PoINT Storage Manager 4.0 with DMS-/ECM-functionality
« Posted: December 21, 2012, 07:04:04 PM »

Siegen, Germany - December 21st, 2012. PoINT Software & Systems GmbH has extended their established PoINT Storage Manager (PSM) by various functionalities and supports within the new version even more storage systems for implementing a Tiered Storage Architecture.
As a highlight the new PSM version provides in addition to the “Compliant Mode”, a “Read/Write Mode”. By this function users can modify, rename and move archived files and directories in the primary storage. These files are still saved with their original content in the archive storage and modifications are archived in a new data file version. Thus companies can fulfill their archiving compliances by using PSM 4.0 without introducing expensive and complex DMS-/ECM-systems. The new version is expected to be available in February 2013.
Additional innovations of PoINT Storage Manager are e.g. the seamless connection from EMC Celerra and VNX systems in the primary storage section for migrating and archiving inactive data. Via the established FileMover interface, the PoINT EMC FileMover agent, inactive data - and these are normally up to 80% of the total data volume – are migrated to more cost-effective secondary storage. The migrated data are replaced by so-called “Stubs”. Thereby a standardized data access (“Single Path Access”) via the file system still remains for users and applications.
Furthermore the data system functionality of the supported primary storage has been significantly extended – this is also effective for the now announced systems EMC Celerra/VNX as for the Windows NTFS-based Filer/NAS, NetApp FAS.
The optimal usage of storage capacity by PoINT Storage Manager
Via a three Tiered Storage Architecture, as offered by PoINT Storage Manager, companies can optimally use their existing storage capacity, without affecting running operations. PoINT Storage Manager is a software solution implementing a Tiered Storage Architecture by a policy-based data management with automated and transparent data migration and archiving as well as migration between different tiers. The used expensive primary storage of the Performance Tier became relieved as inactive data - and these are normally up to 80% of the total data volume – are migrated to more cost-effective secondary storage of the Capacity or Archive Tier. Companies and software producers have recognized this benefit and implement the archiving functionality by a dedicated Tiered Storage Solution like PoINT Storage Manager. It proceeds via the standardized Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol completely transparent. Special authentication and encryption functionalities of PoINT Storage Manager additionally protect against unauthorized access. The replication on further storage media protects the data additionally. Furthermore users benefit from the independence from storage manufacturers. A possible archive storage migration is carried out background and thus has no impact on the performance of the IT environment. Besides no modifications on the applications are necessary.
