128  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Internet can empower women and eradicate inequalities says Cherie Blair on: July 01, 2014, 08:42:15 PM
Cambridge, UK, 1st July 2014 –  “The internet and modern mobile technology enables us to address inequalities between men and women and to drive growth on a global scale as never before,” said Cherie Blair, addressing industry leaders at the Future of Wireless International Conference in Cambridge last night. Speaking as the founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, which helps women build businesses in developing and emerging markets, Mrs Blair urged the audience to harness innovation and forge new collaborations to help eliminate poverty and empower women around the world.

“With limited broadband coverage, the mobile phone is already the primary way many Africans access the internet, with some 84 million internet-enabled mobile devices now in use,” said Cherie Blair. “But women in remote rural areas have even more disadvantage to overcome and without sustainable and scalable investment and intervention, they are in danger of falling still further behind those who do have access to the internet or mobile technology, which means disadvantage as well for their families, their communities and their countries. Making a real dent in this inequality will take cooperation across all sectors - public, private and non-profit.”

Cherie Blair was the guest speaker at the dinner for the Future of Wireless International Conference, organised by Cambridge Wireless (CW) – the leading not-for-profit global community for companies involved in the research, development and application of wireless and mobile technologies – in partnership with the Government’s UKTI (UK Trade & Investment) Department. The conference is focused on how wireless technologies can make a positive change to peoples’ lives and address societal and global challenges. Some 400 industry experts, academics and international development specialists are debating topics from supporting economic development and improving literacy and health, to ensuring public safety, improving the sustainability of the earth’s resources and cultivating entrepreneurship.

“The Cambridge Wireless conference provides a valuable forum for generating new ideas and sparking new collaborations for good purposes,” said Cherie Blair. “For many women, the internet is much more than a convenience; it is a crucial lifeline for them but it also gives all of us the ability, through mentoring, to provide life-changing support with just a few hours of our time. We can use it to reach out across the virtual world to help women to improve their lives and the lives of those around them. The rewards can be incalculable.”

In her address, Cherie Blair pointed to examples of how this wireless technology can work. The Cherie Blair Foundation’s Mentoring Programme has partnered with Qualcomm Wireless Reach™ to use 3G tablets so that business professionals around the world can become mentors to women entrepreneurs in Malaysia. This programme thus enhances women’s skills and knowledge in the areas of business and technology and helps them grow and maintain their own successful businesses.

Another example is the Foundation’s new Skilling for Change programme in partnership with Accenture and CARE International, which involves development of mobile technologies designed to provide easier access to mobile banking services for women entrepreneurs in Rwanda. Focused on business plan development, financial literacy and investor readiness, the programme also provides tailored skills training and online mentoring.

“We were delighted that Cherie Blair came to address our conference dinner and were privileged to hear about the valuable, life-changing work of the Cherie Blair Foundation,” said David Cleevely CBE, Chair of CW. “She has thrown down a challenge for the wireless industry to play its part in empowering and supporting women, their families and communities around the globe. Listening to other speakers during the day at the conference, I know there is a real enthusiasm and commitment to deliver.”

Other speakers at the CW conference include, Sally Uren, Chief Executive at Forum for the Future; Carolina Costa, Managing Director at Orange Innovation UK; Angela Baker, Senior Manager, Qualcomm Wireless Reach; Prof. Simon Saunders, Co-founder, Real Wireless; Steve Jones, Chair of Trustees at the Humanitarian Centre; Finbarr Moynihan, General Manager, Sales and Marketing at MediaTek; and Pete Hutton, EVP and President of Product Groups at ARM.

The 6th Annual CW Future of Wireless International Conference continues today at The Møller Centre and Churchill College in Cambridge, sponsored by: UKTI, The KTN, Accenture, MediaTek, Real Wireless, Qualcomm Wireless Reach, Intel, Aricent, Cushman & Wakefield, Rohde & Schwarz, TTP Group, Microlease/Agilent, Cambridge Consultants, S-Tech Insurance, IC Group, u-blox AG, InterDigital UK, Arkessa, Broadcom, Anite, Ranplan, Jaltek Group, Freescale, Microwave Marketing, Real VNC and Otaniemi.

