You have all the motivation you need to write and publish articles online. You want visitors to your website, you want more clients and you want to generate more business.
But for some reason, you can't seem to produce anything but garbage. Every time you attempt to write an article, you start with a good idea and maybe the first couple of sentences, but everything just comes out as drivel, so you throw up your hands in despair.
Join the club.
Do you really think you are alone in this? As I near the 100 article mark of pieces I've written and published online, I still face these same feelings every day.
And so, I suspect, do those authors who have written over 1000 online articles. So join the club.
Now let's roll up our sleeves and fix this problem.
F. Scott Fitzgerald's editor once gave him the advice to, "just get it down on paper and we'll see what to do about it."
Another way to put this same advice is to quote Anne Lamont from her book, Bird By Bird, "just write shitty first drafts." Lamont got this wonderful advice from no less than Ernest Hemingway, who said, "all first drafts are shit."
So next time you get frustrated with your writing, just understand that everyone's first drafts produces cringes. So get used to.
Writing is really just a process of throwing ideas onto paper like spaghetti against the wall. Some of it will stick, and some will fall.
But rewriting is where you, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and the rest of us get to show the world what wonderful ideas we have. James Michner once said he produced horrible first drafts, but he was a great rewriter.
So set your goal not on being a writer, but a rewriter.
When you rewrite, you cut, paste, move things around, reword and cut some more. And then, at last, you will have an article worth putting your name on.
