Radisys MPX-12000 Helps Mobile Operators generate new revenues from growing volume of mobile video traffic

HILLSBORO, OR, US – February 2012 – Radisys® Corporation (NASDAQ: RSYS), a leading provider of embedded wireless infrastructure solutions, today announced the MPX-12000, a broadband Multimedia Resource Function (MRF) for large LTE IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network deployments and the newest addition to the Radisys MRF product family. The MPX-12000, developed on Radisys 40G ATCA open platform technologies, is specifically designed to provide mobile and IMS network operators the capacities, capabilities and reliability essential for monetizing real-time wireless broadband communications, including mobile video and voice over LTE (VoLTE).

Mobile video and data demand is predicted to increase 26-fold between 2010 and 20151[1]

Mobile video traffic could reach 66 percent of all mobile data traffic by 2015

With this explosion in mobile video traffic, mobile operators are faced with a harsh truth -when it comes to lucrative service revenues, the primary beneficiaries of this shift to mobile video are the content providers, offering over-the-top (OTT) services across the mobile operators’ data networks. Mobile operators need to monetize this mobile video growth opportunity by offering compelling, differentiated and personalized real-time audio and video mobile services that will increase average revenue per user (ARPU).

An IMS network with MPX-12000 support enables operators to monetize media flows, closing the widening gap between flat revenues and increasing CAPEX expenditures. For example, operators can capitalize on mobile traffic growth by leveraging this IMS/MRF network strategy to migrate traditional, mobile audio value-added services (VAS) to video VAS equivalents - videomail, interactive voice and video response (IVVR), video ringback tones (RBT), video streaming and video advertising. The Radisys MPX-12000 with broadband MRF support is developed specifically to achieve operators’ growth objectives and meet the mobile video service processing needs in a 4G or LTE mobile network.

“We are continuing to witness the convergence of screens and the real-time evolution of the network from voice traffic to video to two-way interactive video as mobile pipes get fatter,” said Sue Rudd, Director Service Provider Analysis, Strategy Analytics. “Radisys’ release of its MPX-12000 comes at the perfect time for operators. With its MRF media processing capacities, the MPX-12000 will enable mobile operators to offer and monetize personalized multimedia services to their LTE mobile subscribers.”

The MPX-12000 complements existing Radisys IP media server solutions and provides operators with significant capacity increases to meet the anticipated growth of mobile and video services. This new Radisys MPX-12000 leverages the power and open platform benefits of the latest Radisys 40G ATCA products, to support carrier-class capacities and capabilities for mobile multimedia VAS and conferencing applications, mobile broadband video, mobile high-definition (HD) audio and scalable IP-to-IP transcoding.

“Mavenir has already integrated the Radisys CMS-9000 media server with our Mavenir mOne Convergence Platform for one of our LTE operator deployments, yet we continue to see growing volumes of traffic in the network, particularly mobile video traffic,” said Terry McCabe, CTO, Mavenir Systems. “A product like the MPX-12000 - with a design objective to increase MRF media processing capacities for mobile video services - offers an enticing MRF product evolution for LTE operators.”

“The MPX-12000 is the first product to integrate Radisys’ expertise and leadership in IP media processing technology with our high-performance ATCA open telecommunication platforms,” said David Smith, vice president and general manager, media server business unit, Radisys. “This milestone moves our leadership and history of media processing innovation to the next level.”

About the MPX-12000
Supporting up to 60,000 media processing ports in a single shelf - three-times the capacity of Radisys’ existing CMS-9000 - the MPX-12000 offers mobile operators and their application partners increased port density, reducing space and network complexity. Key features of the MPX-12000 also include:

Supports common video codec standards including H.264 HD video, H.263 and MPEG-4 mobile video, allowing operators to offer scalable video VAS applications and extend HD video conferencing from enterprise locations to remote mobile participants

Support for VoLTE, including Adaptive Multi-Rate Wideband (AMR-WB) with advanced media conditioning features

Industry-leading MRF densities for delivering real-time audio and video services to rich media devices, with automatic transcoding and transrating between diverse codec and picture size formats

Reliable, open platform architecture based on Radisys market-leading 40G ATCA products

Standards-based interfaces for rapid deployment and integration

Backward compatibility with same control, media and management interfaces as

Radisys’ existing media server products allows current customer deployments to scale or monetize new mobile video services

Meet the MPX-12000 at Mobile World Congress
Radisys will be showcasing the new MPX-12000 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Feb. 27-March 1 in Hall 1, Booth #1F01 and will be hosting meetings throughout the show in Suite 1 1HS28. Contact Radisys at [email protected] to schedule a meeting with the company’s mobile network experts.