The presentations and slideshow of event photos are available to view on the CW website. You can view these by clicking on the following link: http://www.cambridgewireless.co.uk/futureofwireless/Resources/

131  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Stannah 2000kg goods passenger lift – supporting King’s College Hospital with a on: June 24, 2014, 02:54:44 PM
London, UK, 24th June 2014. – A special Stannah 2000kg goods attendant lift was the perfect solution for the safe transit of goods and people in the Receipt and Distribution Unit of King’s College Hospital Business Park in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Stannah provided this unique solution to meet the specific lift requirements of the hospital. This industrial-duty, hydraulic-drive goods passenger lift is responsible for the movement of patient beds and supplies for King’s College Hospital – an acute care and major teaching facility on the same complex. It allows goods to be accompanied by up to two people whilst the lift travels between two floors at a speed of 0.140 m/s – a distance of 3225mm.

This through-entrance bed lift is finished inside with galvanised steel walls and anti-slip steel chequer plate floor to ensure a robust interior throughout the service life of the lift. Fully automatic 4-panel centre-opening car and landing doors, measuring 1400mm x 2100mm, are finished in steel, as is the car, which measures a roomy 1400mmW x 2400mmD. A push-button control panel is provided in the lift car and adjacent to each landing door for the attendant(s) to use. Access to operate the lift from the landing is via key card operation to ensure use only by designated persons.

This hydraulic goods lift was specified by surveyor, Wayne Everitt, of Wilby & Burnett, a multi-disciplinary practice of Chartered Surveyors and Chartered Architects based in Saffron Walden: “We specified this lift mainly because it did not require a pit. We were able to retrofit with relative ease thanks to its structure-supported capability – no structural shaft was required, or a significant foundation. We simply cast a small raft foundation and the lift fitted easily. We have also installed a Stannah passenger lift on the King’s College Hospital Business Park, and both lifts have proved cost-effective people-and-goods-moving solutions.”

The goods attendant lift complies with the 2006/42/EC Machinery Directive. Installing, owning and operating a goods lift helps owners to meet Manual Handling Regulations and improves the logistics within the building – all with the reassurance of continued product service and maintenance by the local branch of Stannah Lift Services (3 visits per year), part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support.

136  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Operators look for more from Enterprise small cells on: June 09, 2014, 06:54:42 PM
London, UK, 9th June 2014 – Independent research commissioned by ip.access – the leading specialist manufacturer and supplier of small cell solutions – has shown that simply providing traditional coverage and capacity solutions alone are no longer the only keys to wide scale Enterprise deployments of small cell technology.

In a Maravedis-Rethink survey of 20 tier one mobile network operators, all of whom were intending to deploy small cells before 2017, only one fifth said that coverage and capacity alone were sufficient reasons to drive Enterprise small cell deployment. Meanwhile some 70 per cent of operators worldwide wanted to see additional benefits as part of any deployment.

The research also covered the views of 20 organizations considering new technologies for retail or banking premises, two key target markets for operator-provided Enterprise small cells.

Here the survey highlighted some common ground between operator-thinking and that of their target customers – but also at least one significant disconnect.

When looking at the additional services that could be deployed using small cell solutions both operator and enterprise respondents highlighted location and presence-based services coupled with targeted marketing and advertising. Both groups also strongly highlighted security and authentication benefits.

Especially revealing however was the feedback from the Enterprise customers, in the retail and banking sectors, that the ability to connect mobile subscriber data to their existing big-data analytics systems was the second most important objective. This was noticeably higher than the operators ranked big-data system harmonisation at present.

Caroline Gabriel, who led the research at Rethink said: “There is a definite and significant value-added opportunity here for operators who can react first and fastest to understand the key drivers within their target Enterprise customers and offer small cell solutions that can underpin presence-based marketing and big data analytics. It is largely untapped territory and is ripe for exploitation.

“What’s more,” she added, “small cells have some significant advantages over other potential solutions – such as Wi-Fi and beacon technology – as they are able to pick up information from the SIM card which adds greater security in areas such as authentication.”

Simon Brown, CEO of ip.access added: “We commissioned this research to independently test our thinking and approach to the marketplace. It’s revealed many things we now know will be important, and also provided us with further valuable insights we will take into our product development and marketing.

“One thing is clear,” he added. “The moves we have made to develop a specialist, stand-alone presenceCell, and to bring our experience from the security world into play alongside some big-data analytics capability looks to have strong resonance with the target market. All of which means we have the solution for operators that want to move now.”

137  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Across Systems Publishes White Paper on Information Security in Translation Proc on: June 09, 2014, 04:44:53 PM
Karlsbad, Germany, 9th June 2014 – Across Systems GmbH has published a white paper with recommendations on how enterprises can step up the information security in translation processes. In this way, the manufacturer of the translation management system Across Language Server wants to heighten the awareness of the risks in translation projects.

