detected by Penzias and Wilson was a perfect match for what the Princeton researchers had predicted, and hence made history.
Quotes:
Arno Penzias said: “When we first heard that inexplicable ‘hum’, we didn’t understand its significance, and we never dreamed it would be connected to the origins of the universe. It wasn’t until we exhausted every possible explanation for the sound’s origin that we realized we had stumbled upon something big.”

Robert A. Wilson said: “We’ve often said that there was no ‘a-ha’ moment – we were simply trying to explain something that we didn’t understand. It’s inspiring to know the implications of one’s research, and that you form a part of a vast scientific legacy.”

John C. Mather, Senior Astrophysicist, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center said: “Looking back, we can clearly see that Penzias and Wilson sparked the growth of an industry that has changed cosmology from speculation to spectacular precision, with many thousands of published papers, thousands of scientists and engineers involved, and already two Nobel prizes and perhaps a third yet to come. What an amazing result!”

Bath, UK, 20th May 2014 – UK tech startup Cloudfind today announced its participation as a Gold Sponsor of the Salesforce1 World Tour event in London’s ExCeL Centre, May 22nd, 2014. Cloudfind will demonstrate how its new app helps enterprises improve collaboration by automatically tagging files stored in the cloud according to the customers, projects and topics they relate to.

“People lose time every day, tracking down just the right files to share with colleagues or customers, sifting by hand through digital clutter,” commented Cloudfind CEO Sebastian Toke-Nichols. “Cloudfind recovers that lost productivity by enabling users to zero-in on relevant information using simple tags, generated automatically, that connect related documents. The ability to do that with third party cloud storage vendors gives enterprises greater choice and flexibility.”

By integrating seamlessly with leading cloud storage solutions such as Google Drive, Cloudfind provides a way to combine the low cost and high convenience of file sync-and-share with the power and flexibility of the Salesforce platform.

As a Gold Sponsor at the London stop on the Salesforce1 World Tour, Cloudfind will be running live demonstrations of its automated tagging capability throughout the day at booth #142 on the show floor.

What started in the IT-industry is being welcomed in many other industries, such as foodstuff, travel and automobiles," said Ulrich Henes, founder of the Localization Institute in the U.S.A. and co-host of Localization World. The keynote address of Magnus Lindkvist, trend and future researcher, on June 5, and the keynote panel titled "Keep Calm and Carry On" on June 6, shed light on the reasons.

The program is subdivided into 9 areas, in order to optimally address visitors and their different needs across industries. For example, the track "Advanced Localization Management“, is considered the heart of Localization World and provides additional information about trends, processes, technologies and influences that shape the localization world. The content spectrum reaches from core competencies to special slots that provide in-depth information on selected topics.

Shortly after the opening on June 5, Juliet Elliott, Service Owner, Marketing Translation Service at SAP and Hajo von Kracht, Senior Director Marketing Localization at SAP will talk about the efficiency gains in the area of marketing localization. Content efficiency as well as process efficiency are contributing factors. In another presentation, Nataly Kelly, VP Brand Development at Smartling and TAUS founder Jaap van der Meer, will explain how translation technologies have developed from the era of evolution to the era of convergence, in which translations will be embedded in all apps, devices, and screens. The IBM project managers Micky Chiang and Han Sheng Liang lead participants on the way to localization. The following panel discussion on how localization effects the decision making process that leads to a content strategy will conclude the day. The panelists are Rahel Anne Bailie, Director of Intentional Design, Diana Ballard, Sales & Marketing at the Logos Group, Lucie Hyde, Director of the European Content-Teams at eBay, Ann Rockley, Founder and President of The Rockley Group, as well as Buddy Scalera, SVP Multichannel Content Strategy at Ogilvy CommonHealth Worldwide, while Scott Abel, the internationally recognized content strategist, will moderate.

