71  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Small cell microwave backhaul pioneer CCS triumphs at IET Innovation Awards 2014 on: November 20, 2014, 06:13:28 PM
Cambridge, UK, 20th November 2014 - CCS (Cambridge Communication Systems Limited), creator of the world’s first self-organising small cell microwave backhaul system for mobile networks, today announces that it has won a coveted IET Innovation Award. CCS beat a record number of entrants to be shortlisted in the hotly contested Communications category, and was announced as the overall winner at a gala award ceremony held in London on 19th November.

The 10th edition of the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) Innovation Awards celebrates the very best global innovations in science, engineering and technology. The awards were independently judged by a panel of more than 80 esteemed industry and academic experts, who this year presided over a record number of entries across all 16 award categories – more than 400 submissions from 30 countries.

Commenting on CCS’ award submission, the judging panel said: “This entry has developed a high-capacity backhaul for 4G/LTE small cells to alleviate capacity issues encountered in wireless systems. The system is capable of transmitting at 480 Mbps and has advantages of easy installation, does not need continuous network planning, site re-visits or antenna re-alignment. This is a significant advance for the communications sector.”

CCS will be making space for the IET Innovation Award in its growing 2014 awards cabinet, which already hosts a Small Cell Forum Industry Award (Backhaul Design and Technology Innovation Category) and a Cambridge News Top Innovations Award, as well as a flurry of industry award shortlistings in recognition of outstanding innovation.
As pioneers of the first self-organising small cell backhaul system that makes outdoor small cells truly viable, CCS’ snowballing awards success has been matched by its rapidly accelerating commercial momentum. Last month, CCS expanded its first commercial deployment with China Mobile – the world’s largest mobile operator – with a further installation in its Fujian Mobile branch.
The IET Innovation award was accepted last night by CCS CEO and Co-Founder Steve Greaves, who said: “Simply to be shortlisted for the IET Innovation Awards is a huge honour, so the whole team at CCS is genuinely elated to be taking home the winner’s prize for Communications from one of the most prestigious awards in technology.”

72  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Successful Launch in Stuttgart: Across at the tekom Annual Conference on: November 19, 2014, 04:53:01 PM
Karlsbad, Stuttgart, Germany, 19th November 2014 – With about 4,000 conference participants and visitors, the tekom annual conference 2014 again served as a key industry hub for technical writers, information developers, and marketing managers from industrial, software, and service enterprises. From November 11 to 13, Across Systems GmbH was present at the International Congress Center in Stuttgart, Germany, with a motivated team and numerous highlights.
Apart from the current version 6 of the Across Language Server, the visitors to the Across booth were already able to get a first glance of some new features of the successor version of the translation management system. The lectures and tool presentations at the conference were also well attended and sparked some exciting conversations. For example, Ulrich Haag of Quark Software Inc. and Christian Weih of Across presented the direct integration of translation workflows in the Quark Publishing Platform.

Highlights at the Exhibition Booth
Like last year, the candy bar with its sweet temptations was the scene of informal conversations at the Across booth. The Swabian party was another crowd puller. With beer, pretzels, and music, Across showed that business does not need to be dull and boring. "Every year, the tekom is a very special event for us. It offers unique opportunities for intensive personal interchange with existing and prospective customers and partners. We would like to thank all who visited our exhibition booth, our presentations, and of course our booth party. The tekom premiere in Stuttgart was a full success," comments Niko Henschen, CEO of Across Systems GmbH.

Meetings of the Across Advisory Boards
On the eve of the tekom, the Across Corporate Advisory Board and the LSP Advisory Board held their second meeting this year. A special aspect was the joint discussion with all advisory members, which enabled a deeper understanding of the different perspectives. With their experience and user knowledge, the members of the advisory boards assist Across in the customer-oriented further development of the Across Language Server.

73  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Intershop supports Mister Spex’ international growth vision on: November 19, 2014, 03:57:38 PM
London, UK, 19th November 2014 – Intershop is enabling the international expansion vision for Mister Spex. The leading online optician’s new UK website – misterspex.co.uk – is the first in a series of European shop fronts to go live on Intershop 7, the leading omni-channel platform.

Moving up to Intershop 7 in the UK is the first step in the next European-wide expansion plan wave by German firm Mister Spex. With a turnover of €47 million in 2013 and more than one million customers Mister Spex is already Europe’s leading online optician.

