71  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / New copy features in Windows 8 on: August 25, 2011, 10:37:35 AM
New copy features in Windows 8

Copying, moving, renaming, and deleting are far and away the most heavily used features within Windows Explorer, representing 50% of total command usage (based on Windows 7 telemetry data). For Windows 8, we want to make sure that using these core file management commands, which we collectively refer to as “copy jobs,” is a great experience.  We know from telemetry data (which is based on hundreds of millions of individuals opting in to provide anonymous data about product usage), that although 50% of these jobs take less than 10 seconds to complete, many people are also doing much larger jobs, 20% of which take more than 2 minutes to complete. Prior versions of Windows Explorer can handle these kinds of jobs, but Explorer isn’t optimized for high-volume jobs or for executing multiple copy jobs concurrently.  Usability studies confirm what most of us know—there are some pretty cluttered and confusing parts of the Windows 7 copy experience. This is particularly true when people need to deal with files and folders that have the same file names, in what we call file name collisions. Lastly, our telemetry shows that 5.61% of copy jobs fail to complete for a variety of different reasons ranging from network interruptions to people just canceling the operation.  …  In Windows 8, we have three main goals for our improvements to the copy experience:     One place to manage all copy jobs: Create one unified experience for managing and monitoring ongoing copy operations.     Clear and concise: Remove distractions and give people the key information they need.     User in control: Put people in control of their copy operations.   Based on these goals, we made four major improvements to the copy experience. Here is a short video demo of these improvements: High quality MP4 | Low quality MP4  First, we’ve consolidated the copy experience. You can now review and control all the Explorer copy jobs currently executing in one combined UI. Windows 8 presents all pending copy jobs in this single dialog, saving you from having to navigate through multiple floating dialogs looking for the one you need.    Next, we’ve added the ability to pause, resume, and stop each copy operation currently underway. This gives you control over which copy jobs will complete first. You can also click any of the source or destination folders while the copy operation is taking place and open up those folders.    To support this new ability to prioritize and decide, we’ve added a detailed view with a real-time throughput graph. Now each copy job shows the speed of data transfer, the transfer rate trend, and how much data in left to transfer. While this is not designed for benchmarking, in many cases it can provide a quick and easy way to assess what is going on for a particular job.  Here you can see three copy jobs underway:    Conflict Resolution   Our new design is much more clear, concise, and efficient, providing a much more visible and actionable approach to conflict resolution. All the files from the source are on the left. All the files in the target location with file name collisions are on the right. The screen layout is easy to understand and shows you the critical information for all the collisions, front and center in one dialog.        The new Windows 8 Conflict Resolution dialog  Full story: Improving our file management basics: copy, move, rename, and delete

74  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Now available: Zune 4.8 on: August 24, 2011, 10:54:16 AM
Now available: Zune 4.8

Today we’re releasing the next version of the Zune software. As one of the
Zune program managers, I wanted to provide a brief look at what’s new in the 4.8
release, which you can download here. To update your current version,
click Settings > Software > General, and then click Check For Updates.
If you already have a Windows Phone, you probably know that the Zune software
is a key companion for your device. It allows you to update your phone software,
sync photos and videos, shop for apps, and more.
You probably won’t notice too many differences in how Zune 4.8 looks: Most of
the changes were designed to pave the way for the next release of Windows Phone,
codenamed Mango. Our primary goal with this release was to make the Zune
software the best companion for your Mango phone, so the team implemented a few
new features and made a bunch of under-the-hood refinements and fixes, including
several based on your feedback. Download At Source

Update on the issue of ‘supercookies’ used on MSN

In response to recent attention on "supercookies" in the media, we wanted to share more detail on the immediate action we took to address this issue, as well as affirm our commitment to the privacy of our customers. According to researchers, including Jonathan Mayer at Stanford University, "supercookies" are capable of re-creating users' cookies or other identifiers after people deleted regular cookies. Mr. Mayer identified Microsoft as one among others that had this code, and when he brought his findings to our attention we promptly investigated. We determined that the cookie behavior he observed was occurring under certain circumstances as a result of older code that was used only on our own sites, and was already scheduled to be discontinued.  We accelerated this process and quickly disabled this code. At no time did this functionality cause Microsoft cookie identifiers or data associated with those identifiers to be shared outside of Microsoft. We are committed to providing choice when it comes to the collection and use of customer information, and we have no plans to develop or deploy any such "supercookie" mechanisms.Microsoft has strong privacy standards that govern the development and deployment of our products and services. We work hard to build privacy into products, and we also engage with government, industry, academia and public interest groups to develop more effective privacy and data protection measures.Full Story At Source

