Some may call it ego, others may call it pride...
Whatever you call it, beware. It (ego) can get you into a lot of trouble.
People that know me well would probably agree that I have a lot of "A" type characteristics. For me and others with this type of character the "ego" or our "Pride" can be our achilles heel.
Let me explain.
If you look at the traits of the most successful you'll find that many are closely aligned with the "A" type person. However, when someone get's "too big for their britches" they lose sight of what is important, resulting in bad decision or worse yet, no decisions.
I have an example of my ego getting in my way!
This example happened to me this afternoon when I was driving back from the airport. I made a quick trip to visit with a partner yesterday and after I landed today I was in a hurry to get to another meeting I had later this evening.
My example is small (in comparison) but after it happened I knew my ego got the better of me. :-D
Here's what happened...
I was hauling down the highway...going fast.
Making great time.
Then all of a sudden I was being challenged by another driver. I was in the fast lane (my second mistake), then another driver was pulling up along side of me in the middle lane.
I decided that I was going to go faster and stay in the lead (my third and final mistake.)
We rounded the turn and I was slightly in the lead...when out of nowhere there was one of Dallas' finest.
"oh #*%8", I said to myself.
And in a second, his lights were on and he was in hot pursuit. My goodness, "I hope he is going after the other driver", I thought to myself!
No such luck. He wanted me!
To make a long story short. I was stopped, given two tickets and lost all the time I had made. But honestly I wasn't that mad because after all I was guilty.
So the moral of the story is this...If I didn't let my ego get the best of me, I would have made it to my meeting on time. I wouldn't have two BIG bills to pay and the other driver would have been hit with these tickets.
My Ego got me!
So, if you want to be successful....keep your ego in check.
