OMA Throws Spotlight on QoE as a Service at SDP Global Summit
« Posted: September 12, 2013, 08:49:47 PM »

Rome, Italy – Thursday, September 12, 2013- The Open Mobile Alliance has announced that Dr. Camillo Carlini, Wireless Devices Project Manager of Telecom Italia, will represent OMA and share his expertise on integrating core telecom and OTT services at the SDP Global Summit taking place at the Crowne Plaza St Peters in Rome. The presentation, entitled ‘Offering Premium QoE as a Service: How Mobile Operators will Monetize Network Resources and Enhance Mobile Apps Quality’, will take place on Thursday 19 September at 15:05 local time. Within his presentation, Dr Carlini will explore how OTT services can better exploit network resources resulting in better Quality of Experience (QoE) for the end user and network efficiency. He will also discuss how to provide a deep integration of network, service and product development and how to maintain existing assets whilst showing flexibility and the ability to evolve.

The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) is the leading industry forum for developing market driven, interoperable mobile service enablers.  A key area of work within OMA is building enablers that help network operators expose value for apps developers while keeping in mind the quality experience of the service for end-users. This has resulted in new OMA Enablers and Application Program Interfaces (API’s) such as the OMA Quality of Service (QoS) API and the OMA Device Application Network Efficiency (DANE) Enabler.

With years of experience in increasing customers’ QoE and services profitability, Dr. Carlini’s presentation is a must-see for gaining an insight into how new possibilities of network value disclosure can avoid mobile broadband commoditization. Telecom Italia is trialing both network and device side enablers and APIs, which are aligned with ongoing technical work in OMA, to open the way to forthcoming Smart Pipe scenarios and business models.

Dr. Carlini said: “This is an important time for the mobile industry. We are now able to overcome dumb pipe models by fostering mobile broadband business sustainability. We are also able to promote global initiatives to reach out to mobile developers and furthermore, we understand the necessity of defining and adopting innovative service layer architectures early on, for both networks and devices.”

Head of Wireless Network at Telecom Italia, Mr. Michele Gamberini, said: “Within a mobile industry experiencing a revolution in the value chain and in the classes of available services, operators are creating new opportunities to increase both network sustainability and customers’ QoE. Precious network capabilities, such as apps-driven QoS, can be used by both service providers and apps developers to enhance end-user experience and generate new value for each stakeholder.”
