Title: Writing for Christian Markets
Post by: Daniel Franklin on October 29, 2007, 03:55:59 PM
There are many reasons to write for Christian publications. Possibly the best reason of all is that you will have the opportunity to touch the lives of people who read your material.

Maybe your reason for writing is not only to inspire your readers. If you are a writer who makes a living from freelance writing, then you will also want to be paid for writing Christian material. That means you must identify paying Christian publications and I have some good news for you. There are many excellent Christian writing markets.

Although some writers have the impression that Christian publications don't pay well, that's not necessarily true. Whatever writing niche you are targeting, even topics such as business, sport, and women's interest, you will be able to find some markets that pay high rates, others that pay low rates, and some that don't pay at all. And Christian publications are no exception.

The key is to find those Christian markets that pay their writers. Here are a few publications to get you started. Although this information - based on guidelines at their own web sites - is believed to be correct at the time of writing, you are encouraged to visit the publication's web sites at the time you read this article to check out their latest guidelines and rates.

Ignite Your Faith magazine was formerly known as Campus Life. The content includes solid dating advice, help for living out your faith, articles about television shows and movies, personal stories from other students, and recommendations for cool Christian music. They also publish humor, fiction, and information for teens considering a Christian college. Fees for freelance writers range from $0.15 to $0.20 per word.

Canada Lutheran magazine serves the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Fees for freelance writers average around $0.10 per published word for unsolicited manuscripts.

Catechist magazine seeks articles that are of interest to teachers of preschool children through high school, youth ministers, specialists in adult religious education, parish religious education directors and principals. This is a paying market.

Australian Catholics is a magazine aimed primarily at young people and the families of primary and secondary students. They publish stories that describe the faith and life of Australians. They are also interested in stories about social justice, and about initiatives that foster an awareness of social justice in schools and communities. Fees are by negotiation.

Eclectic Homeschool is also a paying market. This publication promotes creative homeschooling through unique resources, teaching methods and online helps. They are looking for articles that deal with or touch on homeschooling or Christian living. Although this is a Christian publication, it is not limited to Christian material.

So if you are a Christian writer, or if you want to be one, here is your chance to write good Christian material and to be paid for your work. The few markets above are just a start.
