Teacher's Ethics
« Posted: October 25, 2007, 02:04:49 PM »

Existence of any society or even community presupposes that members of that society or community follow some rules. It is so because otherwise society would turn into chaos and, besides, any systems need some regulations in order to function well. Social norms and ethics serve as such regulations along with law. Besides, there is a concept of professional ethics, which means holding to a set of moral principles and standards of conduct according to your particular profession. Any profession has accompanying code of ethics for those who perform duties in their respective fields. Profession of a teacher is of exceptional importance; so is the teacher ethics.

Indeed, teachers are crucial people both for individuals who grow up and get education at school and for society as a whole. Actually, along with parents, teachers are perhaps most important personalities in the life of young people and play essential role in the process of individual's development and growth. There are constant debates on what code of ethics for teachers should comprise. Parents are anxious over this issue because teacher ethics means for them something more than set of rules. Teacher ethics is a prerequisite of their children's normal growth in terms of acquiring decent education and favorable atmosphere for studies and interaction with peers. One may argue for hours what a good teacher is or what characteristics he/she should possess; because criteria are numerous and depend on our perception. Still, there are some basic rules any teacher should follow if he wants to be really tolerant and unbiased.

First of all, these rules deal with assessment. If a teacher assigns students to do some tasks, he or she should have clear criteria for estimation and treat all students equally. For example, term papers are written by students in order to evaluate their work during semester and that is why each teacher should be careful and thoughtful when estimating these papers. One more significant aspect in regards to interaction between students and teachers is confidentiality. Grades are the matter of teacher and student only. It is disgraceful if teachers discuss grades (especially low ones) within the whole group, because it may be quite humiliating for student. In the course of studies, a lot of things may happen, some are unpleasant and such that would rather be forgotten by all participants. For example, a student brought custom term papers instead of his own written assignments. Sure, it is a shameful deed. But is it good to discuss the case with the whole group, especially mentioning name of the student? Guess, no. At least names should not be called. Because if his name is called, a student will feel like a victim rather than a defaulter. Teacher has to be really tactful and sensitive, inasmuch as he deals with personalities that are easy to hurt.

Schools elaborate specific guidelines for teachers in the frames of school policy where include recommendations and rules. Definite rules are good but teacher ethics requires something more. It requires special internal characteristics and inborn tactfulness. Guidelines are perfect when working with machines and some schemes, but when it comes to work and interact with live people, especially, with young ones, they are not enough. Possessing necessary qualities and with experience, teachers develop their style of communication and hopefully it brings better results than mere following of guidelines.
