App for mobile voice encryption enters NIAP Common Criteria security evaluation process
Vienna, VA – August 5th, 2013: Cellcrypt, a leading provider of encrypted voice calling and messaging for smartphones and tablets, today announced that its Cellcrypt Mobile for Secret™ product is officially in evaluation with the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP) Common Criteria Testing Laboratory (CCTL), Cygnacom Solutions, Inc.. This version of the company’s popular Cellcrypt Mobile software application is designed for operation at the U.S. Secret and Top Secret classification levels. As of this release, Cellcrypt’s is the first and only solution under evaluation against the NIAP Mobility Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) protection profile.
Historically, secure communications have operated over Circuit Switched Data (CSD) networks. However, network operators are rapidly deprecating CSD networks worldwide. Thousands of purpose-built secure mobile devices in the field will need to be replaced. Cellcrypt Mobile for Secret provides an easy to use, standards-based encrypted VoIP application for commercially available off-the-shelf (COTS) smartphones. The all-software solution communicates using SIP and SRTP, supports a wide range of standard codecs, and can also use Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to facilitate user authentication. Because Cellcrypt Mobile can be rapidly deployed, and may be managed by any of the popular Mobile Device Management systems, organizations and agencies could have a secure CSD replacement solution running on a commercial smartphone in record time.
“Cellcrypt continues to lead the industry for certified mobility solutions,” said Dr. Paul Galwas, CTO of Cellcrypt. “Being first in evaluation gives Cellcrypt a head start in putting a classified-level mobile VoIP products into the hands of users who await an approved solution.”
NIAP is a joint partnership established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the National Security Agency (NSA) to evaluate COTS IA and IA-enabled IT product conformance to international standards designed to satisfy the security testing needs of both information technology consumers and producers. The NIAP Protection Profiles were created for technologies of high priority for U.S. Government customers.
“Cellcrypt is dedicated to providing solutions that enable users at all security levels to communicate securely on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) smartphones,” said David Rivington, CEO of Cellcrypt. “The clock is ticking for CSD-based solutions, and Federal Defense and Civilian Agencies need to deploy alternatives. With successful completion of the NIAP evaluation, Cellcrypt will be an accredited answer to that need."
Upon successful completion of the testing, Cellcrypt Mobile for Secret will be considered to have met the Common Criteria guidelines set by the NIAP VoIP Application Protection Profile “Security Requirements for Voice over IP Application”, released on January 28, 2013. These criteria are designed to validate VoIP as an integrated component of the NIAP Mobility Capability architecture.
