Man builds record breaking 25ft house of cards

Bryan Berg has a surprising gravity-defying hobby. The 33-year-old American builds huge structures out of playing cards and his latest 25ft skyscraper has broken all records.

The professional 'cardstacker' has created a variety of breathtaking sculptures over the years including models of cathedrals, skyscrapers and stadiums, without using anything to stick them together.

Berg said the combined weight of the cards and his special grid structures helped hold his constructions in place.

Bryan stands amongst his card creations

His latest creation, which took five weeks to build, stands at 25ft 9inches tall and was made from 1,800 decks of playing cards. It was limited only by the height of the building he was working in.

While Berg's remarkable feats may take unyielding concentration and patience he insists his work is highly rewarding.

"I like what I do. This is no kind of torture or boredom for me," he said.

"In my lifetime, cardstacking has gone from a hobby to an obsession to a livelihood."

Berg first started building card houses at the age of eight. He broke the Guinness World Record for the World's Tallest House of Cards in 1992 at the age of seventeen, with a tower fourteen feet, six inches tall.

When asked recently if he could build a taller structure, perhaps even 100ft high, he was undaunted. "You bet!" he said.

61  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Technical Terms / ADSL on: February 01, 2008, 10:33:34 AM
ADSL is a type of high-speed Internet access for consumers. ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. This is a technology that allows for digital transmission over existing telephone lines. The term 'asymmetric' refers to the fact that the speed that you send data can be different than the speed that you can receive data. Therefore, a typical user will have a faster download speed than upload speed through ADSL. ADSL service is typically many times faster than a 56k modem while allowing for regular phone/voice usage simultaneously on the same telephone line. ADSL service is an "always-on" type of connection, which is especially vulnerable to hacker attacks. Users can prevent unauthorized access with a software firewall product.

Solar Building Automatically Shades Itself From The Sun

The Devonshire Building is a very green building, that automatically opens and closes banks of shades on it’s south facing façade. The “intelligent” system tracks the amount of sunlight entering the windows, and takes into account the time of day and season. The key architectural aim was to design a building that would incorporate as much natural daylight as physically possible. The blinds help manage overheating, and they are backed up by a geothermal cooling system. To top it all off, the building has solar modules on it’s roof that generate 25 kW of power.

The building’s large roof area also allowed the construction of a rainwater harvest system. The rain is collected via a symphonic rainwater system and then fed into a 20,000 liter underground tank. If the rainwater tank overfills, it overflows to a 40,000 liter geothermal tank to replenish the water for a heat sink that acts as a cooling source for the building and services’ systems.

The Devonshire Building was designed by the Dewjoc architecture firm. It is home to the Institute for Research and Sustainability at the University of Newcastle.

There are more details on the building: on Levolux and Corus websites.

BMW Designed 787 VIP Business Jet

If you are a couple dozen millions dollars short and cannot get a A380 Private Jet, you can try to contact Boeing and the BMW Group DesignworksUSA to get a deal on the 787 VIP.

The concept was exposed last week in the Hamburg Aircraft Interior Expo 2007.

BMW Group DesignworksUSA unveiled its Boeing 787 VIP cabin concept at Aircraft Interiors Expo 2007 in Hamburg last week. Boeing Business Jets approached BMW and challenged it to create a conceptual 787 aircraft interior for a fictitious affluent, Russian client in his mid-thirties. BMW says it designed the interior to cater for an owner who spends a significant amount of time travelling across the globe and needs an aircraft that can function as a second home with luxuries providing “for the enjoyment of life”. The team came up with an interior with semi-translucent walls and residential type furniture that lets space “visually continue around it”.

Yamaha’s $2000 Electric Bike

This compact electric bike, the EC-02 from Yamaha, costs just under $2000. First introduced in Japan two years ago, the EC-02 is similar to the Enertia motorcycle. But this scooter has more modest specs: a top speed of 18 MPH and a range of 40 miles. So it’s more suitable for commuters and scooting around in your neighborhood. There’s also a special iPod edition of the EC-02, that has a built-in iPod dock.

Interestingly, this scooter also glows in the dark Why? Yamaha says: ‘The technology enables the exterior to give a more vividly stereoscopic impression of the three-dimensional shape of any surface treated with the film.’

This bike is only currently available in Japan.

Oryx, The Bike From The Future

Oryx is an innovative time trial bike with a one-sided fork and chain-stay. Due to its Y-frame shape, its comfortably shock-proof without loosing ground contact.

Each bike is custom-made which guaranties the perfect fit for every rider and simplifies manufacturing; handle bars, stem and fork are made from one piece. The ergonomically shaped seat post and saddle are integrated into the frame with a hole to cool your bum even!

The frame and handle bars are connected via a frame-pivot, guiding cables through the frame as one turns. One of the innovations on the bike is the crank which is designed like a ring and mounted in the inside of the frame by two ball bearings. The whole bike itself is made of carbon composite, which is baked into the frame during the molding process.

In time trial races, like the Contre la Montre at the Tour de France, every second counts, thats why Oryx possesses an identical pair of wheels which can be removed by the push of a button.