Skype acquires Microsoft BizSpark partner GroupMe

Skype — a company which is in the midst of being acquired by Microsoft — announced on August 21 that it is acquiring GroupMe.GroupMe offers a messaging and conference call service, which it launched about a year ago. GroupMe officials referred to the service as “your real-life network,” and offers users a private chat room on their phones. GroupMe enables users to chat within their groups while circumventing SMS (and thus, not deducting from users’ SMS balances).GroupMe allows users to have multiple “disposable” groups, and works on a variety of phones, including iPhones, Blackberries, Android phones and feature phones. When I talked with company backers a couple of months ago, they were porting their application to Windows Phones, and had big plans for the “Mango” Windows Phone release (allowing users to pin groups to their start menus and obtain real-time notifications).Skype and GroupMe are not disclosing terms of the deal, but estimates have the deal valued at more than $50 million.Full Story At Source

Building Windows 8 - Building robust USB 3.0 support

One of the important roles Windows plays as part of a broad ecosystem is developing support for new hardware. This is a pretty involved process and so for this post we wanted to take a look at supporting USB 3.0, something we know everyone is anxious to be using because of the improvements it brings. This is also our first video post – we aimed for "engineering" videos and not high production values but I think we make our point (note videos are embedded in HTML5 and available for download). If you're like me when looking at the video, you might think that those file copy progress indicators are looking a bit dated…stay tuned. This post was authored by Dennis Flanagan, the Director of Program Management for the Devices and Networking group. –StevenWith throughput up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 and improved power management that results in longer battery life, USB 3.0 introduces compelling reasons to improve the world’s most popular PC interface. By 2015, all new PCs are expected to offer USB 3.0 ports, and over 2 billion new "SuperSpeed" USB devices will be sold in that year alone.Demonstration videoPerhaps the most important aspect of USB 3.0 is the expectation that customers have of USB: it’s just USB3 so it should just work, right? Each and every USB device, low, full, high, and SuperSpeed, has to work in Windows 8. That's our focus while also delivering the most robust and reliable USB stack.Let's take a look at USB 3.0 in action as it takes on some pretty significant copy tasks and races against USB 2.0.If you don't see a video here or can't play it, download it here: High quality MP4 | Low quality MP4Full Story At Source

79  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Re-enabling creation of Linked IDs on: August 19, 2011, 11:49:19 AM
Re-enabling creation of Linked IDs

Today we are beginning to re-enable the ability to create new Linked IDs.
This change is rolling out in the next couple days and should be complete this
week.
For some customers – particularly power users – you’ve told us that it’s
essential to be able to juggle multiple accounts. Over the last year we’ve added
several powerful new ways to do this – specifically aliases and email aggregation (“POP
aggregation), on top of existing features like “plus addresses”. Each of these is a
great solution designed to help a different scenario:

Aliases and plus addresses are a great way to create unique email addresses
– great to manage a particular event (shopping for a car or planning wedding for
example) or to manage mail from marketing sites.
Email aggregation is a great way to take multiple accounts from different
email providers and consolidate them all in your Hotmail inbox.
As we have made these changes, we looked at how most people use Linked IDs
and found that, for the most part, they were used to solve exactly these
problems – managing multiple email addresses and accounts. In our major update
last month, one of the things we did is turn off the ability to create new
Linked IDs, instead encouraging use of our new features.  However it became
clear from listening to your feedback that there were many people who used
Linked IDs for other reasons, and so we are making a change today to re-enable
the creation of Linked IDs. Full Story At Source

Introducing the “We’re In” app from Bing

Today we're happy to announce the release of the "We're
In" app for Windows Phone.
We’re In makes organizing get- together’s, carpooling and trying to find
people in a crowd a breeze. Any time you want to see where your friends
are—We're In can help you. It's simple, invite your friends, and when they join,
they'll see your location and you'll see theirs. When the invite expires, so
does the shared location – no complicated process to worry about.
We’re In is a great way to save time and frustration when planning your
roadtrip or meeting your friend at the mall – helping you connect with your
friend faster. Let’s take a closer look at the new We’re In product features and
how they work.
We’ve made We’re In super simple to use – all you need is your phone number
to sign up. Simply invite your friends (via your contacts) to start sharing
location info with each other including who, why, and how long:

Pick your friends from the contact list or enter their phone number, tell
them what the plan is. At this point you can choose how long you want to share
location info.
Your friends receive a text message with these details. They can use the app
to join you or, for friends that don't have a Windows Phone, they can join from
the mobile website via the invite.Continue At Source

81  THE TECHNO CLUB [ TECHNOWORLDINC.COM ] / Techno News / Windows Intune 2.0 beta Now Available on: July 14, 2011, 10:58:22 AM
Windows Intune 2.0 beta Now Available

You can go to Windows Intune Springboard site for information on signing up for your beta subscription. Once you have completed the sign-up process and activated your account, you can go to https://beta.manage.microsoft.com to begin evaluating the beta. A beta subscription will allow you to deploy to up to 10 PCs, which should allow you to evaluate the improvements we’ve made.  Here are the highlights of what’s new:  Software Distribution     Package applications, upload them to the cloud for distribution, and deploy them to your Windows Intune-managed PCs. For the beta we have provided 2 gigs of storage for this purpose. Packages can be normal applications in the form of MSIs or EXEs or third party updates. Deploying packages leverages BITS to ensure data transfer is efficient.   Better Hardware Reporting and Filters     We do a great job of collecting hardware data, but we want to ensure we also present this information in a way that is most useful to you. To assist with this, we have introduced the hardware dashboard along with reports, which will help you view and export your hardware more easily.   Third Party License Management     Upload and track your 3rd party and Microsoft retail or OEM license agreements - in addition to Microsoft Volume License Agreements – all in one place.   User Interface Enhancements     Many new enhancements have been made to the user experience. In general, we made numerous changes to improve navigability. We are also introducing the ability to right-click, which will display a list of context-sensitive actions you can perform. We have also added a new administrator role, so you can now have ‘read-only’ administrators.   Remote Actions     Execute a number of tasks on remote unattended PCs. You can invoke malware definitions to install, you can initiate a malware scan to run immediately, and you can remotely reboot a PC.   Improvements to Alerts Workspace     We’ve introduced the ability to configure thresholds on alerts so you can filter out less important events, and focus on the ones that matter to you. We also improved the way you set up recipients for these alerts.   Support for images     The Windows Intune client is ‘image-friendly’ and can be set up prior to image deployment. Previously, the Windows Intune client required an internet connection before it could install.  Windows Intune beta Now Available - The Windows Intune Team Blog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs

New DMVs and XEvents on select performance counters are introduced to monitor OS configurations and resource conditions related to the SQL Server instance.        ForceSeek for improved querying performance :       Syntax for FORCESEEK index hint has been modified to take optional parameters allowing it to control the access method on the index even further. Using old style syntax for FORCESEEK remains unmodified and works as before. In addition to that, a new query hint, FORCESCAN has been added. It complements the FORCESEEK hint allowing specifying ‘scan’ as the access method to the index. No changes to applications are necessary if you do not plan to use this new functionality.       Data-tier Application Component Framework (DAC Fx) for improved database upgrades:       The new Data-tier Application (DAC) Framework v1.1 and DAC upgrade wizard enable the new in-place upgrade service for database schema management. The new in-place upgrade service will upgrade the schema for an existing database in SQL Azure and the versions of SQL Server supported by DAC. A DAC is an entity that contains all of the database objects and instance objects used by an application. A DAC provides a single unit for authoring, deploying, and managing the data-tier objects. For more information, see Designing and Implementing Data-tier Applications.        Disk space control for PowerPivot:       This update introduces two new configuration settings that let you determine how long cached data stays in the system. In the new Disk Cache section on the PowerPivot configuration page, you can specify how long an inactive database remains in memory before it is unloaded. You can also limit how long a cached file is kept on disk before it is deleted.        Fixed various issues:       This update fixes many knowledge base issues that are listed in this Master KB article .      For a detailed list of new features and improvements that are included in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, review the What's New Section in Release Notes.
