The Magic of SEO Competitions
by: Andrew Hansen
Currently online there is a competition being run amongst internet marketers to see who can get their page to rank number one for the search term “v7ndotcom elursrebmem”. This is a very intelligent marketing tactic from the website v7n.com, the creators of the competition. Reportedly the site from where the competition originates has experienced a doubling in traffic and forum members in the 2 short months the competition has been running.
These competitions are great to be a part of, they bring lots of previously not known people together. Many long lasting personal and business relationships are formed in these competitions.
Not only that but it is a great way for marketers to study the complicated inner workings of the search engine algorithms. People can intimately test their strategies against those of their competitions and can take note of exactly what makes the differences in a ranking change of 1 spot.
People learn a lot from this about each of the major search engines.
It’s also a funny time when a competition like this is taking place. There is absolute madness. No friends or wives can understand, when they see you and your friends jumping up and down in glee when your site raises one spot in the competition.
They cannot understand that first thing in the morning upon waking, the first thing you do when returning home from dinner, during all television commericals, all you ever want to do is go and check your rankings in the competition!
And this goes on for 3 months!
This is one of the strange new phenomenons that appear in the age of the internet.
I’m happy with how our site is ranked so far..
Especially out of close to 3 million pages indexed so far.
The amount of pages indexed in
http://www.google.com has far exceeded every bodies expectations.
The last competition I was in for the search term nigritude ultramarine, where after 3 months there were just 600,000 pages indexed in Google. This new competition reached close to three million in 3 weeks. A totally amazing response from webmasters all over the world.
It’s interesting to see the amount of backlinks showing up to this page from the different search engines too.
Though that was after only 3 weeks. But perhaps the first lesson learnt was, interestingly that msn is revealing the backlinks faster than the other search engines.
I trust that there will be many more thought provoking observations like this before the competition has ended.
