Weston, FL and Cambridge UK – 5 May 2010 – Thales (Paris: HO), leader in information systems and communications security, announces that its Datacryptor high speed SONET/SDH and Ethernet Layer 2 hardware-based network encryptors have received FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification.

The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is an internationally recognized security benchmark for cryptographic modules developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). As security requirements are becoming increasingly stringent, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has specified that all cryptographic solutions must meet FIPS 140-2 Level 3 certification.  FIPS spans four distinct security levels.  Level 3 notably adds requirements for physical tamper-resistance of cryptographic modules.

“This certification represents our ongoing commitment for our Datacryptor product portfolio,” said Franck Greverie, vice president for the Information Technology Security activities of Thales.  “Compatible with most optical vendors’ equipment, these solutions are ideal for critically important high speed applications in government and commercial sectors such as satellite communications, network transport and LAN extension.”

The newly certified models in the high-speed optical network encryptor family are:

100 Mbps Ethernet Layer 2
1 Gbps Ethernet Layer 2
10 Gbps Ethernet Layer 2
OC-3/12/48/192 SONET/SDH

Thales’s SONET/SDH and Ethernet Layer 2 encryptors are widely deployed by many DoD agencies, including Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA), large system integrators, including AT&T, and leading commercial banks.  Compatible with the leading optical switch vendors for easy deployment and low maintenance operations, Thales encryptors are critically important for high-speed applications in government and commercial sectors such as satellite communications, network transport, and LAN extension.
