Let's discuss the fastest way to improve your page rank. Before we get into the heart of this discussion there are few optimization things we should review.

You always want to do your best to be sure your page is optimized for the search engines. Optimizing means that you want to use your keywords in your title, use a Description Meta tag which includes your most importnat keywords. Use a Keywords Meta tag, while many of the search engines no longer place importance on this meta, it is good practice to include it. Use the 'alt' attribute with your images and be sure to use your keywords in the "alt" tag. It is important that you use your keywords frequently throughout your page copy. For those unfamiliar with the term, Pace Copy is the actual content of your page. Most search engine spiders crawl your page's content, you want the engine to find your important keywords. Whenever possible, you should use heading tags to create an outline of your page. The heading tags are H1 through H6 and default to different text sizes. H1 defaults as the largest text with H6 being the smallest. Of course, you can change these text (font) sizes, and other font attributes, by using cascading style sheets.

Many search engines rank your pages by the number of other sites that are linking to it. Think of it as votes for your website. Every link to your site is a vote. Sound like a popularity contest? Always offer the benefits of linking to your site. One of the first rules in any negotiation is to tell the other side how they will benefit from the agreement. Every person in a negotiation has one thing on their mind, "What's in this for me? You want to make your offer as attractive to the other side as you can. Answer the question, "What's in it for them?

The primary trick here is to find site's that have a high page rank. It is true that many high ranking sites may refuse your request to link to your site unless you offer some really worthwhile benefit. Never fear, there is another approach.

Don't give up when you get a refusal. There is another approach. In the search engine query, type "link:" (without the quotes) followed by the url, or name, of the site you approached. The resulting search will display all of the site's currently linking to the one you named in your query. Now, go approach them for a link to your site. It's a 'backdoor' approach but it has been known to work.

Your primary objective here is to get high ranking site's to link to your site. There are many free programs on the internet which will return the page ranking of the site you enter into their submissioin form. You could also get Google's toolbar and install it on your browser. This toolbar displays page rankings.

While getting high ranking site's to link to your site is one of the best ways to improve your page's ranking, this does not mean you should forego all other optimization practices.
