Small cells lift off in Azerbajan as ip.access takes to the skies
« Posted: November 15, 2012, 02:50:51 PM »

Cambridge, UK - November 14th, 2012: Leading small cell developer and manufacturer today confirmed its partnership with Azerfon to deploy picocells in Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Azerbaijan and also onto Azal Airlines’ aircraft operating from the capital’s airport.
Nar Mobile has now become the first mobile company in Azerbaijan to offer in-flight mobile communication services - on board of the Azerbaijan Airlines fleet.
The partnership will now allow passengers flying to or from Baku on Azal flights – to be able to make and receive calls, send SMS and surf the internet from their own mobile phones using the on board Nar Mobile network. As announced earlier this year, leading inflight connectivity provider OnAir is providing Azerfon with the technical solution for this project.
Announcing the partnership, ip.access CEO, Mr. Simon Brown said: “The experience and success we have had working with other airlines made ip.access a natural choice for this deployment. The nature of our solution and the ability of our system to integrate with other vendors has accelerated the introduction of these new services.”
Mr. Timucin Kutar, Azerfon’s CTO highlighted the work and the speed of the partners delivering the project. “Heydar Aliyev airport is one of the busiest international airports in the region and its position makes it a popular locale for transferring passengers,” he said. “By quickly delivering this project, ip.access will help us provide in-flight GSM coverage for Voice, SMS and Data Access for some million passengers while they are in the air journey with Azal’s aircrafts.”
