Holograms Break Storage Record - Kate Greene, Technology Review

Holographic storage company InPhase Technologies announced this week that it has broken a storage density record by writing 64.3 gigabytes of data onto a single square inch of disc space. This advance could eventually lead to a holographic disc that can hold more than 100 DVD-quality movies, according to the company. By comparison, magnetic disks, such as those in the hard drives of computers, can manage a storage density of about 37.5 gigabytes per square inch of disk.

Small, Cheaper Flash Memory - Kevin Bullis, Technology Review

Motorola spinoff Freescale Semiconductor of Austin, TX, is using nanoscale materials to develop a new generation of flash memory that will be half the size of conventional flash devices and could cost much less. In addition, the technology would make it possible to affordably embed flash and logic devices on the same chip, a move that would save space and energy and improve chip speed. Freescale has already demonstrated a 24-megabit flash device using the materials, and it plans to produce commercial products by the end of 2008.

Nanowire Computing Made Practical - Kevin Bullis, Technology Review

One of the leading candidates for a technology that could make computers smaller and more powerful is based on transistors made from semiconducting nanowires. But until now, circuits made with such transistors have been impractical, because they were too power hungry and too difficult to manufacture. Now researchers at Caltech have built efficient nanowire-based circuits using a process they believe could be reliable enough for mass production.

Is the iPhone worth the hype? - HARRISON KEELY, Smoky Mtn. Sentinel

Have you ever wanted a phone that could double as a butter churner? Or, better yet, accurately predict the outcome of the 2008 presidential election? After all the average consumer has heard for months now, it seems as if Apple's new iPhone should be able to one-up even those tall orders. The new phone (it's hard to call it just that), is more than what media icons are calling the most hyped product in history. It's quite possibly the most revolutionary computer since Apple's Macintosh, introduced over two decades ago in 1984. Yes, I just called the iPhone a computer. But sincerely, because that's what it truly is.

Online games good for teens, says study - BCS

Teenagers who regularly play online multiplayer games could be benefiting from personal development that does not occur in the 'real' world, according to a new study. Researchers at Brunel University in London conducted a three-year experiment where they examined the impact of the popular online game Runescape on teenagers aged between 13 and 16. They found that the game allowed players to try out different identities and find out more about other cultures, races and classes than they would through everyday physical interaction with the people around them.

Pioneering e-learning tool launched to give undergraduates a head start in microeconomics

Today sees the launch of a new interactive e-learning tool to help undergraduates get a handle on microeconomics. LiveEcon Microeconomics Essentials aims to engage students in the subject by allowing them to manipulate economic variables and immediately see the effects in moving on-screen tables and charts. The unique new programme follows the success of its sister product, LiveEcon Macroeconomics, which is currently being used to help undergraduates at 35 universities in the UK and worldwide, grasp the principles of macroeconomics. Dr Jochen Runde, Reader in Economics at Judge Business School and co-author of LiveEcon Microeconomics Essentials, believes that while economics will always be a challenging subject, bringing it to life through LiveEcon will help students understand the concepts and how they apply to the real world. "For example, in the U-Drive-It! section, users can manipulate price, or impose a demand shock and immediately see on-screen how it affects the firms in the industry," says Dr Runde. "This is unique and LiveEcon's main advantage because by making the subject visual and interactive like this, we can engage students in a way that isn't possible with conventional textbooks." Students are also guided through dynamic moving tutorials covering all the main issues of economic theory, before testing their understanding through interactive question-and-answer sessions