The Berlin-based firm switched to Intershop after having outgrown its proprietary commerce platform, originally established in 2008. Mister Spex is now focusing on its vision for future expansion as it migrates its German, French, Spanish and Swedish-language online shops to Intershop’s powerful and flexible platform.

The online optician chose Intershop’s highly flexible, modular shop platform after looking at various competitors, attracted by Intershop’s ability to grow with Mister Spex’ international business plans.

Lars Schickner, Director Innovation Center at Intershop is quoted as saying: “Mister Spex is the latest high-profile online retailer to make a strategic decision to re-platform as an enabler for future business growth. With this step the optician avoids re-platforming again in a few years, since each transition is time consuming, complex and expensive. In choosing Intershop, Mister Spex made a visionary decision, selecting a commerce partner able to support its ambitious growth goals both today and into the future.”

As a successful online-driven multi-channel player, Mister Spex was searching for a single platform that would serve as a solid base for the entire European market - without further increasing future costs in updating and expanding the system to account for different time zones, languages, taxes and fulfilment requirements.

Factors that attracted Mister Spex to Intershop 7 included the flexibility provided by a highly-diversified range of deployment models, scalability and modularity. Intershop supported the Mister Spex team in ensuring a smooth migration, with full shop functionality maintained at all times during the process.
By completing the first phase, Mister Spex can now offer its UK customers more than 7000 different models of eyewear and extensive search functionality, as it focuses on providing customers with a very personal and user-friendly shopping appearance. At the back end, the company is increasing conversion rates by engaging in extensive live A/B testing and offering highly customized landing pages – which provide a solution to the challenge of maintaining a fast-loading shop front without being slowed down by the need to pre-cache extensive volumes of data.

Intershop was able to demonstrate to Mister Spex its proven track record in serving large customers with similar requirements, in both the B2B and B2C sector. Furthermore, Mister Spex is taking advantage of Intershop’s extensive capabilities in integrating third party systems, such as real-time communication with its ERP system, ensuring that extensive product data is always up to date and providing seamless access to an enhanced order management system.

74  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Macmillan Distribution goes live with new subscription business powered by Publi on: November 18, 2014, 08:44:37 PM
Oxford, UK, 18th November 2014 – Macmillan Distribution (MDL), the award-winning international book distributor, has gone live with its new subscription platform, running on Publishing Technology’s advance enterprise system.

MDL becomes the first Publishing Technology client in the UK to launch its service on the digitally-native Order to Cash module of advance, which effectively enables the company to break into the journal fulfilment market.

MDL can now offer both new and existing publisher customers an increasing number of subscription-based models for both digital and physical content, helping to provide their readers with a seamless user experience at the point of purchase. With its robust sales, marketing and ecommerce capabilities for serial content, advance Order to Cash will empower publishers working with MDL to respond swiftly to market demands, customise products and experiment with new business models, driven by comprehensive data analysis and reporting.

Legal publisher Hart Publishing, now part of Bloomsbury Academic, is the first of MDL’s clients to take full advantage of the subscription service and has already started processing renewals of its journal titles via the new system. Further MDL customers are expected to sign up in the coming months.

Matthew Hogg, Commercial Director, Macmillan Distribution (MDL) commented: “As our client and customers’ supply chains evolve and become progressively complex, we need to respond by implementing solutions to help them to continue to manage products, revenues and reporting more effectively. We chose to invest in Publishing Technology’s impressive advance system because it allows us to show our commitment to our clients, through the launch of a subscription service that truly meets their needs, while also providing us with the scope to continue to develop business opportunities in the future.”

Randy Petway, Executive Vice President, Global Product Strategy, Publishing Technology, said: “Investing in implementing new technologies like advance, which has been developed for the digital age, means that a major distributor like MDL can really drive its business forwards while serving its customers in the best possible way. The product offers a powerful set of tools to manage, package, sell and distribute content in innovative new ways that until now have been too challenging to administer. As a long-standing client of ours - using our Vista system for warehouse fulfilment for over 30 years - I’m delighted that MDL have become the first of our clients to successfully install the system in the UK, and I look forward to seeing how the new subscription service is received as it’s rolled out to their customers.”

75  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / The Shard to become real life ‘Dragon’s Den’ on: November 18, 2014, 07:39:39 PM
UK, 18th November 2014 – More than 20 of the UK’s most exciting technology start-ups are set to bid for a collective £30m of investment in front of a live audience of investors at The Shard this month.

