With the help of Trovus and with the introduction of business intelligence and mobile technology currently being developed by BT, BTFS are being smarter than ever with their people data.
BTFS is an up and coming player in the facilities management market. Launched in-house by their parent company BT, BTFS manages the group's expanding estate. At the heart of BTFS' culture and success is their people team. HR Director Hilary Savage-Martin shares how, with the help of data consultancy Trovus, BTFS are using their people data to develop and maintain a happy culture and empowered workforce.
"Something that is always on my agenda is getting the balance of what's right for the business and what's right for our people", says Hilary. "If it swings one way more than the other then we need to reset the dial. We need to get the balance right of meeting our business objectives, and providing a great culture for our people to work and grow in".
Hilary recognises the importance of data when running a successful people strategy. "Our people strategy is to get, grow and keep the best people for BTFS, and we can only do that with really robust data to help us. The right data will help us to plan for the future and to set our strategic direction".
"Our key initiative is to make sure we have the right data across the whole business and this is something we need to be better at providing end to end throughout the business. "We have all this rich data and discussion going on at review, and we need to use this to help us understand where our gaps are and what we're doing well; then we can look at where we need to invest more. The data piece and working with Trovus is a step forward. In traditional appraisals this wasn't looked at. It's frustrating that people are doing all this work without getting all the information they can. The potential is huge".
"I also want to be able to look at the hard data stuff, and how we're tracking personal people performance from quarter to quarter. This will help us to see how our culture's bedding in, how we're identifying talent, and what the development needs of our people are. We need this data for efficient and effective workforce planning; at the moment we only have a top level view".
BTFS is working hard to align their people and business objectives. They are currently running a leadership development programme for their managers and an engagement agenda for their workforce. "The engagement agenda is huge. We want to make sure our people feel engaged and empowered in the success of the business, and we also want to drive personal performance at the same time".
With the help of Trovus and with the introduction of business intelligence and mobile technology currently being developed by BT, BTFS are being smarter than ever with their people data. "This business intelligence and mobile technology being introduced will help us to be even better at scheduling our people and workload, and it will also help us determine what's important for the customer. I think that this will move our business on in great strides and it is all based on data. Soon we should be able to join all our data together in one solution".
"It's about utilising the data to forward think and stress test in order to make sure our strategy is absolutely going in the right direction. If it's not and the data is telling us something completely different then we need to change track. The data will give us the courage of our conviction to be able to do that".