The second day of Localization World features comprehensive presentation of how LinkedIn controls its central translation processes and of suitable tools and platforms to increase performance. Presenters will be Talia Baruch, Senior Manager International Products at LinkedIn and Masha Buka, who has played a major role at the Russian side of the web based social network. Another interesting highlight will be the presentation of Siobhán Harding, senior internationalization program manager at Microsoft. She will show how the software company managed to go from updating 48 language versions every 4 months to 106 language with weekly and in the US uniform publication cycles.

Several round tables and workshops will take place the day prior to the start of the conference. Participants can choose e.g., between a roundtable on Life Sciences Business – that builds on an event from last year, a roundtable on the localization of games, or a workshop that addresses quality management of translations.

151  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Project Management Difficulties Solved for Language Service Providers at 2014 As on: May 13, 2014, 06:44:19 PM
Glendale, CA, USA, 13th May 2014 – Across Systems, a leading software platform for all corporate language resources and translation processes, announced today that the Company will be attending the 2014 Association of Language Companies Annual Conference as a Silver Sponsor to meet with interested Language Service Providers (LSPs) about ways to increase efficiency of the project management process using Across version 6.0. The conference will take place in Palm Springs CA May 18 – 21, 2014.

The Association of Language Companies helps to promote professional stature through industry advocacy and professional development of language service company owners and senior management. This year's conference will provide networking and educational opportunities for over 200 attendees.
LSPs must constantly find creative ways to be as resourceful as possible to earn and keep a customer’s business. Across version 6.0 helps LSPs increase project management efficiency to stay competitive by

• Minimizing administrative aspects of project management: Many tasks are very time consuming such as putting customer files into workable formats for translation, which can take hours or even days. Across v6 can handle up to 50 file formats and pre/post processing which saves considerable time resulting in more time for important activities and less expensive customer quotes.

• Reducing nightmares associated with managing complex projects: Working with multiple languages, vendors, files, delivery dates and questions can be difficult to manage and deliver on time. Across offers an online tool that manages complexity with an easy to use platform that minimizes manual, time-wasting activities such as adding new languages and replacing old files with new ones. In addition, questions are easily managed within the system across multiple users and customers and FTP sites are no longer needed.

• Maintaining project quality: Quality is important for customer retention. The Across quality manager can be customized and turned on during translation or engaged at task completion to ensure that linguists identify document errors for correction. Another valuable feature is the ability to require that errors be checked and corrected before delivery to the customer. This ensures quality and consistency while avoiding embarrassing mistakes.

Nancy Cardone, business development manager for Across Systems, will be in attendance to share valuable advice on how to increase project management effectiveness through the use of Across‘ innovative translation management software.

“After being on all sides of this industry from customer to language service provider to technology provider, I have experienced most aspects of this business and am passionate about helping others learn from my experience. I understand how tough the job of a project manager is and how unappreciated they often feel.” says Cardone. “Across has worked tirelessly the last 10 years to develop a tool that automates the most basic processes so language service providers can become more customer centric and give their customers the best service possible. Technology is the future of our industry.”

Interested parties may contact Cardone at americas[at]across[dot]net to set up a time for a personal consultation and and learn more about the following exciting new version 6.0 features:

1. Project Management Cockpit – to manage the cumbersome process of project management including managing files, questions and deadlines, finding available linguists, version control and overall communication.

2. New and improved user interface – to handle complex projects with an easy to use and intuitive interface.

3. Across Dashboard – to keep track of project deliverables using fully customizable dashlets to display relevant KPIs at a glance.

4. Across Data Cube – to easily access important analytical data from the translation process using MS Excel for better decision making.

5. crossWeb Review Mode – to allow internal or external reviewers an easy way to review and provide comments without extensive technology knowledge.

152  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / SETsquared start-ups go stateside on: May 13, 2014, 05:43:45 PM
Southampton, UK, 13th May 2014 – Two SETsquared companies have been awarded coveted places on one of the world’s most prestigious accelerator programmes.

iGeolise, based at SETsquared’s innovation centre at the University of Surrey, and Industrial Phycology, from the Bath centre, are taking part in MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s) eTeam programme.