During the development of a product innovation, associated information (e.g. instruction manuals or descriptions) is often translated at an early stage in order to keep the time to market as short as possible. To prevent this information from leaking to the public ahead of time, many enterprises already define measures within the scope of compliance management. "Secure data transfer continues to be a crucial subject. The translation of documents and the collaboration with external language service providers and translators around the globe is associated with special challenges. Still, too little attention is often paid to information security in this area", says Stefan Kreckwitz, CTO at Across Systems GmbH. Therefore, Across recommends the following:

Organizational Measures
To ensure the availability of the data, the customer should determine requirements for the external language service provider, evidence of whose fulfillment the language service provider must provide. For example, this includes regular backups, recovery plans, virus protection, monitoring of critical systems, or lightning protection.

Integrity in Translation Processes
To prevent unauthorized changes, an authentication obligation is imperative in the translation environment. Moreover, a log is recommended in order to be able to track who changed which contents, and when. Moreover, internal and external employees should regularly participate in training sessions for the systems employed. This ensures correct use of the available technical functions.

Confidentiality in Translation Processes
Though every business relationship is based on trust, enterprises should take precautions to ensure that particularly sensitive contents in original texts and translations as well as the associated translation memory and corporate terminology do not remain on external computers that are not authorized.

Closed Supply Chains Minimize the Risk
Since organizational measures cannot adequately ensure the security of the information in distributed translation processes, it is advisable to introduce a translation management system with a translation memory, terminology systems, and project and workflow control utilities as central components. Such a system provides a closed, integrated work and system environment in which all parties cooperate on a shared data basis and, ideally, with different access rights. Moreover, it makes sure that processes remain transparent and data are not stored on local computers or leave the protected system in an uncontrolled manner. Furthermore, provided data can be limited to a specific purpose and a limited time period.

138  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Student start-up talent honoured on: June 09, 2014, 03:42:53 PM
Southampton, UK, 9th June 2014 – Some of the UK’s most promising student and graduate entrepreneurs were honoured last week as SETsquared held its annual Student Enterprise Awards last Thursday (June 5).

Among the stars picking up gongs were young people solving third world sanitation problems, those changing the face of voting and students counting Jaguar Land Rover among their clients.

SETsquared is a partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey which, as well as incubating high-tech start-ups, encourages entrepreneurialism among students at the five institutions. Its Student Enterprise Awards, which take place every year, seek to honour the cream of the crop when it comes to business-minded students.

The student and graduate winners were:
• TickBox from the University of Exeter (Best Student Start-Up and People’s Choice Award) – The business helps people to compare election candidates and was launched during the European elections in May. It has secured £50,000 of funding so far.
• Instabear, from the University of Exeter (Best Graduate Start-Up) – The company provides instant photo printing services from social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. It counts Jaguar Land Rover and Jack Wills among its corporate clients and had a turnover of 60k in the year ending February 2014.
• SanEco, from the University of Southampton (Best Social Enterprise) – The social enterprise helps tackle sanitation issues in Kenya while helping the people there earn a living. Among its schemes are toilets, which convert human waste into natural fertilisers and can be sold to farmers. Since its inception SanEco has helped more than 11,000 people.

Champions of student enterprise from each of the universities were also honoured and The University of Bristol also won an award for its Spark scheme, which aims to help create a new generation of entrepreneurs by putting business-minded students through an entrepreneurial ‘bootcamp’ course.

Simon Bond, Innovation Director at SETsquared, says the calibre of this year’s finalists reflects the improvements he has seen in student entrepreneurialism over the last five years.

He said: “It is so encouraging to see young people being fearless in setting up their own businesses. Traditionally, the entrepreneurialism route has been seen as one of risk and students have steered away from it, favouring the relative comfort of climbing onto the rungs of the corporate ladder.

“A shift is beginning to emerge and figures from the Office for National Statistics show the number of self-employed young people has already risen by 71,000 since the start of the economic crisis. Perhaps this is evidence that programmes like Dragons’ Den, initiatives from the Government and projects such as our own could well be contributing to an increase in young entrepreneurs.”

Phil Cameron, a former University of Exeter student who produced award-winning theatre in London & New York and founded airport lounge business, No.1 Traveller, was the guest of honour at the awards and echoed Simon’s comments.

The entrepreneur added: “It’s inspiring to see so many young, enthusiastic entrepreneurs innovating and pursuing their ambitions, particularly in such a harsh job market.

