London, UK, March 23rd, 2010 - Telehouse and Teraco Data Environments today announced that their strategic alliance has been extended to include dedicated data centre space in Teraco’s new carrier neutral facility in Johannesburg.  As with Cape Town, which was opened in December last year, the space will be opened under the Telehouse brand and operated, supported and maintained by Teraco to Telehouse’s stringent global operating standards.

Lex van Wyk, managing director of Teraco comments: ‘We are delighted to formally welcome Telehouse in Johannesburg. Telehouse is one of the best names in the data centre and colocation market and we are able to bring them into our data centre at an important time for both our companies and also for the South African market in general’.

Andrew Fray, Business Development Director at Telehouse said: ‘We see South Africa’s telecommunication and ICT market developing rapidly, resulting in significant opportunities for companies to expand and place their infrastructure in locations which specialize in high levels of security, power management and cooling. The Teraco site in Johannesburg offers us some very significant advantages.  The site benefits from guaranteed power supply, an elevated location to site satellite and microwave antennae and a location close to the O.R. Tambo International Airport.  The majority of our prospective customers are international companies, so we needed to partner with a facility operated to international standards and situated in a location which is convenient.  Teraco’s Isando site fully meets our selection criteria.’

The Telehouse Johannesburg facility has already secured XConnect as its first customer.  XConnect provides more than 100 carriers and voice service providers in more than 20 countries worldwide with electronic number (ENUM) registry and peering solutions. Launching a neutral ENUM Registry and Federation service in South Africa, XConnect addresses a challenge faced by new VoIP entrants in South Africa and allows them to interconnect with carriers globally.

Teraco’s Johannesburg site was opened in January 2010 and offers superior levels of power, cooling, back-up and security.  The Johannesburg site is planned to grow to 4000 square metres, in a phased expansion.  In addition to its sites in Cape Town and Johannesburg, Teraco is also seeking to open a data centre in Durban later this year.

‘Already we are finding that demand for carrier neutral data centre space is building quickly. Senior ICT executives who are making decisions regarding the deployment of their critical infrastructure realize that they now have a wider choice of communication solutions in South Africa and that they can now house them more strategically and cost-effectively,’ says Van Wyk.
