LCOS 8.0 features IPsec HTTPS tunneling for secure VPN connections over any Internet connection
LONDON, UK, Tuesday 27th July, 2010—An abundance of new functions and upgrades for all LANCOM devices is on offer with the latest LANCOM operating system LCOS version 8.0. This free update has a strong emphasis on security and management.
The most significant addition for users of VPN is the automatic IPsec HTTPS tunneling (IPsec-over-HTTPS). This feature means that highly secure IPsec VPN connections are available anywhere, even if the available Internet connection has restrictions—for example at hotspots with restrictive security settings or in certain mobile-phone networks. If users wish, IPsec-over-HTTPS can activate automatically if a standard IPsec connection should fail, for example due to prohibitive firewall settings.
This function is available for remote-access connections from Windows or Mac OS notebooks with the LANCOM Advanced VPN Client, and also for VPN connections between LANCOM routers (e.g. for connections established over UMTS/3G mobile-phone networks). IPsec-over-HTTPS is supported by the latest version 2.22 of the LANCOM Advanced VPN Client for Windows, which is available as a free update to owners of the client version 2.2. The latest Mac version of the client already features this function.
Following an overhaul of the LANCOM management tools LANconfig and (W)LANmonitor, the tasks of configuration and management have been completely modernised. A new look & feel plus new application help with tips for networking professionals and beginners alike now have the same logical structure as WEBconfig, the configuration interface for web browsers.
Also new is the function allowing LANCOM devices with a USB port to be provisioned with firmware, certificates and configurations from a USB stick. During rollouts or routine maintenance, firmware and configurations can be instantly updated, and there's no need for a laptop or manual input.
Furthermore, devices with LCOS 8.0 can store an alternative boot configuration which activates after a device reset, offering an alternative to the factory settings for rollouts or commissioning.
