The Equinix Silicon Cup
Established in 2000, the Silicon Cup has grown to include more than 400 competitors from across the IT industry, many of whom have never sailed before. Over its history, the event has raised more than £350,000 for its nominated charities, which this year include Dreams Come True, a charity which helps fulfil the dreams of terminally and seriously ill children, The Jubilee Sailing Trust, which enables people of all physical abilities to sail tall ships on the open seas, and the NSPCC, long term campaigner against cruelty to children. In addition to raising money for good causes, the 2010 Equinix Silicon Cup provides a unique opportunity for IT companies to entertain customers, reward employees and network with their peers from across the industry.
The Equinix Silicon Cup is a two day event, which includes competitive yacht racing on the Solent as well as a number of social events, fundraising challenges and charity auctions. Professional crews are on hand to provide full training for participants with little or no previous sailing experience, while IT companies with more experienced sailors can enter their own crews and even their own boats.
“Equinix has been involved in the Silicon Cup for six years -, initially as a participant and, since 2009, as title sponsor, so we have firsthand experience of just how challenging and fun yacht racing can be,” said Eric Schwartz, president of Equinix in Europe. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming both budding and experienced sailors from across the UK IT industry to the 2010 Equinix Silicon Cup, and lending our support to three charities that make such a positive difference to people’s lives.”
Shaun Frolich, chairman of the Silicon Cup Committee and solution partner director, Microsoft Ltd, commented: “It’s great that a company like Equinix has once again provided its backing for the 2010 Silicon Cup. With its support, the 2010 Silicon Cup is on course to become our biggest regatta to date, raising more money than ever for our chosen charities, and providing IT companies with a great opportunity to meet new people, thank their customers and employees, and enjoy time in an exhilarating atmosphere