MIT is recognised as one of the top research universities on the planet. Alumni founded or co-founded companies include giants such as Intel, Qualcomm, Dropbox and Bose.

Its scheme is open to only the most promising of start-ups from across the world and immerses them in an intensive, two-week accelerator programme.

World-class MIT practitioners and lecturers educate and mentor the start-ups, introducing them to entrepreneurs and investors in MIT and Massachusetts’ extensive ecosystem of executives, investors and entrepreneurs.

iGeolise and Industrial Phycology secured their places after impressing SETsquared judges - who have just two places on the scheme to allocate each year - with their pitching skills and business plans.

Simon Bond, SETsquared’s innovation director, said: “It’s always an incredibly tough decision picking just two companies from our talent pool to take part in the programme. The quality of businesses among our five incubators is so high that it does make competition fierce.

“However, these two start-ups in particular have displayed that they are ready and raring to ‘take on the states’ and we believe they are the perfect candidates. The US market is a notoriously tough one to crack so taking part in this programme will give iGeolise and Industrial Phycology the very best start on that journey.”

Charlie Davies, co-founder and director of iGeolise, said: "Growing a business is like working on something you can never really finish, the moment you achieve one thing five new things become possible. International expansion is our new opportunity and I know The Boston MIT programme will help us really start to make it a reality.”

Dr Dan Murray from Industrial Phycology, added: “The USA takes a much more enthusiastic view of industrial sciences, with large amounts of public and private investment funnelled in to the area. It’s therefore a market we’re very keen to tap into going forward. Attending the MIT scheme will allow us to meet and learn from the best science and technology companies in the world and meet the people who have supported them. We will then bring all this new knowledge home and apply it to help grow our company.”

153  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / CCS shortlisted for Leading Lights Awards 2014 on: May 12, 2014, 04:51:50 PM
Cambridge, UK, 12th May 2014 – CCS (Cambridge Communication Systems Limited), developer of the world’s first self-organising small cell microwave backhaul system for mobile networks, has been shortlisted for a Light Reading Leading Lights Award. Featured in the Best New Product (Mobile) category, the nomination recognises CCS’ development of a “potentially market-leading product that, through engineering and technical excellence, enables the deployment of profitable next-generation mobile services.”

CCS’ small cell backhaul system is the only solution that meets all key requirements of mobile network operators. The combination of its unique self-organising capability and multipoint-to-multipoint architecture delivers higher resilience plus considerable savings by reducing manual labour costs during planning, installation and ongoing network expansion. The small outdoor device can be easily deployed in under 15 minutes and only one unit is required per lamppost, which is more acceptable to urban planners. The system offers increased flexibility with dynamic bandwidth management and capacity that’s more easily scaled. There’s no need to re-visit existing sites when new nodes are added because existing nodes automatically re-organise and re-align – unlike conventional microwave systems, which would need continual re-planning and re-alignment as the small cell network grows. CCS’ backhaul system enables cost-effective small cell deployment in a flexible, organic way as additional capacity is required. Having executed a number of trials, CCS announced its first commercial deployment with China Mobile in early 2014.

The Leading Lights Awards, this year celebrating its 10th anniversary, recognises the most innovative and inspiring companies working within the communications services sector. The announcement of the finalists for the 16 award categories is the last stage before the winners are revealed at the awards dinner on 17 June, at The Adler Planetarium in Chicago.

Speaking of the nomination, Steve Greaves, CEO and co-founder of CCS commented; “We are honoured to be shortlisted for a Leading Lights Award in this category, especially in such a competitive year. It acknowledges all the hard work that’s gone into developing a backhaul solution that essentially makes small cells viable, and will help the mobile industry deal with the capacity challenges that lie ahead.”

For the full list of nominees in this category, see here: http://www.lightreading.com/ethernet-ip/ethernet-services/leading-lights-awards-2014-the-finalists/d/d-id/708932?page_number=3
