OK lets start at the beginning. I'd built my first website and applied for AdSense. I didn't hear anything for three weeks so I asked them if I could have an update via the Google website. Within 48 hours they sent the following reply.

Hello Paul Middleton,

Your AdSense account was found to be related to an account previously disabled for invalid click activity and we have therefore disabled your account. Publishers disabled for invalid click activity are not allowed further participation in AdSense and do not receive any further payment. The earnings on your account will be properly returned to the affected advertisers.

As outlined in our programme Terms and Conditions, Google reserves the right to terminate any publisher's participation at any time.

Well I can assure you I was surprised and a bit upset. I'd never had an AdSense account in my life so how could my account be related to anything let alone an account previously disabled for invalid click activity!

I was at a loss. What could I do? I knew I was innocent but Google obviously thought otherwise. Google don't provide a phone support line so I had no one to ask.

I trawled the AdSense forums for answers and various theories were given some seemed a bit far-fetched but one stuck a chord. ?Possibly the previous owner of your domain was guilty of click fraud and now your domain is blacklisted'. This made some sense as I'd only purchased the domain a few weeks earlier. This had to be it.

I then thought of a reply that would go some way to proving my innocence and ended up sending the following.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reply.

I have never had an active AdSense account so it can not have been me that had the 'invalid click activity'.

My only thought is that a previous owner of the domain makingonlinemoney.com had their account disabled for this??

Please see the whois data below which shows that I have only owned the domain since May this year. The domain was available and I have no idea who owned it before me. I can get godaddy.com to confirm this if required.

I am keen to try the AdSense programme and can assure you I will fully respect your Terms and Conditions and programme policies if accepted onto your scheme.

I would ask therefore that you enable the account if my site meets your criteria.

So what is my advice to people who get banned from AdSense incorrectly?

I have four points of advice for anyone unfortunate enough to be in the same position as me.

1. Be patient. ? AdSense is constantly growing in terms of participants and the AdSense team gets thousands of requests a day regarding their scheme. Don't be to upset if you don't hear back from them in 48 hours. If a week has passed since your communication resend.

2. Be polite! ? Quite often I hear of people banned from AdSense who go in with all guns blazing. I can understand that people are angry and frustrated by being accused of something they didn't do but remember you're dealing with human beings. Human beings don't react positively to being ordered to do something or worse verbally abused. To increase your chances of a positive outcome be firm but polite at all times.

3. Provide evidence to back up your innocence. ? If possible include evidence to help prove your innocence. I included my ?whois' data for my domain to prove I had only owned the domain a few weeks. I also offered to provide any further information they required.

4. Never give up! If you're innocent don't give up. If after emailing them several times using the above techniques you don't get anywhere find the details of Google's head office for your area (use Google!) give them a call and ask to speak to the AdSense team. Write letters offer to meet them in person.

If you've been banned from AdSense and it was your fault the above technique won't work. There is however a common sense of getting back in to the scheme that has worked in the past for people caught cheating. That's another article though.

Get listed in directories such as DMOZ and Yahoo, avoid link farms and FFAs.
 
Avoid using meta redirect to redirect users to other pages.
 
Avoid excessive cross-linking to sites hosted on the same IP range (C class).
 
DO NOT copy your content. Not only does this violate copyright laws, search engines penalise you.
 
Search engines find it difficult to get relivant text from Flash if any at all, avoid contructing your page with flash, unless its for presentational purposes.
 
Search engines don't follow links in forms, image mapping, javascript links, frames, very well, if not, not at all.
 
Avoid putting your email address in text form on a page, as this will appear in search engines and generate unwanted emails
 
Avoid any "black hat" SEO methods, they don't work in the long run, stick at the real methods and you'll get far better results than risk your site getting banned.
 
Use correct HTML markup where possible, although this doesn't make much of a difference to the search engines, it will help you avoid other problems.
 
Don't use gateway pages or intro pages, they are useless and tend to disappear from search engines, not only that but the main page gets pushed down. -- This is also bad for usability as visitors aren't interested in your gateway, just your website.
 
Try and get as many backlinks from as many relivant websites as possible. Avoid bad sites. -- Anchor text on your links is important here, make sure you use a relivant keyword.
 
Try and get people to stay on your site, avoid annoying the user and provide them with reasons to stick around.
 
Suggest the user bookmarks your page or create pages that would be bookmark worthy.
 
Use a stable web server, there is nothing worse than having your site down.

Be quick to pick up on the interviewer's comments and ask relevant questions.

