CloudBees appoints Kohsuke Kawaguchi as Chief Technology Officer
« Posted: January 17, 2014, 07:03:44 PM »

Creator of Jenkins CI to Assume Strategic Technology Role

Brussels, Belgium. – January 17, 2014 – CloudBees, Inc., the Enterprise Platform as a Service (PaaS) innovation leader, today announced it has promoted Kohsuke Kawaguchi to the position of chief technology officer. Kawaguchi, the founder and current lead developer of the popular Jenkins continuous integration (CI) open source community, has served as an elite developer and architect for CloudBees since 2010.

As the first chief technology officer in CloudBees’ four-year history, Kawaguchi will report to CEO Sacha Labourey and Senior Vice President of Products Steven G. Harris. He will be responsible for leading the development of CloudBees’ technology strategy. He will be based in Los Altos, CA.

“This move recognizes the defining role Kohsuke has played in guiding the development of the CloudBees platform to ensure it remains the leading continuous integration and continuous delivery platform on the market,” said Sacha Labourey, CloudBees’ founder and CEO. “Time to market is becoming an increasingly important business driver for our customers. We look forward to leveraging Kohsuke’s expertise to extend and develop our platform and strategy to meet the continuous delivery needs of enterprises.”

As founder and community leader of the Jenkins open source project, Kawaguchi is credited with the vision to create the world’s most popular continuous integration server and nurturing a vibrant developer community that today includes more than 1,000 contributors. Jenkins is used by enterprises around the world to automate and manage application development and delivery processes across the entire application lifecycle.

Kawaguchi is a well-respected developer and popular speaker at industry and Jenkins community events. He's often asked to speak about his experience and approach in creating Jenkins; a CI platform that has become a widely adopted and successful community-driven open source project. The principles behind the Jenkins community – extensibility, inclusiveness, low barriers to participation – have been the keys to its success. Kawaguchi's sensibilities in creating Jenkins and his deep understanding of how to translate its capabilities into usable software have also had a major impact on CloudBees' strategy as a company. Before joining CloudBees, Kawaguchi was with Sun Microsystems and Oracle, where he worked on a variety of projects and initiated the open source work that led to Jenkins.

“I am honored by the promotion to chief technology officer. It is exciting to continue on with the extensive work we have already started to make continuous delivery – whether on-premise or in the cloud – a reality for enterprises,” Kawaguchi said. “Both CloudBees and the Jenkins project have tremendous opportunities ahead as we further develop our Jenkins-related offerings and help our customers adopt and benefit from continuous integration.”
