Integrated packaging and business paper producer uses real-user monitoring solution to track the global performance of Oracle HFM to user level across 31 countries
Egham, Surrey – 14th June 2010 - Triometric today announced that the international integrated paper and packaging company, Mondi has deployed its real user monitoring solution for 370 licensed users of Oracle Hyperion Financial Management (HFM) across 31 countries to mitigate the Company’s group consolidation and financial reporting risk. As a result, Mondi has also realised a business value in keeping employees working efficiently with optimum uptime, reduced the requirement for and costs of engaging third party consultants and saved on support through IT helpdesk calls being closed more quickly.

Initiated by a project that saw the Company upgrade its HFM system from version 3.5 to version nine and relocate its data centre from Austria to the USA, Mondi underwent a performance service audit with Triometric that very quickly revealed an impact on the performance of its Oracle HFM.
Chris Crutchley, Senior Financial Analyst at Mondi explained, “The findings gave us a great deal of insight and were highly valuable. They enabled us to have more meaningful discussions with our new hosting partner.”
Mondi had a requirement to ensure that the Company gets the required levels of service from outsourced partners. There are service level agreements (SLAs) in place related to, amongst other things, uptime and bandwidth guarantees.
“For the first time we had a definitive picture of user behaviour that answered all sorts of questions and exposed the inefficiencies of key work processes,” continued Crutchley. “We were also able to action some quick fixes. Caching of static images was a problem for example, and we’ve improved caching by 300-400 per cent since going live.”
“Now we know if a particular user is running excessive calculations,” continued Crutchley. “Certain web forms were too large with too many lines and columns, so we redesigned the interface to avoid the downloading of massive spreadsheets every time users clicked a button.”
Matthew Goulden, Managing Director at Triometric added, “As the main corporate reporting tool, HFM is critical to the smooth running of the organisation and for Mondi’s year-end statutory reporting requirements. It also handles the month-to-month reporting of financial results and associated key performance measures such as sales, production and headcount as well as other relevant management reporting information.”
“The bandwidth limitations can really affect the performance of our enterprise applications,” Crutchley concluded. “With so many users working in concentrated time zones peak working times like month end can be very frustrating for users experiencing poor system performance.”
In fact, high volume peaks of traffic can involve significantly more than 500 concurrent sessions through the web and Excel interfaces.
Using Triometric’s passive packet capture technology enabled Mondi to benchmark its application performance before and after the data centre move and HFM upgrade, and helped to mitigate the risk associated with the project. Mondi also wanted to ensure that internal objectives were being met and that the user interface responsiveness was not negatively impacted either by HFM itself, or one of the variables outside the financial reporting processes. These variables include local LAN connection speeds, competing traffic on the LAN from other applications, the extent of static image caching, size of data files requested from the database, excessive database consolidations and new logic rules in the application which can slow calculations.