The 22nd floor of the iconic London landmark will be turned into a real life Dragon’s Den as businesses providing technological solutions for everything from wrinkles to poor public transport in developing countries have just 10 minutes to pitch to the likes of Mercia Fund Management and Eden Ventures.

The event, Accelerating Growth, is organised by SETsquared, a business incubation programme run by a partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. 2014 marks its 11th year of the showcase and the support of leading intellectual property firm Mathys & Squire has enabled Accelerating Growth to be held in the iconic Shard building.

SETsquared businesses have raised some £60m in investment in the last 12 months, a 100 per cent increase on last year, and Accelerating Growth aims to boost that figure by putting start-ups face-to-face with angel investors, venture capitalists, high net worth individuals and self-certified sophisticated investors.

Among the businesses pitching for investment are:
• Fourth State Medicine – which has invented a wrinkle-busting hand-held plasma pen for the cosmetic and wider medical markets
• Crowd Connected – which has developed a platform that gathers data from a crowd’s smartphones to provide aggregated location insight to operators
• Inova Design Solutions – which has created a miniature wearable device that can monitor health and fitness performance and send the data wirelessly to smart phones and smart watches
• Ultrahaptics – which is the world’s leading touchless haptics company

Simon Bond, Innovation Director at SETsquared, said: “The fact that businesses within our incubator have doubled the amount of funding they have raised in the last year proves there is real appetite for investors to partner with high growth potential technology companies. This positive outlook has created a real buzz around our event and we are hoping to add significantly to the amount we have helped our companies raise at Accelerating Growth.”

Among the SETsquared companies to receive substantial investment in the last year is Brightpearl, which secured a $10m funding injection, led by new investor MMC Ventures, alongside participation from Quayle Munro and existing investors Eden Ventures and Notion Capital. The money has allowed the company to invest in its product and expand sales.

Of the companies that secured investment at last year’s 10th anniversary showcase was Torqbak, which received £150,000 from Mercia Fund Management for its Twitter business as a direct result of pitching at SETsquared’s investment showcase.

Over the last 12 years SETsquared has helped more than 1,000 businesses raise over £1bn in investment, figures that have contributed to it being named by the UBI as the top university business incubator in Europe and number two in the world.

ENDS

Press are invited to attend Accelerating Growth and, if organised in advance, can sit in on many of the investor pitches. Other news stories on the day will include:

• SETsquared unveiling new statistics on the economic impact of the partnership over the last 12 years
• The announcement of a new programme to help accelerate the commercialisation of research

About SETsquared:
SETsquared is a collaboration between the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey which partners in enterprise activities and collectively supports the growth and success of new business opportunities through spin-outs, licensing, incubation and education. The partnership also works with industry through research collaboration and consultancy.

In the last 11 years SETsquared has developed over 1,000 high tech start-ups that have generated some £1bn in investment. It is named by the UBI as the joint best university incubator in Europe and 4th best globally.

77  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / koffer-direkt.de heads off for new horizons with Intershop on: November 12, 2014, 04:15:11 PM
Jena, Germany, 12th November 2014 – koffer-direkt.de GmbH & Co.KG, the leading online shop for every type of travel luggage, has become Intershop’s newest client. The company is switching from Oxid eSales to Jena-based Intershop, the leading independent provider of omni-channel commerce solutions. Intershop 7 was chosen because it satisfies a need for a powerful and highly scalable platform. The decision to use Intershop puts koffer-direkt.de on an early course for profitable further growth. The highly modular solution is designed to make integrating an existing system landscape through standardized interfaces easy and simple, and affords ample flexibility for future links to third-party systems—something that is of vital importance for a company that handles its entire order fulfilment process in-house.

As a company that started out with traditional in-store sales, koffer-direkt.de attaches great importance to knowing exactly who its customers are and what they want. koffer-direkt.de therefore conducts targeted campaigns with the aid of precise analyses of key figures and exceptionally high-quality product photographs produced by its own in-house photographic studio. Once Intershop 7 has been implemented, its integrated content management system will provide the company with even better campaign management resources to support these activities. Because it combines a uniquely wide range of use models that make migrating the shop from one model up to the next one an economical process with minimal risk, Intershop is a secure long-term choice for the international expansion the company seeks. Says Dennis Heidtmann, a partner in koffer-direkt.de, “If we are to build on our position as the market leader, we have to have a shop that will stand the test of time. We therefore decided to discard our existing platform and switch to Intershop 7. Intershop not only meets our complex growth and stability requirements, it also offers us all the options an internationally-oriented company looks for.

