Title: Writing For Web Users
Post by: Daniel Franklin on October 29, 2007, 03:22:35 PM
So you've finally decided to make your company website, put up a blog, or make a hobby website. Now you need to put your thoughts into words. Before you begin you must keep in mind that writing for the web is unlike writing for any other medium.

If you consider the following items, you'll have great copy that will produce results:

Get to the point. Web readers are proactive. They are looking for certain information and they know that they have several options for finding it. This means that web readers tend to skim over sites as opposed to reading them in their entirety.

Use formatting instead of long chunks of text. Don't be afraid to use lists, block quotes, and bold font. Avoid underlines if possible because some people confuse underlined text with links.

Make use of headlines. This goes along with formatting. Use interesting headlines that entice the reader to continue. For example, instead using a statement as a headline, try using a question.

Use simple sentences. Only put one idea per sentence. This holds the attention of your reader for a longer time period.

The conversational writing style works well online. Forget your high school teacher's rule of "Never use 'you' when writing". Web users don't mind feeling as if you are talking to them.

If you include links, make sure to accurately explain where the link goes. There is nothing more frustrating than being mislead. Don't try to trick your readers into clicking a link. You will only upset them and then your creditability is gone.

Don't forget to attribute when possible. When you say where you got your information from it makes you more creditable.
