Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust Implements Ascribe’s Business Intelligence Solution
Bolton - 17 May 2011 - Ascribe is delighted to announce the successful Go-Live at Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (BSMHFT) of a comprehensive Business Intelligence (BI) solution. This BI solution will enable the Trust to collate raw data from a broad range of sources and provide information that can be used to improve and develop clinical and managerial services. The Trust provides mental health care to those people living in Birmingham and Solihull who are experiencing mental health problems. They serve a culturally and socially-diverse population of 1.2 million spread over 172 square miles, and have an income of over £200 million, making them one of the largest mental health Foundation Trusts in the country.
BSMHFT already had Ascribe's Community Care & Mental Health system (ePEX) and were feeding data into a central point, however they wanted to modernise, develop and add more data into this platform and sought help to do this in a structured way. Like all Mental Health Trusts they had some compelling reasons for wanting to do this quickly, using best in class methods, tools and techniques and chose Ascribe Consulting to assist them. Using a combination of solution accelerators and consulting services the results are now making a real difference to the way the organisation works.
Working hand-in-hand the internal information team and Ascribe's consultants have delivered a comprehensive solution comprising an Executive Team Reporting Suite (including performance scorecards, targets, RAG ratings and trends), Dashboards for standard analyses (e.g. Referrals, Spells, Community Care follow ups, delayed transfers of care), KPI dashboards and a volume of business critical exception reports, Admitted Patient Care and Out-Patient Attendances, CDS and other statutory returns.
Additionally, using the 2010 generation of Microsoft products, the team are planning to use innovative software to perform "In Memory" Business Intelligence using Excel 2010 in particular.
The value of this has not gone unrecognised within the Trust. James Longmore, IT Director says:
"Working in partnership with Ascribe Consulting has enabled Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust to begin a transformation in the way that we manage and provide business intelligence. We have established a foundation for growth in our delivery of information based upon Microsoft technologies that will enable us to move forward and target information delivery to specific groups of staff. Managers and clinicians across the Trust are now able to base their decisions on more timely information, that can be collated from a wider range of sources.
In the past, we have evaluated services on the basis of standard operational reports. By using the data warehouse and reporting tools, built in partnership with Ascribe Consulting, we can now incorporate information from other sources, such as Patient Feedback scores, Staffing information and Serious Incident reports. Combining all this data will enable us to be able to create a deeper understanding of our clinical services and accurately assess where improvements can be made to improve patient care.
The improved sophistication of analysis & display of information means that spread sheets are being replaced with more a relevant insight into the clinical services that we offer."
Ascribe's newly appointed Divisional Head of Business Intelligence, Paul Henderson, adds:
"This solution is indeed transforming the way James' team provide information to front-line clinicians and also therefore to the speed and quality of response to the many difficult issues they face as they design and deliver services. The consolidation of records from clinical systems, the process of costing the activity, the marrying up of this data to HR records relating to team capacity and the integration of quality and safety data sets can now take place overnight. In a window of a couple of hours, the entire caseload is processed and delivered out via a series of targeted dashboards. This process would previously have taken much longer to achieve. BSMHFT manage a large volume of crisis situations provide support to many people in crisis every day and we are delighted to be able to use the immense processing, analytical and BI capabilities of the Microsoft stack to drive real benefits for them and the population they serve. The solution demonstrates our commitment to helping Mental Health organisations, in particular, to meet their need to provide high quality services, efficiently and cost-effectively in an environment with unique business and clinical challenges."
