Searching the Search Engines
 by: Trina L.C. Sonnenberg

If you have an Internet connection, and want to find information, where is the first place you go? Most people make a B-line to Google, Yahoo, or Live Search (MSN). They are the biggest databases out there; right? But, is bigger always better?

After all... it takes a lot of time to comb through the vast number of results those big guys return. For example: Let's say that you are a person with a disability, and you'd like some information on getting assistance with something. You go to Google, and search the term, 'disabilities assistance'. Google will provide you with 3,560,000 results. Do you have time to look through even a quarter of those results? Probably not, but what alternative do you have? Are there any?

You bet... Specialized, topic specific search engines are available, and growing in popularity. These specialized search engines can cut your hunting time dramatically! Why spend an entire day, sifting through millions of results for disabilities assistance, when you can go to a search engine that specializes in that topic, and find what you need in a matter of minutes?

Are you looking for an event to attend? Go to a search engine that specializes in event listings. Do you have a need to find medical information? Again, go to a search engine that is devoted to medical listings.

If you happen to be someone who has information to share, topic specific, products or services, you should list it in a specialized database, to effectively reach your audience. Google is not the be-all, end-all in search engines. Actually, if you think about it, listing in a topic specific engine drastically reduces your competition for placement; putting you higher in the results.

Using the disabilities assistance example, let's say that you are in need of information on different types of wheelchairs. Google the term, 'wheel chair,' and you'll get 2,950,000 results. Now, go to a search engine that focuses on the topic of disabilities, and look. You will not get hundreds of result pages; what you will get is, perhaps ten pages of results to look through. How would you rather spend your time... Searching, or finding?

Clearly, finding specific information, as fast as possible, is our main goal. Specialized search engines deliver. You are special; shouldn't your search engine be special too?

Keywords: disabilities assistance, search engine, specialized search engine, event listings
