Spotlight North West: Growing Opportunities in STEM Event
« Posted: May 31, 2012, 02:42:55 PM »

Spotlight North West: Growing Opportunities in STEM Event will be held on Tuesday 3rd July 2012 from 5pm-8pm at the Point, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Manchester.
This showcasing event will provide an opportunity for businesses and universities to connect on issues such as research, skills and training and will enable delegates to gain awareness of the outcomes of a number of recent North West Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiatives funded by the National HE STEM programme.
In particular, the event will showcase the STEM Business University Gateway; www.stembug.co.uk web tool. This tool has been developed specifically to lower the barriers for businesses that wish to access Higher Education Institution (HEI) services by providing a user friendly platform for accessing HEI expertise. STEMBUG allows businesses to explore sector expertise offered by North West universities as well as providing an easy route to identifying available training courses offered by regional institutions.
The event aims to attract a broad range of STEM companies. It will bring together North West universities, Sector Skills Councils (SSCs), Cluster organisations, Professional bodies and Funders to provide businesses with key information about current funding and partnership opportunities in the region. Whether you need to better understand the services available from North West HEIs, learn how you can influence the quality and employability of STEM graduate recruits or find out how you can up-skill your workforce this event is for you.
Dr Caroline Sudworth, HE Manager, Cogent SSC Ltd said:
"Cogent, the Sector Skills Council for the Science Based Industries, welcomes the work undertaken by the National HE STEM Programme.
Through active engagement with employers and universities across the North West region, long term relationships have been forged for the future.
In line with the employer voice, the programmes have concentrated upon key areas of demand including greater access to higher education for employees and new entrants, enhanced links with further education partners, the integration of employer knowledge in the student curriculum, enhancing technical and employability skills, and the delivery of flexible learning packages.
The availability of STEMBUG will also ensure ease of access for employers seeking solutions to business needs."
Dr Louise Butcher, Institute of Physics said:
“The courses and resources generated within the Higher Level Skills projects are a great asset for businesses looking to upskill their employees.”
