But unlike the 50,000 students from her native United States who are currently enrolled in Chinese courses in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country, she has decided to tackle Chinese single-handedly through self-study. “There is something extremely rewarding about overcoming an obstacle like that and learning on my own instead of at a school. Plus, it allows me to be flexible with my time and focus on what I want to learn.” And Mic contends that, with modern technology, she receives strong support. “I spend a lot of time online when I study.