Adds Volker John, Intershop’s Vice President of Sales for Germany, Austria and Switzerland, “koffer-direkt.de made the switch to Intershop after a thorough review of the providers in the market. It chose Intershop because of Intershop’s flexible and highly modular use model, which provides the ideal basis for the company’s growth plans. It is a successful company that started out with an in-house solution and ultimately came to us after working with one of our competitors along the way. And so it knows from experience that a change of platforms is fraught with complexity and risks. The fact that Intershop was chosen shows how attractive our product portfolio is to companies of all sizes.”

78  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Ark Data Centres Supports its Growing Business with Srategic Senior-Level Appoin on: November 11, 2014, 04:32:24 PM
Farnborough, UK, 11th November 2014 - In recent months, Ark Data Centres, who pioneer the design, construction and operation of the UK's most efficient data centres, has won a number of both substantial and smaller - but by no means any less significant – new client deals. With a constantly swelling client community and pipeline, the Company has made the next evolution in how it operates to ensure that it continues to thrive and remain true to its strategic intent.

Steve Webb has been appointed Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Ark Data Centres, to head up the newly created Office of the CIO. Webb joined the Company as its Chief Operating Officer (COO) in 2008 and has, to date, been responsible for end to end operations from design and build through to live services to service delivery.

“I can think of no better candidate,” commented Huw Owen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ark Data Centres. “Steve has a vast understanding of Ark’s offering, the market and is equipped with exactly the level of commercial acumen that we require for him to shape and drive this new function. This is truly a critical next step in Ark’s evolution.”

Reporting to Webb in the Office of the CIO are Pip Squire, Director of Design, and Jason Liggins, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), whose combined array of experience and ability will greatly enhance Ark Data Centres’ understanding and impact on the market and its consequent alignment to ensure continued best effect..

Replacing Webb in the role of COO is Douglas Aikman who has joined Ark Data Centres from HP where his last assignment was as Account Delivery Executive for Royal Dutch Shell, in charge of delivering infrastructure operations across the globe. Being new to the Company, Aikman brings a wealth of experience which includes a fresh perspective, enabling him to apply his significant, relevant knowledge and ability to challenge Ark Data Centres to take its game to the next level.

“Importantly,” continued Owen, “as a proven leader in both his military and business careers, Doug will doubtless engage with and lead the Ark operational team and its partners with real vigour.”

Another role created to support the strategic growth plan of the Company is that of Head of Security to which Mark Brown has been appointed. A new member of the Ark Data Centre team, Brown is another hugely experienced operator who has held global security and risk roles both within the RAF and across private multinational companies, the most recent being with TOR International in the Middle East.

About Ark Data Centres:
Ark Data Centres designs, constructs and operates the UK's most efficient data centres. It has pioneered the use of free air-cooling, a unique monitoring system, real time dynamic cooling and load matching technology that gives its clients the lowest TCO along with the greatest operational flexibility. Dedicated to innovation, Ark’s modular, state-of-the-art sites in Hampshire and Wiltshire will be the largest in Europe and were the first to contractually guarantee power usage efficiency (PUE) for clients.

An independent company that prides itself on being easy to do business with, Ark Data Centres boasts the lowest total cost of ownership in the world and has saved both millions of pounds and millions of tonnes of carbon for organisations in the defence, telecommunications, government and financial services sectors. Capable of operating at the highest levels of security, Ark’s incremental approach to building out its data centre campuses means it is constantly innovating, building to the latest operational requirements of its clients and minimising the operational legacy. Through an optimised logistics support chain it has and will continue to deliver operational data centres in just 12 weeks.

79  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / SETsquared companies double investment raised in one year on: November 06, 2014, 03:57:31 PM
UK, 6th November 2014 – SETsquared, Europe’s number one university business incubator, has seen the amount of investment raised by its start-ups double in the last year.

Businesses within the SETsquared incubation programme have raised £60m in investment in the last 12 months, a substantial increase on 2013.

The programme’s innovation director, Simon Bond, said the explosion in investment raised could mark evidence of a return in confidence for financers.

The announcement was made today (November 5) at Innovate UK, the UK’s largest multi-sector conference and exhibition for entrepreneurs, innovators, exporters, entrepreneurs and investors.

