An Elaboration on the Basics of Free Website Promotion - Part 2
« Posted: July 29, 2007, 12:17:39 PM »

If you have already read Part 1 of this mini series of articles, then welcome back. If not, in the part 1, we discussed three important free website promotion techniques. They included: submitting your articles to Directories, joining forums within your niche area of interest and writing and sending out Press Releases. In part 2 of An Elaboration of the Basics of Free Website Promotion, I will touch briefly on Article Marketing and Banner Advertising.

In today's highly competitive internet world, the significance of attracting highly targeted traffic to your website cannot be overemphasized. Driving web traffic to your site can be your only means of survival, especially in the cutthroat world of emarketin. Obtaining a high search engine ranking is a never ending merciless challenge. Fortunately, there is a profusion of website promotion strategies you can use to drive traffic to your website.

There are an array of techniques that you can take advantage of, from paid advertising programs such as Pay Per Click and Pay Per Action to affiliate marketing. The downside is that most of these neccessitate a large cash outlay, something many of us simply cannot absorb on our current budget. On the bright side; however, there are numerous ways that you can promote your website with little to no cash outlay. Free website promotion is a familiar term to us all or to most who have been trying to drive traffic to your website. One of the most effective and growing free website promotion methods is article writing. Commonly referred to as Article Marketing and Bum Marketing, Article Marketing is a means of driving free traffic to your website in a relatively short period of time.

4. Writing Articles

Commonly referred to as Article Marketing and Bum Marketing, writing articles is a means of driving free traffic to your website in a relatively short period of time. Article marketing is a free website promotion technique through which the author writes short articles (typically between 300 and 1,000 words)relative to ones niche industry and then distributes and makes the article freely available for publication to anyone that wants to use it. In order for a website to progressively rank higher in the search engines, it is imperative that webmasters add new, interesting and relative content to their website very frequently, otherwise, the website will grow stagnate and the search engines will slowly loose interest in what once was a highly ranked site. Article Marketing has filled this 'need for content' in a very effective way. How does this help you, the writer?

There are several reasons why you should heavily use Article Marketing as a part of your Internet marketing mix. I will list just a few here:

1. First of all, it is totally free. There are paid submission services out there but it is not necessary that you use them as there are just too many free services to use that you can access readily.
2. You will get free exposure and free advertising.
3. Properly written articles will optimize your site for better search engine ranking.

Article Marketing will not make you rich over night; however, the more good articles you write and publish to the Internet, the more free traffic you will drive to your site. The financial rewards will grow rapidly if you are diligent in your article writing duties.

5. Banner Advertising

A banner is an advertisement placed on a Web site either above, below or on the sides of the Web site's main content and is linked to the advertiser's own Web site. Banners are graphic images used on websites to advertise a product or service. Banner ads are displayed in many different sizes, but common sizes used are 460 pixels wide by 60 pixels high. Other common sizes include 460 by 55 and 392 by 72. In the early days of the Internet, banners were ads with text and graphic images. The first clickable banner ad was sold by Global Network Navigator (GNN-One of the very first commercially supported web publications and one of the very first web sites ever developed) in 1993 to a law firm. The first web site to sell banner ads in large quantities was hotwired.com. They sold their first banner ad to AT&T on October 25, 1994. There is a dispute over what company actually paid for the first banner: also credited as the first was a banner ad sold to Coors also in October 1994. In those early days, banner ads could contain graphic images and text but with today's technology such as Flash, banners are now complex and can be ads with text, animated graphics an sound.

Banner ads were measured by the number of impressions they generated (how many times the banner was displayed). Ken McCarthy, a well known Internet Trainer, was the first back in May or 1994 to introduce the concept of a clickable/trackable ad. Ken felt that be able to measure the return on investments was the only way banner ads would prove sustainable over the long run.

Banner ads are dispersed throughout the web by paid services and also free Banner Exchanges. In essence, there are two ways that you can benefit from placing free banner ads;

1. You can create a banner for your own products or you Affiliate products and display them on your website.
2. You can join a number of the free banner exchanges found on the Internet. Just conduct a keyword search for free banner ads or banner exchanges and you will find as many as you wish to deal with.

A Banner Exchange is comprised of a network of participating websites that display banners in exchange for credits that can be converted to ads that are displayed on other sites. There is a predetermined exchange rate. These credits allow you to display your banner ads on other websites. Members of large banner exchanges have the potential for their ads to be shown on thousands of other web sites. Typically, you could expect an exchange rate of 2:1 or 3:1 which means that for each time you show 2 or 3 ads on your site, the exchange will show your ad once.
