Building IPTV specialist enables onsite real-time transcoding with new technology, allowing one source to provide multiple AV streaming formats

London, 9th September 2011: Exterity, the Building IPTV specialist, today announces the launch of its new AvediaStream Transcoders. The Transcoders use High Definition (HD) video streams to create lower bitrate alternatives, enabling video content to be streamed to the widest possible range of screens and devices. The new additions to Exterity’s portfolio will ensure that organisations across a wide variety of industries (broadcast, corporate, hospitality, stadiums or education) can distribute video content easily and efficiently, regardless of the viewing size or the bandwidth available for transmission.

Traditionally, organisations have struggled with streaming the high quality video available inside their building or campus to employees outside of the company’s local IP network. However, Exterity’s new AvediaStream Transcoders enable HD content used locally to be easily converted into low resolutions or bitrates for effective streaming over an Internet connection or Wi-Fi. This allows content to be delivered efficiently to remote workers, students or in remote offices/locations worldwide.

Distributing AV content without the need for increased bandwidth or infrastructure costs is important for organisations wanting to communicate effectively with all stakeholders. Transcoding, as part of Exterity’s broad range of integrated, end-to-end Building IPTV solutions, enables organisations to create multiple versions of low bandwidth channels while maintaining the original HD version. This cutting-edge transcoding technology creates duplicate channels for use with a variety of platforms and applications. For example, the original HD source for use on LCD screens in reception areas can be transcoded to SD for embedding into an internal webpage and QVGA for streaming to mobile devices.

This is possible due to Exterity’s live transcoding capability, further reinforcing the company’s leading position in AV over IP distribution. Using the technology HD streams can be easily converted into a SD stream (transcoded) and lower resolution (transrated), efficiently scaling the content for delivery to mobile devices, embedding in web pages or integration with digital signage. Furthermore, the Transcoders can convert new video formats, such as H.264, into MPEG-2 for compatibility and integration with legacy devices such as SD set-top-boxes.

“Organisations spanning every vertical sector are increasingly using video content to improve their business and it is apparent that transcoding has become absolutely key to achieving this,” comments Colin Farquhar, CEO, Exterity. “Managing multiple platforms and the fragmentation of content is currently a huge and time consuming challenge for organisations. These new transcoders eliminate many of those problems, enabling firms to stream content efficiently organisation-wide via the most appropriate viewing platform. Transcoding provides businesses with an almost endless list of applications from delivering CEO company messages worldwide to the distribution of a broadcaster’s content for editorial review.”

“The introduction of live transcoding into our technology is an important move for Exterity and something that has been driven by both customer needs and Exterity’s passion for being at the forefront of the AV over IP market. The mobile nature of today’s working population means that customers are increasingly recognising the opportunities that AV over IP distribution and flexible access to content can bring to their organisations,” concludes Farquhar.

Exterity’s Building IPTV solutions enable organisations to use existing building, campus, or wide-area networks to leverage the power of TV and video for success.