6. Dress for success.
An interview is a performance with people playing different roles. Your role is successful job prospect. Play the part. Whether you're female or male, the conservative business suit is the recommended attire for any interview. If your business suit needs a pressing, send it to the dry cleaners. If you don't own a suit (you'd be surprised at the number of us who don't) go out and get one. It doesn't have to be an $800 designer suit, but it should be conservative black, blue or gray.

7. Get cut or coiffed.
You'll have 15 minutes to make a good impression. Treat yourself to a visit to the local hair stylist. You bet looks matter. They'll be plenty of time to show your talent once you land the job. For now, look like a success, feel like a success ? be a success.

8. Practice positive visualization.
Professional athletes do it. So do actors, yoga instructors and new age thinkers who sleep under makeshift pyramids to absorb that mystical energy. It's called positive visualization ? and it works. It really does. In the days leading up to the interview, picture yourself sitting opposite the head of HR. Picture yourself relaxed, comfortable, at the top of your game. Play that clip over and over in your mind until it becomes so familiar, it actually becomes a part of your self-image. It simply can't be stated too often ? your confidence during an interview should be obvious and genuine.

9. Gather your materials.
The day before the interview, gather your materials and place them in a briefcase or attach?. Don't have one? Buy one or borrow one. It's another opportunity to project that professional image you wear so well. Bring extra copies of your resume in a manila envelop. Bring a pad and pencil to take notes. Bring a calculator (you never know). Bring your address book and copies of your business card. If you've been asked to provide additional information (school transcripts, e.g.) make sure you've got clean copies ready to hand over.

10. Sleep tight.
You've done it all. You've prepared yourself; you've built your confidence so you can look the interviewer straight in the eye. You are ready to rock ?n' roll! Okay, too psyched. You'll never get to sleep. The night before the interview, go to bed early. Have some warm milk, coco or herbal tea (stay away from the 3rd scotch). Relax. Set the alarm and sleep comfortably in the knowledge that you're as prepared as you'll ever be. No, not every interview will be a success. You won't get the job every time ? but don't take it personally. It's not about you; it's about the needs of the company. However, you can increase the chances of success by presenting a professional, prepared, and confident you to the interviewer. That's how you turn an interview into a job offer.

Why is overheating critical for a hard drive? The best way to understand how a hard disk works is to take a look inside the drive to see the internal work of each part in relation to overheating.

The Platters (magnetic physical media).
The platters (disks) carry the data. They are made from light aluminum or optical glass and ceramic, and are coated with a magnetic layer. When the drive heats up, the platters expand, changing their size and geometry. This destroys the magnetic layer on the surface where the data is stored, and creates defects and micro cracks. Physical damage of the surface leads to the appearance of ?bad? or unreadable sectors.

The Read/Write Heads.
The read/write heads of the hard disk are the interface between the platters on which the data is stored and the electronic components that make up the rest of the hard disk. The heads read from and write data on the platters. The read/write heads do not make contact with the media. This distinguishes hard disk drives from floppy disks, VCRs and tapes. Drive heads float over the surface of the disk without ever physically touching the platters. When the air inside heats up, the distance from the platters to the heads gets smaller, which increases the possibility of a head crash.

The Head Actuator.
The head actuator is a device attached to the heads, and is responsible for their moving around the platters. All modern drives have a voice coil actuator, which controls the position of the head over the correct cylinder. Since overheating is a cause of damage of any parts of the drive, the actuator is not an exception. Therefore, the head actuator failure directly affects the hard drive performance.

Controller Chip.
The circuit board(s) attached to the outside of the HDA (Head Drive Assembly) provides control of the movement of internal parts. Modern models have SM and VCM (Spindle Motor and Voice Coil Motor) controller chip soldered into the board. It is obvious that even a small temperature jump, for example, in the summer time, can lead to the burning of SM and VCM controller chip. Taking into account the importance of your data, you can imagine how unpleasant would be the consequences of such.

We explored the problems that can occur from an overheating hard drive. What is the optimum temperature that will prolong the drive life (and that of your data!) and how to maintain this temperature? Most used 7200 RPM hard drives generate more heat than 5400 RPM drives. Ideally, a hard drive should run under 40 C. If it runs under 50 C it is probably still acceptable. If it keeps working at 60C you will have a problem and if it still keeps working at 70 C you will have a REAL PROBLEM. As we can see, the excessive heat is not tolerated by a hard drive.

It is essential that the drive must be properly cooled and ventilated. Even if your system has embedded coolers and fans, additional coolers installed in a way of cooling the hard drive directly, will improve the drive's reliability. Just invest a small amount ($5-$35) in a cooling solution for your hard drive, and you will prevent the computer data recovery issue.
