Follow these simple steps and you'll be on your way to starting a highly profitable daycare business.

1. ASSESS THE NEED AND DEMAND FOR CHILD CARE WHEN STARTING A DAYCARE BUSINESS.

Determine if there is a need for child day care services in your area or community by:

- Interview parents of pre-school children to find out what they need.

- Call several existing centers and family providers to find out if they have places available. This will give you an indication about how much demand there is.

- Find out from local schools if parents are asking about child care services in your area.

- Call child care interest groups to get an idea of the general statistics in your area in terms of numbers. You can also check with children’s charities, hospitals and churches.

2. FIND OUT ABOUT LICENSING REGULATIONS WHEN STARTING A DAYCARE BUSINESS

- Get a copy of the licensing regulations and requirements for your state and local area. You can do this by contacting NRC (1-800-598-KIDS(5437) who will provide you with the right contact details for your state.

- Find out how to apply for a license and apply for one.

- Most states require child day care providers to be licensed or registered before they can start operating and providing services.

3. MAKE A LIST OF ALL THE EQUIPMENT THAT YOU’LL NEED WHEN STARTING A DAYCARE BUSINESS

- You'll need to decide how you are going to acquire the equipment that you don't currently have.

4. ASSESS YOUR FINANCIAL SITUATION WHEN STARTING A DAYCARE BUSINESS

- Do you have enough money to get the business started? Is it enough to keep you going while your child care business gets off the ground?

- Are you going to need a loan, grant or donations?

- How much are you going to charge? Make your rates competitive but don’t make them so low that you start making a loss.

5. DECIDE ON A MARKETING PLAN WHEN STARTING A DAYCARE BUSINESS

- How are you going to promote your day care business? There are many creative ways that you can use to promote your business. But whatever you do, make sure you're on the licensing agency's register of care providers. You may also want to contact local schools and let them know about your daycare.

- Have professional looking business cards, fliers, ads and brochures designed.

- Network with other providers if possible.
