Leadership represents an idea whose time has come. Continue to develop your leadership skills and you will lead your organization to excellence.
Show me an award winning organization and I will show you an outstanding leader guiding it. Take a look at most Fortune 100 companies and you will find an excellent pool of leaders. When we talk about leaders we must also discuss some of the attributes of great leaders.
One of the top attributes of great leaders is their passion for learning more about leadership. Leaders never stop learning what it takes to be the best leader they can be.
Having worked on Capitol Hill for a member of Congress, I observed the programs he enrolled in to make himself a more effective leader. He signed up for programs such as language immersion. Why?
Quite a few of the representatives constituents speak Spanish, by learning to communicate with them he expanded his platform in their community. When it comes time to vote, the representative is positioned to capture a larger demographic compared to his challenger.
Leadership also consist of trust. Trusting people on your team to solve problems is one of the key attributes of a leader. Trust comes after people prove themselves and believe in the greater good.
The greater good is helping the organization achieve corporate excellence. In other words, if the organization succeeds, so does the leader. When Mobil Oil Company posted record profits last fall, much of the success was passed on to the President.
The President was rewarded for his leadership ability and when he retired he was given a multimillion dollar retirement package. Leadership excellence is determined by the market. the oil and gas market profited and so did the leadership at the helm.
Last but not least, a leader must set the example. If a leader establishes a policy for his staff to be at work on time, he had better be to work on time. In many instances an effective leader will arrive to work before anyone else because he or she must set the proper example.
The question you must ask yourself is, got leadership? You will know you have effective leadership skills when the organization you lead receives accolades for a job well done.
