RealVNC’s VNC® Automotive evaluated against the Car Connectivity Consortium’s certification requirements

24th January 2013: RealVNC, the global provider of VNC® remote access technology, today announced its solution VNC Automotive is a MirrorLink Certified™ product, following an extensive evaluation against the certification requirements outlined by the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC).

VNC Automotive allows access and control of a mobile device from a vehicle head unit or infotainment system. This gives drivers access to all approved smartphone content, such as navigation applications, music libraries and internet radio stations, whilst on the fmove. The mobile device can be directly controlled from the infotainment system touch screen, vehicle bezel keys, steering wheel switches and by voice command, ensuring all content can be accessed safely.

The CCC is an international Consortium, made up of some of the world’s leading companies in the automotive, mobile communications and consumer electronics industry, working to develop a set of global standards for smartphone to vehicle connectivity. As a Core Member of the CCC, RealVNC works closely with the Consortium to develop and promote MirrorLink, a solution utilizing VNC technology, as a common connectivity protocol for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) and smartphone integration.

The CCC certification process included MirrorLink conformance and interoperability testing to ensure VNC Automotive meets with the CCC’s commitment to provide users with a safe and seamless experience of smartphone use in vehicles. The certification allows RealVNC’s partners to be guaranteed compatibility with MirrorLink specifications whilst being safe in the knowledge they are meeting the criteria set by the CCC.

“We are delighted VNC Automotive is MirrorLink Certified and remain committed to working closely with the CCC to drive the integration of mobile and vehicle,” says Tom Blackie, Vice President Mobile at RealVNC. “Our solution continues to grow in adoption and we are excited to be working with some of the world’s leading automotive manufacturers and equipment suppliers to bring users the best driving experience possible. Many of the MirrorLink Certified products already on the market are using the RealVNC technology.”

As well as being compliant with the MirrorLink specification, VNC Automotive also supports Apple’s iPod Out, a system that allows an iPhone 3G/3GS/4 or iPod Touch to display the video interface on an in-vehicle head unit.
