Broadband Forum and TNO team up for Global DSL Seminar 2013
« Posted: June 17, 2013, 06:14:14 PM »

Key trends in DSL and FTTX to be discussed at world’s leading DSL event

Scheveningen, The Netherlands, 17 June 2013 – TNO and Broadband Forum have teamed up for the fourth consecutive year to create a world-class seminar on the future of DSL. The event focuses on optimizing DSL technology and implementation, as well as looks at the global regulatory and policy impacts on deployment. It will also spotlight the latest innovation in this enduring technology that plays such a major part in bringing broadband to the masses.

The Broadband Forum is co-hosting the event, with President of the Broadband Forum, Kevin Foster, leading the two innovation days and giving an update of the Forum’s super-fast broadband work, including a progress report on G.vector and FTTdp/G.Fast initiatives.

Commenting on the event, Kevin Foster said: “DSL continues to be the cornerstone of broadband service delivery and we are happy to support this important event. TNO’s DSL Seminar facilitates the debate around new and innovative technologies that allow telecom operators and service providers to gain a fresh perspective towards stretching their existing assets.”

TNO DSL seminar attendees are able to take part in interactive discussions on DSL developments and the event attracts an increasingly global audience. Speakers and sponsors come from a wide variety of backgrounds and geographies, representing regulators, operators, manufacturers, and research establishments from Europe, Asia and the Americas.

The agenda includes a wide range of regulatory discussions, and technology topics that look at copper innovation including FTTdp/G.fast, which allows hybrid copper/fibre to deliver Gigabit speeds to the home without the need for laying new cabling, and 4GBB (fourth generation broadband services) that allows the increasing use of fibre to enable the transporting of hundreds of Mb/s ever closer to end-users. The 4GBB debate is centring around the ability to combine fibre and copper, with existing telephony wiring bridging the last 20m-200m, saving on installation costs and time. This allows DSL to provide the final link that makes FTTH viable. Hybrid Fibre copper connectivity with G.fast may well be the more attractive proposition from a business point of view.

Teun van der Veen of TNO commented: “We are delighted with the final line-up of speakers and look forward to welcoming Kevin Foster from the Broadband Forum, whose insights into the work of the Forum and its members will be invaluable to our participants.”
