FTTH Council Asia-Pacific marks international Gimme Fiber Day following successful workshop in Australia

Regional events will be held to celebrate the global initiative, now in its second year

Singapore. November 04, 2014 – The FTTH Council Asia-Pacific today turned the spotlight on Gimme Fiber Day – with a whole host of activities arranged to commemorate the global initiative.
The event, held every year on November 4 to mark the birthday of fiber optic guru and Nobel Prize winner Sir Charles Kuen Kao, will celebrate and showcase fiber optic in the home, which the council believes is the only future-proof Internet access solution.
Thousands of people are expected to take part in the day via social media, which last year saw posts about why individuals want fiber optic broadband in their home. Meanwhile, members of the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific will gather for regional get-togethers, with lunches and dinners taking place to celebrate the occasion.
“Gimme Fiber Day is an important event in our calendar that showcases and addresses the needs and concerns of consumers and the fiber optic community in general. We are committed to continuing to spread the message on Fiber to the Home (FTTH) and regaling the positive impact it can have on individuals’ lives and their communities,” said Dr Bernard Lee, President of the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific.
The commemorative celebrations follow an extremely successful Australian Workshop for FTTH Council Asia-Pacific, held in Melbourne at the end of September. Guest speakers were carefully chosen to ensure a consistent, accurate and unbiased view of FTTH was provided to educate and promote.
Attending delegates heard from Dr. Craig Watkins, Senior Research Consultant at Spiral Systems Pty Ltd, about FTT-Street-Lead-In-Pit, which delivers the same benefits of FTTH but costs less through use of small micro-node devices installed in street lead-in pits.
Meanwhile Graham Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer at Crown Fibre Holdings Limited, revealed details about the New Zealand Ultra-Fast Broadband Experience and Tony Conlan, Key Account Manager at JDSU Australia, spoke about Fiber Monitoring in Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multipoint FTTH Networks.
Other speakers included representatives from the FTTH Council Asia-Pacific, Dr. Bernard Lee, Regional Technology Director of Senko Advanced Components; Bill Kotsakidis, Chief Technical Officer of Warren and Brown Technologies; and Professor Thas A Nirmalathas, of the Institute for a Broadband-Enabled Society. Mohamed Shajahan Iqbal, Director & Treasurer of FTTH Council Asia-Pacific, and Wataru Katsurashima, Project Manager of FTTH Products, Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd also presented.
“With significant developments taking place in FTTH, our workshops and seminars are a valuable tool in accelerating the adoption of FTTH in order to enhance the sustainable quality of life through optical fiber access in Asia-Pacific,” concluded Hasan Munasir Choudhury, General Manager, FTTH Council Asia-Pacific.
