Core Facts
Tribute Island is a digital island in Second Life, which has been launched by lastingtribute.co.uk, a web-based service that gives people the opportunity to leave online tributes and memories in celebration of the lives of loved ones who have died.
A key feature of Tribute Island is the memorial to fallen servicemen and women from the conflicts in the Gulf and Afghanistan, who are remembered in their own virtual quarter.
As well as the military cemetery, Tribute Island celebrates the lives of some of the world’s most inspiring people in a virtual environment where the users can learn more about each tribute, and pay their respects by leaving messages and adding images.
Most of the exhibits are interactive in some way, with the island roughly divided into topical areas. And content will continually change, to encourage regular visits, as tributes are rotated and updated.
Quotes
lastingtribute.co.uk’s island architect Nik Hewitt said: “The project is all about people who have inspired us, entertained us, selflessly protected us, and who have filled our lives with sound and colour. From the British Army, Navy, and RAF, to the political, scientific, and Hollywood greats.”
“We hold regular events, and information is posted for these both in the Info Centre and at the hub or through the Tribute Island group.”
“The British Military section is where we've replicated individual tribute markers to all the UK soldiers and military personnel who've lost their lives in the continuing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.”
“You really have to see the British Military section, where we've replicated individual tribute markers to all the UK soldiers and military personnel who've lost their lives in the continuing conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. We have seen ‘avatars’, characters created by serving military personnel, wandering through the graves looking for fallen comrades.”
