Reading, UK. 24 September 2013 – IGEL Technology has added a new all-in-one thin client to its Universal Desktop range designed for retail Point of Sale, limited desk space environments such as healthcare and financial sectors, as well as digital signage and kiosk terminals in public institutions and libraries. The UD10 is a high-performance, high-end thin client with a large 23.6 inch (60 cm) widescreen display and a powerful 1 GHz dual-core processor. It comes with numerous interfaces, including USB 3.0 and optional extras such as a touchscreen and WLAN.
Thanks to the VIA Eden X2 dual-core processor with the VIA VX900 chip set, the UD10 guarantees high performance, especially with virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI), multimedia and web applications. To cater for the increasing protocol-related requirements imposed on today's thin clients, the new CPU is backed by up to 2 GB of DDR3 RAM and up to 4 GB of flash storage in the form of an SATA SSD. Nevertheless, the UD10 is extremely economical, with a power consumption of 38 watts when operating (idle mode) and just 2 watts when in standby mode including Wake on LAN. The UD10's 23.6 inch widescreen display offers full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels). For dual view operation, an additional monitor can be connected via the display port output (dual view resolution: 2560 x 1600 pixels).
Useful interfaces and a smartcard reader
With its optional infrared touchscreen, which can be operated even when wearing work gloves, the IGEL UD10 is particularly suitable for point-of-sale use as a presentation, checkout or web terminal. For even greater flexibility, the pivot function allows the display to be turned 90°. The standard connections include two fast USB 3.0 and three USB 2.0 ports. There are also two PS/2 ports, two serial interfaces, a display port including a DVI adapter and a parallel port. On the audio side, line-out, line-in and mic-in sockets are available. To complement the 1 Gbit Ethernet interface, IGEL offers an 802.11 b/g/n-standard WLAN option for the UD10. The integrated smartcard reader also provides an efficient basis for secure two-factor authentication solutions and multi-user scenarios with changing workstations.
Wide range of functionality and new IGEL Linux v5
The IGEL UD10 comes with a choice of two operating systems: The new IGEL Linux v5 firmware (UD10-LX) or Microsoft Windows Embedded 7 (UD10-W7). Regardless of the operating system, the UD10's software allows access to all commonly used cloud and server-based computing and virtual desktop environments, such as Citrix XenApp/Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and VMware Horizon View. Additional functions such as local multimedia playback, an Internet browser, terminal emulations for host access and an SIP client for VoIP are also included. As a result, the IGEL UD10 is ideal for use in environments with server-based computing, mainframe, cloud services and, not least, VDI including multimedia and USB redirection. As with all Universal Desktop models, the market-leading IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) remote management software comes as standard.
Price, availability and warranty
The IGEL UD10 will be available from 1 October. Prices will start from £621 excluding vat. Customers receive a standard two-year warranty starting from the date of dispatch. By registering free-of-charge online, the hardware warranty period can be extended to three years.
