Buddhism was imported from Korea and China in the 7th century. Shinto shrines tend to solemn and formal. And you may see some displays of the Japanese art of flower arranging. Shinto means the way of the gods and this religion honors your ancestors and nature.

The Buddhist temples can be like a carnival. After the gate there is a narrow street where vendors sell food and souvenirs. A Buddhist temple usually includes a large gate at it entrance, a main hall and often a pagoda. There are also buildings where scriptures are stored and a lecture hall. These religions help the Japanese through life, birth, marriage and to prepare for death.

While few Japanese are Christians, many Japanese get married in a chapel like setting and they have many of the elements of a western wedding, such as the reception, but they also blend in their own culture. The bride and groom are from Okinawa and Osaka and after the wedding ceremony they are playing traditional music and dances.

Kamakura, which is located near Tokyo, was where the first shogun, ruled Japan. Nikko has a shrine with wood carvings of monkeys, which depict the famous, hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. It also has a stunning gate inside which was beautifully carved with dragons, lions and children.

Kyoto is an elegant land of geisha and has over 1,000 temples and shrines and including the gold and silver pavilions, which have ponds flowers, rock gardens plants and trees. One was built for a patron of the arts who spent a great deal of time perfecting the tea ceremony and hosting moon gazing parties.

There are 12 surviving castles from Japan's feudal era and one of them was featured in a James Bond movie -You Only Live Twice.

Nagano has great skiing and was the site of the 1998 Winter Olympics - it has Japans largest ski resort. You can see many baseball games, Japan's most popular sport. The crowds chant for their favorite team, and young players hope to join the major leagues.