“Starting a business which has any chance of success is hard - it needs vision and a thoroughness of execution - but more people can and should do it, because the rewards of steering a vision to commercial success is well worth the effort. My advice to any young entrepreneur would be to embrace the challenge and never compromise on the goal.”
Ben Bradshaw MP, who attended the awards, said: “It’s incredibly important for our country to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs. Encouraging and helping young people to develop ideas and make commercial success of them is what will help us succeed as a country.”

139  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Stannah Levelmaster low-rise platform goods lift – Solving stock flow in a split on: June 03, 2014, 04:20:02 PM
UK, 3rd June 2014 – A Stannah Levelmaster low-rise platform goods lift proved the best solution for shifting boxes in the split-level storeroom of the Bromley outlet of Tiger Stores, a leading Danish retail chain offering a wide range of affordable homeware, toys, stationery, toiletries and accessories.

The Levelmaster unites two floors, moving goods over a distance of 1055mm between ground level delivery and lower ground storage. Finished in durable black baked enamel (RAL 9005) with upper front-facing glass panels for visibility, the step lift brings robust service to a tough stock-handling environment.

Access on the upper level is via a space-saving, half-height, left-hand hinged door, with a double-hinged swing door at lower ground level. Safety and grip during transit is further ensured via wall-facing, half-height chequer-plate sides and floor.

The Stannah Levelmaster carries a rated load of up to 2000kg, and the lift is supplied in a self-supporting structure for quick, easy installation with the minimum of builder’s work.

The Levelmaster was specified by Robert Walsh, Project Coordinator of HLP UK, a leading UK multi-disciplinary architectural services company: “We opted for the Stannah Levelmaster as it best suited the site’s constraints. The Tiger Store is located within a busy pedestrianised high street with no frontal access for deliveries. Goods arrive through the shopping mall service yard at the rear of the building. The storeroom is split-level from the service yard and the lift had to be able to take palleted loads between two levels, a nominal but important distance when it comes to the management of frequent, heavy, bulky stock.”

This is just the latest of 8 Stannah lift installations across Tiger’s UK stores, currently running at 29 but expanding fast.

Installing, owning and operating a Levelmaster low-rise platform goods lift helps owners to meet Manual Handling Regulations and improves the logistics within the building – all with the reassurance of continued product service and maintenance by the local branch of Stannah Lift Services (3 visits per year), part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support.

Edible insects, mobile apps and giving socks to homeless people…just some of the money-spinning ideas that university students from across the South have used to start up their own businesses.

Now they’re preparing to be honoured for their entrepreneurial spark as SETsquared holds its annual Student Enterprise Awards at the University of Exeter Students’ Guild on June 5.

SETsquared is a partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. As well as incubating high tech start ups, it exists to encourage entrepreneurialism among students at the five institutions.

It runs everything from pitching training to app-building competitions in a bid to up the entrepreneurial skills of students in the South and its annual awards honour the cream of the crop.

Awards will be given for best student start-up, best graduate start-up, best social enterprise and the university with the best enterprise experience.

Among those up for gongs on the night are:
• A group of students from the University of Bath who have solved the eternal problem of finding a partner for multi-person sports like tennis and squash. They have created an app that lets people find others who are stuck for a partner to play with. They’ve already secured £36,000 investment and plan to launch their app this summer.
• A University of Exeter graduate whose Jollie Goods business donates a pair of socks to a homeless person everytime someone buys a pair. Ed Vickers set the business up in his first year at University after being inspired by his time volunteering at a homeless shelter and ran it at first from his bedroom. Now his products are sold by retail giant, John Lewis, and last Christmas alone his sales resulted in more than 2,000 pairs of socks being donated to the homeless.
• The Bug Shack – a company farming and selling edible insects to solve the world’s problem of creating a sustainable protein source. Run by ambitious University of Southampton graduate Jenny Josephs, the business aims to sell at markets, festivals and online at first, before selling to supermarkets within 10 years.
• A social enterprise based at the University of Bristol which provides underprivileged children across the world with stationery and better teaching by donating a percentage of the money it makes from stationery contracts with businesses in the UK. Balance Stationery is monitoring its partnered schools by their pass rates before and after training and supplies to measure the impact of its work.
• An app developed by young entrepreneurs at the University of Surrey to help their fellow students find out about things going on around them. The app aimed to help connect people with what was going on around the campus and is now being adapted for use in other universities.

Simon Bond, Innovation Director at SETsquared, says the calibre of this year’s finalists reflects the improvements he has seen in student entrepreneurialism over the last five years.
