ABBYY®, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies and services, today announced FineReader® Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS, a Software Development Kit (SDK) which delivers intelligent, trainable document classification and conversion to Multifunction Peripherals (MFP). With ABBYY’s award-winning recognition and brand new auto file naming, classification, PDF MRC conversion and business card recognition technologies built in, FineReader Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS allows MFP vendors to remove application middleware, creating devices that are smarter right out of the box. As a result, the new SDK reduces deployment complexity and costs for MFP vendors while delivering additional value.

FineReader Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS includes advanced document classification, intelligent file name generation and business card recognition — allowing developers to create document processing solutions with powerful functions previously unavailable in MFPs. With the new generation of ABBYY’s Embedded OS SDK, MFPs can provide new services, including automatic creation of meaningful file names (eliminating the need for users to rename scanned files and enabling more efficient archiving), easy extraction of information from a single scan of multiple business cards, and many more. FineReader Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS also provides support for more than 60 languages, enabling MFP vendors to address the needs of international companies.

“The global market is changing as end users look for easier ways to conduct numerous functions from a single device. This has led MFP vendors to seek technologies that can expand their solutions’ capabilities in order to ensure they remain at the centre of the document ecosystem,” said Andrey Isaev, director of the Technology Products Department at ABBYY. “FineReader Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS delivers intelligent, trainable classification and conversion to MFP vendors, increasing the range and quality of services they can offer.”

The breakthrough functionality of the new ABBYY SDK, combined with an optimised balance between conversion speed and accuracy, enables MFP vendors to considerably increase overall usability of their devices. In more detail, the key features and benefits of the SDK include:

Intelligent File Name Generation. ABBYY’s patent-pending technology enables MFP devices to automatically generate meaningful file names for scanned documents by analysing their logical structure, detecting unique identifiers and choosing the most suitable variants. This eliminates the need to rename scanned files or having to work with confusing names (such as document001.jpg), and minimises the risk of losing a newly-scanned file amid a myriad of other files on a hard drive.

Trainable Document Classification. Provides MFPs with artificial intelligence that helps users save time and work more productively. Devices can now automatically recognise document types based on content and geometric analysis, and remember typical user actions and settings (e.g. destination folders, email addresses, export format, etc.), enabling MFPs to automatically suggest actions and streamline tasks.

Business Card Reading with Automatic Card Split. Equips MFPs with an embedded business card reading “scanner” that can recognise 23 languages without the need for additional software. MFPs can process a number of business cards in one scan and export them into separate vCard files, which can be easily imported into Microsoft Outlook.

Industry-leading MRC Support for PDF and PDF/A. Mixed Raster Content (MRC) compression technology reduces the size of output PDF (PDF/A) files while preserving visual quality. Especially effective for colour files, MRC compression results in files up to 10X smaller compared to JPEG compression. As a result, the SDK’s advanced compression technology enables users to create high-quality searchable PDFs without burdening storage or network resources.

CJK Languages Support. The new version of FineReader Engine for Embedded OS enables document recognition in the most popular Asian languages such as Chinese (both Simplified and Traditional), Japanese and Korean. Combined with support for more than 60 other languages, it delivers unrivalled opportunities for vendors with global operations.

Integration into Multiple Platforms. The product has been adapted for the most common CPU types: x86 (Atom, Core 2, etc.), ARM, PowerPC, and for many embedded operating systems including Windows for x86 processors (Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded), Linux, VxWorks, NetBSD, Android etc. This range can be expanded with virtually any CPU type and OS on demand.

Availability and Pricing
ABBYY FineReader Engine 2.0 for Embedded OS licensing is available via a flexible program. A combination of product features can be selected to achieve a cost effective synergy of functionality and price. For information on licensing models and pricing, please contact your local ABBYY office.
