Virginia Tech reportedly considered implementing a text message notification system earlier this year, however, no such system was in place on the morning of April 16 when Seung-Hui Cho went on his shooting rampage, killing more than 30 Virigina Tech students and teachers. Could such a system help save lives when a gunman shows up on campus? In the wake of this week's shootings at Virginia Tech, many difficult and painful questions will be asked about what might have been done to prevent the horrible tragedy. Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine has announced the formation of an independent review panel to evaluate the response to the shootings, and colleges and universities around the country have made it clear that they will be taking a close look at their own safety procedures.
