Some students recently discussed the role of race in "The Secret Life of Bees," a book about a white girl who stays with three black bee-keeping sisters. "I admire the fact that Lily doesn't let the color of her skin deter her from her journey to unravel her mother's past," Amy Godby remarked. But the discussion didn't happen in the 10th-graders' honors English classroom at Smithfield High School. It happened in their homes - in front of computers. In keeping pace with an increasingly electronic society, some classes have gone online at Smithfield High School, thanks to an Internet program called Turnitin.
