London, August 5th, 2013: judo payments, the UK’s leading card payment provider for mobile commerce, today announced it has chosen the final five winners of its £1 million competition for British based start-up companies building apps for Android and Apple smartphones. Each company will receive £100,000 in free credit and debit card processing through judo’s backend mobile payments system, which will make it easy for consumers to pay for products and services on their apps.
After a highly competitive selection process, the following five start-ups were chosen for their unique business proposition and potential market appeal: Grab, a mobile ordering platform for restaurants facilitating ordering and payment with just four touches and a PIN; Jumpin, a community-focused taxi booking and sharing mobile app purely for students; Ps.Postcards, users choose postcards from the gallery or create their own for Ps.Postcards to mail as real keepsake postcards to anyone’s front door, anywhere in the world; Boppl, an app for real-time mobile ordering and payment for bars, cafes and restaurants; Independent London, assists independent shoppers while on the go – locates unique London shops and allows users to pay in a few taps.
Five other start-ups were announced as winners of the first competition round on July 15th: BarPass, which allows users to order drinks at their table from pubs and bars; Theatre Ninjas- a service providing highly discounted theatre, comedy and music tickets; Metavurt, an innovative next generation retail point of sale service; Duchy, an app that helps artists and craftsmen monetise their skills; and the Stealth app, which helps restaurants with customer retention, loyalty, marketing and order value.
Dennis Jones, CEO of judo said: “We were overwhelmed by the quality of applicants for our competition. The talent for app development in the UK is immense and the selection process was difficult to complete. However, we are confident that the 10 start-ups that we have decided to work with will not only deliver a killer app but also profit from their business model with the help of our mobile payment processing app.”
“The biggest challenge facing app developers is how to process payment transactions and how to include card acceptance into a product that is sold into other businesses. We are offering a solution to this challenge- a ready-made back end system that takes the headache away from developers so they can focus on the functionality of their apps.”
