Co-creator of the MIME email standard to spearhead innovation drive
21 June 2010 – London: Mimecast®, a unified email management company offering cloud-based email security, continuity, policy control and archiving, has today announced the appointment of Dr. Nathaniel S. Borenstein as the company’s Chief Scientist. Dr. Borenstein is the co-creator of the Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) email standard and developer of the Andrew Mail System, metamail software and the Safe-Tcl programming language. At Mimecast, he will be responsible for driving the company’s product development and technological innovation, alongside Mimecast CTO and co-founder, Neil Murray.
Previously, Dr. Borenstein worked as an IBM Distinguished Engineer, responsible for research and standards strategy for the Lotus brand, and as a faculty member at the University of Michigan and Carnegie-Mellon University. He also founded two successful Internet cloud service start-ups; First Virtual Holdings, founded in 1994, was the first Internet payment system and was ultimately acquired by Doubleclick: and NetPOS (
http://www.netpos.com), the first Internet-centric point-of-sale system, was founded in 2000.
“I’ve spent my entire career in the email and collaboration industries and I think there are old problems in these sectors that can finally be solved with cloud computing,” said Borenstein, Chief Scientist at Mimecast. “For as long as there have been computers, IT architectural trends have repeatedly oscillated between centralised and distributed computing. It’s about reconciling the pain of trying to work with an invisible remote computer against the headache of being your own system administrator. Now that cheap small devices are powerful enough, and bandwidth is plentiful enough, cloud computing can solve these problems by bringing together the benefits of both centralised and distributed computing. Mimecast is fast emerging as a leading proponent of the idea of the cloud operating in harness with existing IT infrastructures, and I look forward to helping the company exploit the opportunity it has created for itself over the coming years.”
Peter Bauer, co-founder and CEO of Mimecast, continued, “Innovation has always been a crucial element in Mimecast’s DNA and we are therefore delighted to have someone of Nathaniel’s stature on board. To have such a renowned industry figure joining the team is a real testament to the quality of our technology and a clear demonstration of the emphasis we are placing on its continued development.”