The investment raised by SETsquared companies has come through a mixture of angel investors, venture capitalists and government grants.

Among the SETsquared companies to receive substantial investment in the last year was Crowdcube, an online crowdfunding platform supported by SETsquared’s centre at the University of Exeter.

In July it secured a £3.8m investment from venture capital firm Balderton Capital and, just a week later, raised a further £1.2 million in just 16 minutes through its own crowdfunding site.

SETsquared leaders are anticipating another increase in funding for its companies next year as they are stepping up the investment readiness training and access to investors that they provide to businesses. On November 26 the partnership is holding an event at The Shard that will see 21 companies pitch live to an audience of investors for some £30m of funding.

Simon Bond added: “The companies we support already have dynamic and innovative technologies that have the potential to generate millions and, in some cases, change the world. What these latest figures show is the importance of our work to nurture them and give them access to investment so they can grow and reach their full potential.”

SETsquared, a partnership of the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey, currently supports over 300 high-tech, high-growth potential start-ups. Around 15 per cent of those companies are spin-outs from the universities and the rest are businesses from the surrounding areas.

It is a sponsor of Innovate UK and attended today alongside a number of its incubated companies, including Seab Energy, iGeolise, Travel AI and Kemuri.

80  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Help for Decision Makers: Screen Translation Processes with the Across Data Cube on: November 05, 2014, 04:41:35 PM
Karlsbad, Germany, 5th November 2014 – With the latest version of its translation management system, Across Systems GmbH features a special component for decision makers on the basis of business intelligence (BI) concepts. The Across Data Cube enables the examination of corporate translation processes and creation of individual reports and indicators directly from within Microsoft Excel.

At defined intervals, a data model is created from the data collected in the translation process (e.g. costs, volumes, supplier structures, quality measurements, flow times, and company-specific information). The data are captured and processed to a form that can be analyzed. The decision maker can examine this information in various ways, allocate the workload and costs, and subsequently address optimization issues. On the basis of the various values, dimensions, and filters, the data can be flexibly analyzed according to the specific needs. For example, translation costs over time or the growth of the translation volume of a certain language can be analyzed and displayed in charts. The Across Data Cube helps to make forecasts on the basis of facts and trends, e.g. for the purpose of building up resources in due time based on the volume development of a target language.

Further information on the Across Data Cube is available at www.across.net or in a personal meeting at the Across booth 2/B06 at the tekom annual conference.

81  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / CCS small cell microwave backhaul solution nets Telecoms.com Awards nomination on: November 04, 2014, 05:20:45 PM
Cambridge, UK, 4th November 2014 - CCS (Cambridge Communication Systems Limited), creator of the world’s first self-organising small cell microwave backhaul system for mobile networks, today announces that it has been shortlisted for a hotly-contested Telecoms.com award in the “Pushing The Mobile Limits” category.

This award is for companies that have made a “significant, ground-breaking technological achievement” and recognises those that have “pushed the boundaries of network functionality, affording a glimpse of future mass market improvements”.

The Telecoms.com Awards are selected by an independent panel of judges with many decades of industry experience, together with specialist judges who lent their insights for particular categories. The award nominees and winners will be celebrated at a special awards dinner in London on Thursday 4th December, hosted by comedian Lucy Porter.

The Telecoms.com shortlisting adds to CCS’ impressive and growing list of industry plaudits this year, including nominations for the Fierce Innovation Awards, IET Innovation Awards, World Communication Awards, Leading Lights Awards, and overall wins in the Small Cell Forum Industry Awards and Cambridge News Top Innovations 2014 Awards.

CCS’ pioneering self-organising small cell backhaul system has been winning the attention of awards judges worldwide as the first backhaul solution that makes outdoor small cells truly viable. The small outdoor devices provide a resilient network of high capacity and low latency, as well as being easily installed in less than fifteen minutes. In October, CCS’ expanded its first commercial deployment with China Mobile – the world’s largest mobile operator – with a further installation in its Fujian Mobile branch.

Commenting on CCS’ Telecoms.com shortlisting, CEO and Co-Founder Steve Greaves said: “It’s a real pleasure to be recognised by the Telecoms.com panel this year and “Pushing The Mobile Limits” is what our solution is all about”. By extending the same self-organising principles that exist in small cell technologies to backhaul, we have delivered the only small cell backhaul solution that meets all the key requirements for operators – truly pushing the limits of what’s possible to achieve in outdoor small cell deployment.”
