FASHION DESIGNERS

FASHION DESIGNERS create designs for almost anything which is a part of the garment of men, women and children. Designers create garments and accessories making them functional as well as attractive, the main consideration being the need of the client, which obviously are influenced by trends, market prediction and the climate. The designer needs to keep the close track with fit, style, colour, texture, size and material. Fashion designers design outer and inner garments and accessories to go with it.

DESIGN DEPARTMENT: The design department in a manufacturing unit have Designers, Cutting Assistants, Sketching Assistants, Junior Designers.

MARKETING AND MERCHANDISING: The trends in fashion are always changing. The merchandising and marketing people in this industry have a thorough knowledge of trends, market demand and company’s vision and objectives.

MANUFACTURING DEPARTMENT: The manufacturing department is headed by Production Manager. He schedules the work plans, training and retraining of workers, maintain the quality standards.

FASHION COORDINATORS: The job of Fashion Coordinators is to coordinate with the buyer and production manager. They also plan the specifications for fabrics, colours, designs and keep an eye on the quality.

FASHION MERCHANDISERS

FASHION MERCHANDISERS understand buying trends and the needs of buyers. They purchase the materials required for production, price the finished garments and liaise between the production line and the marketing. This job demands the understanding of market demand and production process. Merchandising can be divided into the following stages:

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: Merchandisers along with Fashion Designers develop a product which is market specific. Merchandisers require specifications / measurements from buyers to translate the sample requirements to fashion designers first and then to the production team.

SAMPLING STAGE: Merchandisers give buyers samples for their opinion and advise. On approval, costs are negotiated. Modifications to the sample may be suggested.

PRODUCTION STAGE: Raw materials are procured by the merchandising department, quality check is carried out for proper materials supply and finally the production process is monitored.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING: Visual Merchandisers are engaged as managers for shop floor / window decorations. Window display hasbecome an impressive marketing strategy.

FASHION JOUNALISTS

FASHION JOUNALISTS with training in news gathering and reporting lay emphasis on mechanics of expression, editing, sources of information, objectives and layout. They attend ramp shows to cover designer’s collections. They report about live shows, produce video films, take fashion photographs, hence they are seen in such shows which have a high glamour setting. They cover outdoor shoots too hence the work environment varies and may include working indoors and outdoors. Fashion Journalists may work for news papers, magazines or can be freelancers. They can also work in fashion houses of repute.

FASHION MODELLING

FASHION MODELLING is of three kinds: Live modeling for ramp shows, Photographic or still modeling and modeling for electronic media. Designers who build up prototype garments on the model are ramp modeled in fashion shows. Models work in studios or on locations for still photographs or for the television. Photographic sessions are long, strenuous and demanding. Models pose for long eriods and have to be cooperative and patient while photographers adjust the light, set etc.

ACCESSORY / JEWELERY DESIGNERS

ACCESSORY DESIGNERS work very much like fashion designers, they research on designs before creating a new one. They design accessories are get the crafted in small and medium scale industries and then these accessories are sold in Showrooms or trade fares or craft melas.

JEWELLARY DESIGNERS create new design for gold, silver and precious metal jewellery. The work involves everything from casting and moulding to identifying and experimenting on the different gemstones and jewellery.

GEMOLOGISTS are experts in assessing the quality, value and setting of gems in various metals. They are experts in grading, sorting and setting of gems in various metals.
